I live in Godalming and have been using freeview since just after it started. Our aerial was picking up the Guildford relay transmitter from Crystal palace and we couldn't get all of the stations. I had the local aerial installer come round and he detected a better signal from the Midhurst Transmitter, so he set the new aerial with amplifier to Midhurst.
All stations have been ok until about a month ago when the channels in group C (Dave, pick tv etc) all had no or low signal. This week all the channels in group D (film4, itv4 etc) are on a very low signal, sometimes watchable, sometimes no signal. There are no faults shown for the transmitter and I have retuned the boxes without any improvements.
Are these signal changes linked to the coming switchover?

Steve: On having a study at your reception possibilities I cant help but feel that the fact of you having previously received the two multiplexes mentioned was more of a fluke connected to the reception conditions prevailing at the time due to atmospheric reasons, and which have now changed to your disadvantage hence your problem.

My reason for saying this is, that you are not predicted (on trade view) as being able to receive ArqB at all from Midhurst until April 12th, and with ArqA presently under the heading of poor, and although its not impossible that their powers have been backed off very slightly (everything isnt reported) its very doubtful that they have been, because its BBC2 that's subject to changes.

I cant really see anything that can be done to help the situation, as you have said that an amplifier is already being used and no other station is indicated as being possible to receive, and that includes Guildford (except for BBC) at only 4 miles away, which to me suggests you reside in a problem area for reception.

I live in Sheet just on the outskirts of Petersfield(GU31 5AB), and our current signal from Midhurst has deteriorated from poor to non existent due to the trees behind our house. My question is, will the boost on the signal strength in March help with this problem or not?
Many thanks
KMJ,Derby
Monday 20 February 2012 3:56PM
Simon Ash: The signal will be ten times stronger on the PSB muxes after switchover at Midhurst, so it is possible that you might notice an improvement in reception. However if the foliage is dense enough it could still block the signal, or give signal quality problems - what is analogue reception like currently? The Digital UK postcode checker suggests that a new transmitter due to enter service after switchover at Rowridge could offer good reception at your location. This transmitter does not offer the COM muxes until 18th April 2012, so best to try after that date if Midhurst is giving problems. Reception of Rowridge VP will require a group "A" aerial pointing SW with the rods set for vertical polarisation.

Wednesday 29 February 2012 9:47AM
Glad we have Freesat!

The changeover is deplorable with some scheduled stations being received and others not. Guess the support teams will have their work cut out getting Coronation Street for the pensioners!

Is it lack of signal power causing some channels to pixelate and will the signal power be increasing? We have signal boosters on the aerial and was hoping they would not be needed after changeover.

No HD on Freeview and so Freesat is our only option (no cable and no Sky).
Dave Lindsay
Wednesday 29 February 2012 9:52AM
Vic Sullivan: HD services will be broadcast from Midhurst from 14th March. On the same date all other channels will go to their full power, equivalent to that of analogue. At present, only BBC standard definition TV and radio are on their full post-switchover power.

It is possible that your signal boosters could be causing issues, so you would be advised to try removing them.

Mick: Nothing has happened to multiplex 2 at this stage of switchover. I suggest you try doing a "first time install" again.

Wednesday 29 February 2012 10:07AM
Vic Sullivan: The published schedule for changes, as it has been at about 900 other masts so far, has two stages, two weeks apart.

This is to allow people who "forgot" to buy a Freeview box a couple of weeks to get to Argos.
Briantist
Wednesday 29 February 2012 10:08AM
Ian Hargreaves: These have no changed get, but you might have to do a "first time install" on your box to get all the services on the correct channel numbers.

So switchover seems to have happened but I cannot get any of the channels listed under C or D

I really do not understand why these no longer work - tried to use the channels & frequencies quoted here but it doesnt pick up new channels.

Why oh why is this digital switchover so complicated? I thought the whole point is to make things easier...not harder! This has been an annoying & frustrating day. Still isnt it great to see my licence fee is put to such good use...
jb38

FrustratedinHorsham; The trade view reception predictor indicates that you should be able to receive all multiplexes but "only" from March 14th when switchover stage 2 takes place, this event requiring a re-tune.

The other point I noticed is that ArqB (Ch50) will be remaining on low power (1Kw) until October before it increases to 10Kw the same as the other commercial muxes, and although it is indicated as "good" for your area whether in reality it will or not is something that will have to be seen.

By the way the licence fee is not connected in any way to the purely commercial multiplexes such as SDN / ArqA / ArqB.

After re tuning the digital receivers this week to get BBC2 due to the start of the switchover from the Midhurst transitter, the signals on groups C and D have gone from 40 - 50% on quality right up to 100%. So once again I can watch all of the channels that I lost a couple of months ago.
