Freeview on Sudbury requires aerial group/position E/WH, transmitter ERP 5033W, at 178m -
The yellow area has the strongest signal from this transmitter, green areas are served by stronger signals from other transmitters, white shows low signal areas. See Overlap Map Key for details.

You may not be able to receive all the Freeview channels

Some channels on the Sudbury transmitter have lower transmission power so you may receive only some of them.

Your cables, connectors and aerial may need upgrading to get all the Freeview channels.

If you are missing your electronic programme guide (EPG), your channel line-up is wrong or incomplete, you have no subtitles or the 'press red' services do not work, please try this reset procedure first.

Mux is an abbreviation of multiplex. The Effective power level takes into account the transmission mode - and does not indicate a fault condition.

Self-help relays

Self-help relays are transmitters that are not owned by the broadcasting and transmission companies, but by the local users. An active deflector (AD) re-transmits the analogue broadcasts on the same frequencies as the original broadcasts, while a transposer (T) transmits the received broadcasts on different frequencies.

NOTE: SDN will operate on channel 49 (at 14kW ERP) from the first stage of Sudbury’s switchover until mid-2012. Arqiva A will remain on its pre-switchover channel (54) from switchover until mid-2012. Arqiva B will remain on its pre-switchover channel (50) until late 2011, and then temporarily move to channel 63 (at 2.2kW ERP), before adopting its final allocation of channel 56 in mid-2012.

Colour bands denote aerial groups: Red:A Yellow:B Green:C/D Brown:E Grey:K Black:Wideband

Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 250,000 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 75,000 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for horizontal polarization - the elements going from left to right.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

Upgrade to Wideband aerial requried to watch all Freeview channels during dual running of analogue and digital television. After switchover, you will have needed to upgrade to a Wideband aerial to receive some or all digital television services.

First tried using digital signal from the Sudbury transmitter last summer, just to see what reception was like, all was fine. good signals. As winter set in started to lose signal every day around 16:00 and as winter progressed it got worse, losing nearly all signals all day. Now warmer weather has finally returned reception has returned to nearly all day only odd interruptions.Would a high gain digital cure this and give me guaranteed reception or do I need to wait till switch over. My geographical location is fairly high but I am located very near the coast and some web-sites do state that there is no signal for my location as of yet.
Any advise would be much appreciated. (map)

Ray: You will need a rooftop aerial, but as you are in the main service area for the Sudbury transmitter you should have no problems for Freeview reception if you have the right equipment.

In Sturmer, near Haverhill, and received most channels with no problems all winter and early spring (using existing roof aerial and digi-box) but have noticed increasing intermittence of channel availability - no change in analogue so presuming aerial is not the cause. Currently can't receive any digital channels! Any reason?

Alec Gunner: The most usual reason for this is that your aerial is pointing near some trees, and now they are in leaf.

If this is the case, you might just need to raise the aerial up higher using a longer pole.

Are there any issues/work going on at present on the Sudbury transmitter? I live in Ipswich and the signal has been poor on the lower strength channels -most indicating very low strength with high error rate. Very variable over the last few days (since about 18/19th). It's normally reasonable so seems to have taken a sudden dip. I've checked my equipment and all looks ok.
Thanks!

I live near Ipswich and ITV1, ITV2 Channel 4, E4, More4, FIVE, ITV2+1, Channel 4+1 have suddenly become impossible to watch.
I have retuned my box with no improvement. I checked another box in the house and that one is acting exactly the same, we have not retuned it.
My neighbour says hers is the same so am assuming it is something to do with the transmitter

Hi Katie
I am in Manningtree and have no problems with ITV1. Is this a weak signal you are referring to? If so, why should it only be apparent during World Cup broadcasts???

As I said, all but ch 45 are ok. Nothing has changed with my set up, and all through the last six months ch 45 has been ok. We have large trees directly in front of the aerial about 100 meters away, but if this is the problem why only ch 45 ? (map)

I believe Sky Sport 1&2 will appear on channels 41 & 41 as part of BT Vision shortly. Any idea what Mux these will be on as, living in Ipswich, I don't get all muxs (without spending a fortune). I do just get ESPN though.

Paul: they will be on Mux B before switchover and one of Arqiva's after switchover.

Yes, the BBC's Mux B. That's the deal since that's where the spare bandwidth currently is, the BBC having had to close many services that used to be on Mux B because they haven't got space on their post-DSO Mux BBCA. (Mux B becomes the HD mux after switchover.)

If you can get BBC Four and the BBC's radio services, it should work for you. (map)
