TONIGHT - Sandy Heath - ArqB moves from C67 to C48 at 20kW and ArqA moves from C40 to C67 (vacated by ArqB).

Retune required.

Is the final DSO power level for ArqB only 20kW?? Why is it so much lower than the final power levels for the other muxes (180kW and 170kW?
Briantist
Tuesday 13 September 2011 10:13PM
Will: Yes, that is correct. It is the "bottom of the pile" multiplex so it gets the poorest coverage. It was called "Multiplex D" before which made this clearer.
Mike Dimmick
Tuesday 13 September 2011 11:02PM
Will: No, the final power is 170 kW just like the other two COM multiplexes. It is *currently* running at 20 kW to avoid interference to other transmitters.

The page above says 20 kW because Brian did a bodge to his database, because of the numerous complaints.

20 kW is an inference, actually it has never been explicitly stated that ArqB is running at C67.

The current power level of Mux A and C (not COM5/ArqA as it remains in 16QAM 2/3 2K mode) should be shown as 20 kW.
Briantist
Tuesday 13 September 2011 11:16PM
Mike Dimmick: I didn't think I had changed ArqB that way, I thought I had done it via the "Switchover state 9" function which doesn't change the final levels in the database.

But it seems that is what I must have done. Just changing it now.

Sorry for any confusion.
Briantist
Tuesday 13 September 2011 11:21PM
Mike Dimmick: OK, it's 40 minutes early, but I have patched the "switchover type 9" to have the correct information and the final level for ArqB is now show above with the correct value.

Sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum. I know of a Humax Freeview DVR which from time to time, doesn't record at the programed time. Anyone with similar experience? It is receiving from Sandy Heath, no mux's or ch show any pixilations, signal strength and quality looks OK. Also tend to get Oxford off the back of the beam, being in MK13. Possibly the latest retune may help, but all this missed timed recording reared its ugly head mostly after the last retune at the end of August. Humax owner suffering despair at the thought of another retune and the loss of timed recording of Dr Who!!!

Ever since the 14th of September ive lost HALF my channels and my Freeview HD channels are losing signal every few minutes there unwatchable, despite the fact they were perfectly fine for the last 6 months or so we have had them. I kept getting a message on channel 4 wich said i would loose channels on 14th september and to retune, ive retuned all 6 digital recievers in my house numerous times (including factory resets) and lost half my channels its ridiculous!

Before we were only missing Film 4, 4 Music etc and pretty much had 90% of the channels, now were missing Dave,Dave + 1, E4 +1,Sky News and many many more,we now have like 40% - 50% of the channels.

My postcode is PE38 and im on Sandy Heath Transmitter.

MickO: Hello

Can anyone help. I live in Bridgend S Wales ( Wenvoe ) and would dearly like to watch C4HD. I can't get it on my DS DHR8203. However, my son gets it on his Sony HD TV in his bedroom using only a cheap coat hanger type aerial on his windowledge.

I use a High Gain aerial and boosters ( running 3 sets ) for my TV. I've tried moving the aerial ( attic ), but to no avail.

Many thanks.

J RUTTER: Are you sure the DS DHR8203 supports DVB-T2 reception?
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 14 September 2011 4:58PM
J RUTTER: From Welsh transmitters, you get S4C Clirlun rather than 4hd. You need to be able to get an aerial pointed at Mendip.

Ironically an indoor aerial probably will work better than a roof aerial aimed at a different transmitter, because it's usually wideband and has poor rejection of off-beam signals.

Try doing a manual scan on C58, but as I say the problem is likely to be that the aerial is rejecting this transmission.

Similar experience to Dave's posting earlier earlier. Lost a few channels like sky news and Dave which we watched quite often and we have gained Al Jazeera, 4 music, viva, sky ports 1 & 2 (scrambled). Why can't they get it right? When freeview started we got all channels and analogue. Now with every re-tune we have lost more channels and this time gained a few we'll never watch or cant wathch which are scrambled. Our postcode is NN14 2 and we have done a complete factory reset on all our tv's.

