bryan wade: I don't know why Digital UK would have told you that as if you are able to receive Midhurst you will have the correct region anyway. It is true that currently Hannington does give all six muxes, albeit with variable reception on four of them, but after switchover it is predicted to give only the PSB muxes. After switchover Midhurst is not brilliant, prediction is for good reception on Mux BBCA and variable on the rest. Rowridge incidentally is predicted to give good reception on all muxes both now and after DSO, but that prediction could change if you insert your house number into the table for a more precise assessment - try for yourself by clicking on the link to Digital UK tradeview and altering the address.

bryan wade: I would first establish which transmitters broadcast which regional or sub-regional programming/news.

Give the BBC South main switchboard a ring: 023 8022 6201

According to Wikipedia, BBC South Today has one edition from Southampton:

en.wikipedia.org link icon South Today - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The only sub-regional variation it talks about is "BBC Oxford News" (formerly "BBC South Today Oxford").

I wonder if there are any opt-outs within the main programme. Then there is the same question of Meridian. E.g are there East and West variants?

One thing you might be able to do it receive the analogue BBC and ITV signals from Hannington to see if they vary from those of Midhurst. This is one way to test whilst South Today is on air. You will probably need two TVs on next to one another.

How good the picture is depends on your luck, what with the aerial pointing not in the right direction, albeit that it's only 50 degrees away. Hannington analogue BBC1 is on Ch39 and ITV is on Ch45.

We are in Cliddesden RG25 2JL, near Basingstoke. Pixellation and loss of sound has been getting steadily worse since late summer. Today, 5 Dec, almost all freeview channels are unreadable. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Dave Lindsay
Tuesday 6 December 2011 12:06PM
Peter: Is your aerial pointing at Hannington (305degrees) or Crystal Palace (72degrees)?

Do you get London programming or Meridian programming?

Perhaps your aerial is on one but your TV is tuned to the other.

John: There was no requirement to retune as the frequencies used for services from Hannington have not changed.

There were two possibilities:

1. If your unit was tuned correctly, then retuning won't help because issues with reception lie elsewhere. This will provide no benefit but there is the potential to make matters worse because your receiver could tune to the wrong transmitter.

2. If your unit was not tuned correctly, then retuning was necessary since the time it was last tuned (incorrectly). In this case, you were tuned to a signal from a direction (transmitter) to which your aerial does not face, thus picture reception issues are to be expected.

If your aerial points to Hannington, then do a full scan with the aerial unplugged. When it gets to 33% plug it in. This will mean that the aerial is unplugged whilst scanning the frequency used by Crystal Palace which carries London services, but plugged in for Hannington.

Once you have done this, you can verify that your receiver is tuned correctly by checking the UHF channels it is tuned to for the following services:

BBC One Ch50
BBC Four Ch46
ITV1 Ch43
ITV3 Ch40
Pick TV Ch44
Yesterday Ch41

This information is usually given on the signal strength/quality screen. It may be described as "Channel", "Ch", "UHF channel" or some variation thereof.

Once you have established that these channels are correct, then there is no need to retune until 8th February. If you have issues, then it is not the tuning that is at fault.

In the last couple of months we have bought a new LG TV with HD Freeview and Humax HD Freeview PVR ready for switchover. Everything was working fine until a few of days ago. First no ITV then ITV came back & no BBC channels. Occasionally we have no channels. At the moment we have had no BBC for 2 days. We live nearer to Rowridge transmitter but have to get out TV from Hannington. We are pensioners with no technical knowledge. All the above advice seems double dutch. If anything needs re-setting up, we will have to pay someone to do it for us. Who do we contact eg aerial company or what?

Dave Lindsay
Thursday 15 December 2011 10:46AM
June Matthews: It is only two months until Hannington's switchover which will see its signal boosted in strength. If the low signal strength is what is causing your issue, then any change of aerial will only be of help for the next couple of months (if your current aerial is sufficient post-switchover).

I have a powerful multi element loft aerial with a masthead amplifier pointed at Hannington which gives me BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 & Channel 4 analogue. Perfectly well except for a bit of herringbone interference on BBC2. I have several dozen watchable digital channels but BBC1 & BBC 2 are unwatchable at present due to pixelations and break up. This is the same for a second television with a less powerful unamplified external aerial. Can I expect an effective BBC 1 & 2 digital signal after switchover please?

J. R Hill: Going by the post code reception predictor (trade view) the only channels shown as being presently possible to receive is the BBC (Mux Ch50) and SDN /ITV3 etc (Mux Ch40), the latter being in the category of variable.

This changes on 22nd Feb next year when all PSB muxes increase power, with the commercial muxes doing likewise between 4/18th of April when all six multiples are then indicated as good.

I will say that Oxfords PSB muxes are shown as being presently possible to receive, these being on Mux Ch53 / Ch60 / Ch57 (HD) the station being located @ 41mls / 330 degrees, but whether or not you would actually pick it up is another matter altogether.
