To keep you all informed - Derek Savage Technical Manager at ITV has just rung me to confirm that engineers will be scaling the Whitehawk Transmitter on Tuesday 2 Dec (weather dependent) to check for any damage to transmissions W of the tower. However although there are no obvious signs of damage he acknowledges that local interfence may be an issue prehaps from the switching on of a new emergency services transmitter in the area over 9/10 Nov - shall revert once have further news.

Since early November the digital signal has been weak on the ITV and channel 4 stations as well as those station associated with them. Our post code is BN24 2RP.

We have had excellent reception prior to this, the airial is new and was installed correctly. Whic is proven due to excellent reception up until early November 2008.

Why is this and what is happening to sort it out?

We live in the postcode area BN3 and over the last week we have been unable to access BBC 1 and 2, ITV and Channel 4 programs and their associated programs. Have checked on the multiplexes and we can't access any from mul 1 and 2. Any ideas?

Still having problems. Had a couple of days of reception and thought it was all sorted, then it started blocking up again - still only affecting MUX 2 and still annoying.

Not sure what they did to cause it to come back for 2 days, but at least I got to watch a few things I'd have otherwise missed. Getting to the point where I'll try anything to get it sorted. Even emailed those guys suggested above - when the signal came back I thought they'd fixed it.

Thanks Brian for that advice. Have spoken to our neighbours and they are also experiencing problems with their digital tv. Ours is a built in DTV on Samsung TV. Have managed to recover BBC 1 and 2 although it does sometimes disappear.
See the transmitter is being check on tues so will see what happens then.

OK - Derek Savage, Technical Manager at ITV rang me on my mobile yesterday eve at 7pm and asked if I was still getting a weak signal - I said I was - he confirmed that Arqiva HAVE now found a fault with the MUX2 aerial (although have moved transmission of MUX2 further up the mast to try to better signal) - Arqiva are investigating fault - he promissed me an update by end of week

I have read the recent issues with interest having only just discovered this site. If the problems ith mux2 are fixed, I would like to know why, since Tuesday, my TV is still not getting ITV & C4 channels. When I re-tune now the set isn't even acknowledging the existence of these channels - this after 5 years or so of reasonable if sometimes unreliable reception. Something has changed! I live in on Peacehaven/Telscombe Cliffs boarder and can see the Whitehawk transmitter when I stand on my roof next to the aerial.

I am so glad I have found I am not the only one with this problem. I live in Seaford and have had no signal on the ITV channels since Tuesday 2nd December. I had good reception with these channels up to this time, so I am sure it is not my equipment. I have just asked my neighbours and they too have the same problem. Something has definitely changed. Who can we contact to find out what’s happened?

I am glad that others are having the same problems I thought it was just me!
As above asks is there anybody we can contact to get this sorted out as something has definately been done to the ITV signal since Tuesday 2nd?
There is a technical engineer mentioned in previous posts, does he read this to be aware of problems or can we get in contact with him?

This is really a comment (unless someone can tell me that things will get back to where they were befor now ) For the past two weeks I have lost Mux 2- ITV1 & Ch4. Ireside in BN254BZ at the East end of Seaford. For the past 5 Months I have recieved excellent pictures , so something or someone has changed the situation!! I know that I should not get the service here, but it is very frustrating to have it, and then loose it. I have tried Reboot, Rescan etc but to no avail so far as ITV1&Ch4 are concerned.