I've just retuned here in Leighton Buzzard and all of the ArgB channels seem to be listed from 800, to 825. This includes both Sky Sports 1 and 2 as well (which I watch on topuptv). I'm using an I-Can freeview box. Any ideas what may have happened to today to cause the channel numbers to all move?
Briantist
Wednesday 14 September 2011 8:46PM
Phil: You need to do a "first time install" or at least delete all the channel numbers before you scan. If you can't find a manual to tell you how to do it, do it this way - www.ukfree.tv link icon My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

MIke Dimmick/Brian, can you summarise then when the ArqA, ArqB and SDN muxes will go to full power? Bit confused now.
Briantist
Thursday 15 September 2011 9:02AM
chrism42:

14th September 2011 - ArqB moves from C67 to C48 at 20kW and ArqA moves from C40 to C67 (vacated by ArqB).

23rd November 2011 - ArqA move from C67 to C52, changes to 8k mode.

9th May 2012 - SDN to 8k moves from C31 to C51

Wednesday 27th June 2012 or thereafter - SDN/ArqA/ArqB - output levels go up to 170kW
chrism42
Thursday 15 September 2011 11:13AM
Brian - so even from 27th June 2012, full power is not a given? That's stretching the meaning of 'for a period' a bit ;-)
Mike Dimmick
Thursday 15 September 2011 11:56AM
chrism42: From Digital UK and Ofcom documents:

ArqB should already be on 170kW on C48. No further changes are shown for this multiplex.

ArqA goes to full power, 170kW, on C52 on 23 November.

SDN goes to full power, also 170kW, on C51 on 9 May 2012.

The restricted radiation pattern to the south - greater beam tilt, which means that the angle of greatest power is aimed closer to the transmitter than the final design - is removed on 27 June 2012. I believe this is more likely to be protecting Hastings low-power digital than Rowridge analogue, though it has an effect on both. The influence on Hastings means it has to wait until after Hastings DSO.

Lost Film4 and Yesterday & QVC channels at the 14 September changeover this week. Using the Sandy Heath transmitter. Am I correct that I will have to wait until the 23rd Novemeber to see any possible improvement?
Mike Dimmick
Thursday 15 September 2011 1:33PM
chrism42: Actually, looking at the map, I would think there is still some restriction on ArqB C48, as it appears to clash with the New Barnet and Chingford relays in north London. If PSB multiplex coverage has to be restricted to protect Rowridge and Hastings I'm sure those much closer relays need to be protected too!

Unfortunately we don't know what the restriction is.

Speculation: Hemel Hempstead was only allowed 400W on C48, the difference in distance to New Barnet should allow 126 kW before allowing for the fact that Sandy Heath uses horizontal polarization while Hemel Hempstead is vertical (the planners allow 16 dB, or 40x, for this difference). However, Hemel Hempstead had a fairly deep null at 120° (-18.5 dB), the direction of New Barnet; if Sandy Heath is omnidirectional that could have more of an effect. It looks like it is, the 'effective height' data submitted to the ITU planning conference in 2006 doesn't vary a lot and 170° to 180° is about middle of the range).

The note in the very latest 'Table of Digital Stations' simply says 'Until 27 June 2012, the transitional S1 antenna is used', which is the same as it says for the PSB multiplexes. Of course it may not *actually* be the same antenna, Sandy Heath was going to get one half for PSBs and one half for COMs.

Mike Dimmick, I'm in awe of your knowledge of things I know nothing of, like beam angles, fairly deep nulls and the whole concept of transmitters broadcasting asymmetrically. Given that I'm due East, more or less, of the transmitter, do you think the southerly restriction would apply here in Cambridge?
Mike Dimmick
Thursday 15 September 2011 7:27PM
chrism42: No, it probably doesn't apply in Cambridge, I think it just applies to the south face. The power might still be restricted too, though, not just the position.

