Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew which freeview services will be disrupted at stage one of the switch over?

i.e If I don't bother to reutne on the 4th, what would I miss.

Regards

Aerial point: As far as April 4th is concerned its only the BBC Mux that will be changing from Ch25 to Ch23 whereby you will lose it unless you re-tune, the remaining Muxes changing their operating channels on April 18th.

Crystal Palace Transmitter, I get my signal via Downley (High Wycombe. At about 3.30am I went to check Ceefac on BBC1, the screen was completely black. I was receiving BBC2, ITV1 & CH4. I cannot get CH5 at all.I can`t check with my neighbours as they use Sky & it`s now about 5am. I retuned my TV but can now only get BBC2 & have no lost ITV1 & CH4. I wish I hadn`t bothered. I live in a small area of High Wycombe that can only get 4 terrestrial channels normally. (Since about 3.30am I`ve only had 1).

6.05am 7/2/12 As it is past 6am when the engineering work stops I re-tuned my TV & all channels 1 - 6 are in service again. Thank you for your help & information. I tried the BBC but they didn`t have a clue about engineering work being in progress & suggested that it could be high pressure or my equipment. Luckily I found your website after the BBC had let me down.

Thanks for the replies jb38 and Briantist. I'm getting asked a lot of questions re the switchover at work.

Can I ask one more?

I'v heard that some devices at switchover will prompt for a re-tune?

i.e Click OK to reset your TV and perform a full system reset.

If this is true, do you know where I could find a list of devices that will do this?

Regards

My freeview stopped working on Sunday. The picture on all of the freeview channels is very bright.

The picture is fine with the analogue channels and with movies played through a PC.

What could be causing this?

Aerial Point: I don't think such a list exists. The changes to allow boxes to auto retune at switchover was added to the specification for Freeview (the so-called D-Book) quite some years ago.

Adrian: It is most likely the SCART cable that connects your Freeview box to the set. Remove it from both devices and then reconnect it firmly.

Aerial Point: Just to confirm / back up Briantist's reply to your query insomuch that this is quite correct there isn't any list, and with so many variations in the menu facilities offered between the various brands (and sometimes across different models within) from basic primitive to quite sophisticated its not practical to make a note of them.

Hello,

Recently moved into a new flat, and it picks up every single SD channel fine, however, it struggles with the HD channels.

When I first tuned it in the day time, it picked them all up, and the signal/quality were both strong. However, as soon as it got dark, it lost all signal/quality.

I have since retuned all channels, and it won't pick up any HD channels at all. Doing a signal check on channel 31 in the Manual install option gives 0% Signal and 0% quality, however every other frequency channel is around 70% signal, 100% quality.

Any ideas? Using a Humax HDR-FOX T2.

Alex: Although the Crystal Palace signal on C31 is predicted to offer reasonable odds on giving good reception on the HD services, the signal is at risk of interference from both Sandy Heath and Reigate at your location. When retuning at a time of receiving a poor quality signal (or no signal) the details of the HD channels would have been removed from the receiver's memory. Wait until 18th April 2012 for the high power HD service to start at Crystal Palace, otherwise, until that date keep looking at doing a manual tune on C31 to see if the low power signal has returned.
Mike Dimmick
Thursday 9 February 2012 2:22PM
Alex: The HD channels are on lower power than the other multiplexes at present, and the multiplex also uses the same channel as one of the SD multiplexes from Reigate, at the moment.

This will change on 18 April: the HD services will move, taking over Channel 4 analogue's frequency, and be boosted to the same high power as the other multiplexes' new power levels - 20x the current power level.

Night-time does tend to cause interfering signals to travel further, something called 'tropospheric enhancement'.
David
Friday 10 February 2012 12:29AM
Alex. The HD channel is also at a higher bit rate, which means that it needs a better signal to noise ratio. This means that it is at a disadvantage of more than the factor of 2 implied by the relative transmit power, when compared with ITV multiplexes and even more when compared with BBC ones. It will still be at a disadvantage when it goes to full power in April.

David, Alex: That is not true. The DVB-T2 standard is just that much more efficient than DVB-T (reflecting nearly 15 years more development). The mode selected for the BBC B multiplex is only very slightly less robust than the post-switchover mode for the other multiplexes, which is about the same as for Mux 2 and Mux A now. The difference in radiation pattern between two channels is typically larger than the difference in the margin required between a DVB-T and DVB-T2 multiplex.

Now that the commercial multiplexes are going to use 64QAM 3/4 mode, not 64QAM 2/3 as BBC A and D3&4 will, the HD multiplex should definitely be more robust than them.

maureen: I find it quite amazing that he managed to buy a analogue only TV unless from some second hand source, is he absolutely positive that it is purely an analogue set and that DVB isn't seen mentioned on the remote control?

However, any of these low priced Freeview boxes seen in places like Argos etc should be perfectly suffice for his needs provided the TV he purchased does have a scart socket?
if not then any Freeview box purchased has to be of the type with an RF modulator so that the signal can be fed into the TV's aerial socket.

Of course needless to say he will require a suitable aerial, although advice on this only being possible by having knowledge of his post code, this to enable checking of the signal level expected at his location.

Adrian: You are indicated as being only 4 miles away from Crystal Palace and as such very prone to suffer from severe signal overloading problems, and indeed likely be unable to get any reception at all come April 18th when Crystal Palace goes over to high power operation, as the signal will grossly overload the tuner in your TV.

If you have a set top aerial lying around try a test using that to see what happens on your Freeview channels, if it helps the situation then you will require to use an attenuator in line with the aerial socket on your TV.

However maybe you could give an update regarding your aerial, that is where installed.

Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