Having looked at a couple of other transmitter message boards it seems that a few other transmitter have been reduced in power.Perhaps it is not a coincidence that the new Freesat is being heavily advertised.
They might lose customers altogether because Sky have a £75 deal going which is far cheaper than the new BBC service plus you get 4 Sky extras for aperiod.
I for one am going that way as Freeview is not a service you can rely on.
Briantist
Monday 8 December 2008 10:23AM
Steve Blake/Chris Morgan/Rob Ward/john lambert/P.L.Eardley: It may be worth adding Freesat to your setup to ensure that you can get all the multiplex 2 channels reliably, as this transmitter will not switchover until mid 2012, and you have no hope of Freeview HD until then. www.ukfree.tv link icon Freesat | ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002 for more.
john lambert
Monday 8 December 2008 1:42PM
I'm certain those mentioned above all don't want to switch too Freesat. All we want to know is why from the 2nd December even a normal Freeview signal apart from the HD bonus has been obviously reduced when previous to that date all was okay.
Briantist
Monday 8 December 2008 2:33PM
john lambert: I didn't say "swatch to Freesat", I said "add Freesat" so you get the best of both. All the Mux 2 channels are on Freesat.
You are not in a good area for Mux 2 reception from Whitehawk Hill, so you would cause yourself less potential stress having a practicable solution, rather then depend upon good weather...
Steve Blake
Monday 8 December 2008 4:18PM Peacehaven
Hi Briantist what does add freesat involve, do I need to buy Freesat boxes as well as the Freeview boxes that I have, I have four children who all want the missing chanels in their bedrooms, what would this cost me ?.
I don't want to go out and spend lots of money and then all of the chanels come back anyway, I've had no problems for the last four to five years recieving them

Steve
Briantist
Monday 8 December 2008 6:28PM
Steve Blake: You can install a single dish with a "quad-LNB" to drive up to four boxes (either SD for £50, or HD for £150). There has to be a cable from the dish to each box.

There are more channels (some for Children) on Freesat too and you can get BBC and ITV HD too.
Rob Ward
Monday 8 December 2008 8:33PM
Putting aside the talk of freesat, does anyone know why from 2nd Dec we can know longer get Mux 2 channels (after years of getting a good signal) and if the situation is going to change? I have emailed DEREK SAVAGE at viewerservices@itv.com, as suggested in an earlier post, but have not had a reply! Who else can we ask?
Briantist
Monday 8 December 2008 8:36PM
Rob Ward: It depends on the reason for the problem, it may be caused by atmospheric conditions, or interference from abroad (France isn't far away), or it could be a fault on the transmitter that was giving out too much signal in your direction.

I would give it a few days to hear back from Viewer Services.

Tuesday 9 December 2008 2:27PM
I live in Withdean, (BN1) and have found that our signal for itv, channel 4, ITV3 and many other channels has completely broken up on one tv (with a freeview box and boosted signal). Another tele we have, with just a freeview box simply isn't showing any of these channels either. Several years ago we had a problem, but things were fine until a week or 2 ago, when the signal deteriorated. Today it seems kaput! It's interesting to read the comments above.
Clare C
Tuesday 9 December 2008 2:39PM
Well, the signal has returned to our main tele and seems fine. However, the ITV channels are still being skipped on our other tele. Are these Mux 2 channels just that much weaker?
Briantist
Tuesday 9 December 2008 4:26PM
Clare C: Yes, the signals are weaker, but mainly it is the transmission mode. Please see www.ukfree.tv link icon Freeview modes | ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002

I received this email from ITV today. It may be of interest to those experiencing bad reception on itv channels since December 2nd.

Dear Mr Ward
Thank you for your enquiry.
Engineers are currently investigating reports of poor reception in the Brighton area. They have recently conducted some field tests and concluded that there is an antenna fault at the local Whitehawk Hill transmitter.
An engineering team will visit the site to make the necessary repairs as soon as possible.
We appreciate that you may be experiencing poor reception. However, please be assured that ITV is in constant touch with the engineering team about the situation and we hope that your signal will improve in the near future.
Once again, thank you for taking the trouble to contact us.

Indeed - received this email from Derek Savage yesterday eve!!

Thank you for your email.
Engineers are continuing to investigate reports of poor reception in the Brighton area. They are currently concentrating on the antenna system of the mast at Whitehawk Hill and will again visit the site tomorrow. If weather conditions allow, there will be a break in transmission of up to four hours from 11.30am for engineering work to take place.
I appreciate that you may be experiencing poor reception. However, please be assured that ITV is in constant touch with the engineering team and we hope that your signal will improve in the very near future.
I do not have any further details to share with you but I will be in touch when further information becomes available.
Once again, thank you for taking the trouble to contact ITV.