Can anyone help. Since 14 Sept I have lost sky news and other channels which all seem to be on mux C. Prior to this at last re-tune date, I lost film 4 plus other channels, these have now returned. My postcode is cb24, sandy heath transmitter. I have checked cables, have a new wide band ariel and have disconnected any boosters etc.. but still only get 84 out of 103 channels. Changed the rf output on sky as suggested but still nothing. Disconnected sky box completely and sky news returned briefly but picture quality was vey poor. Any help would be appreciated.

Since the 14th September retune we've gained some channels but lost quite a few as well!!! No more Sky News, Pick TV or Dave, etc?? We're on the Sandy Heath transmitter and it seems we're not the only ones though, wonder what's going on? Tried rescanning, unplugging and everything else you're supposed to do but to no avail. Oh well!!
KMJ,Derby
Friday 16 September 2011 11:27PM
Derek and Louise: Mux ArqB (Film4 etc) was using C67 when you were unable to receive it. Mux ArqB has now changed frequency to C48, and MuxC (Sky News, Dave etc) is now using C67, which explains why you have gained Film4 but lost Sky News. The Digital UK postcode checker predicts good reception of C67 at both locations, so the current non-reception of MuxC is likely to be due to single frequency interference affecting C67, or the aerial does not perform very well at this frequency. It could also be that the aerial is positioned in a null for that frequency and moving it slightly to either side or raising/lowering it would give reception of the missing mux. The situation is due to change again on 23rd November 2011 when MuxC/ArqA changes frequency to C52, adopts 64QAM and 8k mode working and increases power.

I am in Cambridge, with loft aerial
Every time I re-tune I lose all on MIX 67
e.g. now its "Dave " etc
will this be permanent even after 23/11?
Is it due to the 842mhz or the aerial being indoor ?

Thanks

Friday 16 September 2011 11:43PM
Bob: After clearing the channel list try doing a manual tune on C67 and C48 and see if the channels are then found. It is possible that when doing an auto scan weak signals from Crystal Palace are found first and (unwatchable) channels stored. MuxC from Sandy Heath might then be overlooked as a duplicate, and Mux ArqB being in 8k mode would be seen as a new set of channels and placed in the 800s of the channel list due to the "normal" positions being already occupied.

yet again you have changed the set up of sandy heath, and noe transmittin mux a c and arqB on very low power.
it doesnt matter what my post code is, until you increase the output most of the channels will be mucked up.
so either you have the choice now increase power to bring things back to a reasonable service or change back to analogue. people will be mighty cheesed off paying a tv subscription for services they cant get.

Absolutely agree with this. Up unto a few weeks ago the channel set up would change every month or two. It was easy to "rescan" the TV to get the channels back. Now it's been every week and the latest "change" has obliterated a large proportion of the channels we can receive from Sandy Heath, when they have been fine until now. With experiences of the switch-over in another region as well, its surely tempting to give up with it completely and get a 'dish installed and swap over to Free sat.

gail: You are indicated as only being able to receive signals from Sandy(Anglia) and there is no reason for not receiving ITV1 (Mux Ch24) unless that is something has possibly happened to your aerial, that said though, difficulty could well be experienced on some of the other lower powered channels.

To give an idea of your signal strength carry out a signal check whilst on BBC1 (Mux Ch27) this facility accessed from the tuning menu.

Thank you for the advice but my TVs and set-top boxes cannot do manual set-ups. I find it extraordinary that with all the posts here, which must be the tip of the iceberg, that the heading to the Sandy Heath pages shows no reported problems. A clear case of the operators working to their entire satisfactioon and not ours.
Surely someone is going to do something. Broadcasters and advertisers aren't receiving value for money and, of course, neither are the viewers and consumers.
To announce an increase in power and simultaneously produce fewer channels is a ridiculous state of affairs. The managers should be ashamed of themselves.

After the latest retune event at Sandy Heath transmitter (just 10m from my home), I can no longer receive MUX A/C.

I have notifed key advertisers with UKTV that almost nobody in BEDS & CAMBS are able to receive these channels (notably DAVE & PickTV) in the hope that they will put pressure to increase power output of these channels.

As a result of these numerous retune events, I have given up entirely with FREEVIEW and bought a FREESAT box instead (highly recemmended solution).

I don't think I will ever both with trying to receive TV through the airwaves again now, as the whole experience has been a total nightmare. So feel free to retune as often as you like!

Whoever decided on the implementation & rollout should be sacked immediately. Total fiasco.

We were advised that the adjacent transmitter channel clash that caused the channel with the history channel to be transmitted at reduced power before the retune at Sandy Heath would be resolved with the retune. Since the retune channel 67 is now at reduced power. Please sort it, it is pathetic.

I'm in the Sandy Health transmitter, and I'm missing channels in C and COM6ArqB (D), I've searched for channels automatically, reset by doing first time installation, and searched for channels manually, when I searched manually for the channels in 67 and 48 'no new channels were found.' I've also unplugged everything and waiting 30 seconds and searched for channels again after that, but channels like Film4, VIVA, 4music and Dave etc... are still missing. I've gone to every page its told me but nothing is working?

Still a bit confused...
Which and when do Mux A, C and ArqB go to higher power? i.e. around 170-180kW or do they?
KMJ,Derby
Tuesday 20 September 2011 9:33PM
MickO: MuxC/ArqA has mode change (to 8k), power up and frequency change to C52 on 23rd November 2011. MuxA/SDN has mode change (to 8k), power up and frequency change to C51 on 9th May 2012. I am not sure what power MuxArqB is currently using, but the trade predicter does suggest that it is somewhat higher than the other two COM muxes.

I'm quite surprised that so many people in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire are suffering reception issues. I'm in Kettering, Northants and my two TVs receive all multiplexes perfectly and the bedroom TV is fed from a set-top aerial. The Eye TV on my Mac has a harder time because the aerial has to "see" through two walls for its signal, but it still picks up the PSB multiplexes absolutely fine.

Out of curiosity, as ArqB is now on its final channel, 48, and now in 8K mode, when will it increase to its final power?
Darren
Wednesday 21 September 2011 9:47AM
All is clear now, the £15 I have just spent on a booster to still fail to pick up Dave is because the transmitter doesn't have enough power. What a waste of time and money. A 100% botch end to end. Utter disgrace. If they weren't ready, they should have waited. Maybe better to start downloading the few things worth watching on line instead. No, can't do that, the copper cable has just been stolen at Oakley. 21st century?

Hi, can somebody please tell me when all of the channels transmitted from Sandy Heath will be in their final positions and when future retunes are. My postcode is CB6 1JU. Thanks

Louise: From above

"The commercial multiplexes at Sandy Heath will remain on their pre-switchover channels and powers for a period after digital switchover. SDN will then temporarily move to channel 31 (at 20kW ERP) on 31 Aug 2011, before adopting its final allocation of channel 51 on 18th April 2012. Arqiva A will adopt its final allocation of channel 52 on 23 Nov 2011. Arqiva B will temporarily move to channel 67 (at 20kW ERP) at switchover and then it will adopt its final allocation of channel 48 on 14 Sept 2011."

Since the beginning of Sept I have lost all BBC channels. Everything was fine before.

Signals on other channels - including signal strength and quality - are fine but I have nothing on 27 - and no amount of manual or automatic returning (on any of our 3 TV's) makes any difference.

I have tried everything suggested - short of completely replacing the aerial and boosters that worked fine before. I am struggling to understand why it has gone progressively from bad to worse

I am probably going to get freesat as I am fed up with this now - but any suggestions, explanation or reassurance would be welcome.
