Like many here, in the last few months, have lost many channels. Before we could receive all MUX with no problem.

First we lost all channels, after a couple of retunes, managed to get MUX1 channels no problem, but all others are patchy.

Some nights it is possible to watch other channels, but others the signal is too weak.

What has happened? Has someone pulled out a plug at the antenna?

Seriously considering moving over to Sky now.

In the last two days have had to retune our Tv twice. On both occasions we have lost many digital chanels. I'm all for change but this is becoming a joke !

The one thing I havn't mentioned is that we live in the RG14 area, about 7 miles from the Hannington mast.

When will this be sorted ?, or is digital a waste of time !

Nothing has changed recently at Hannington.
Delete all you channels by rescanning with no aerial connected are try doing only doing a manual tune on frequency channels 40,41,43,44,46 and 50.

I have been to a number of customers that have, within the last couple of weeks, lost some channels - typically multiplex 43. Two of them I installed a year ago and both had good signals then. S/N ration has dropped to 21db and fluctuating. They all seem to be in a rough SE direction from the transmitter. Are we sure nothing has been done at Hannington?

Can a transmitter engineer please tell us if Mux A channel 43 will remain low, as we have a customer living in the dips of Monkton Farligh who is haveing signal problems.
All was ok, until 6-8 weeks ago, We installed a group E Aerial with new H/Q downlead last year.

Hi. I've just moved to Lychpit in Basingstoke. I have a Sony Freeview. When I auto-tune on analogue I get a halfway decent picture on BBC1 and BBC2, but poor reception for ITV and Channel 4. When I auto-tune in digital I received a whole load of channels (Five USA, ITV4 etc), but not ITV1 or Channel 4 at all. Any ideas as to why this is and what can I do. This is becoming very urgent for me with the world cup just days away!!!! Many Thanks, Rick.

Rickysauce: Are you receiving signals from Hannington (BBC South local news) or Crystal Palace(BBC London news)? If using CP I would certainly use a group A receiving aerial for best gain on required channels. The trouble with putting a high gain aerial in the loft, apart from losing a lot of signal as it passes through roofing materials is the ability to position it correctly for the best signal. Blake recomend that when loft mounting is the only option the aerial should be positioned as close to the roof as possible-not easy with larger arrays!

A high gain roof aerial on Hannington should sort out your problems. Some parts of Lytchpit that are low lying have signal problems. Despite all the comments I, and other installers in the Bsingstoke area, have noticed a drop in signal on channel 43 over the last few weeks - coincidentally when the fire happened on the Oxford transmitter.

A number of people in the Basingstoke area came from London so had London aerials installed instead of, or as well as, a Hannington aerial. If you look at the aerial on the roof - is it pointing towards Hook (London)or Daneshill (Southern)? The back of the aerial is where the grid is. Possibly you have two aerials. If that is the case then you need the London aerial removed and the combining infrastructure removed.
Your own conclusion is correct in that you need an aerial installer.

It was a nice day today so I decided to take a drive to Hannington village and walk up to the transmitting site.

Firstly, the current transmitting aerials for the digital muxes are fitted only on the north-west side of the mast and consist of three stacks of eight panels pointing southwest, northwest and northeast. Anyone to the southeast will never get a very good signal before switchover.

Secondly, there's no obvious sign as to what they've been doing so far. There is clearly work going on as there were plans for the contractors at the gate - adding a couple of new anchor blocks and guy cables so that they can use a cable-car to send people, and possibly also new aerials, aloft. I didn't see it though.

The Health and Safety Executive notification form was also up, with the project description: "Installation of new DSO antenna systems including replacement feeder cables and minor steelwork elements also involving working at height and mechanical/electrical lifting equipment." It gives the start date as 7 December 2009 and a duration of 46 weeks.

The final interesting notice was the planning application! Despite being a government mandate they still have to apply for permissions. The application number is BDB/71821 which you can find at Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council's planning site: planning.basingstoke.gov.uk link icon Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Planning Pages The detailed documents there show that they are going to replace the current cylindrical slot antenna on the top with a new 11-tier antenna of five panels per tier, and replace the current digital panels with a new 8-tier reserve antenna (12 panels per tier).

They can't put the reserve anywhere else on the mast as there are no gaps. It's completely full up with FM radio, DAB radio, assorted dishes, and receiving links from other transmitters (e.g. Rowridge) should the cable feeds fail. There's no plan of works available, but what I would expect is that the current cylinder is split into main and reserve. The digital signals could perhaps be moved temporarily to the reserve half (though they would then be omnidirectional?) and the current digital panels taken down. Then the new reserve could be fitted and all services moved to it, and then the old main cylinder taken down and the new main antenna fitted.

They can't erect a temporary mast because the site is within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which are largely protected against new developments. The comment from the AONB officer was to ask what colour the new panels would be, to make sure they were in keeping with the current character! (White.) (RG47SH)

TVTuner, RickySauce: DigitalUK's predictor won't give a prediction for Hannington, for you, right now. This is because Hannington doesn't actually radiate to the south east. You should use Crystal Palace.

After switchover, CP should be slightly better for PSB muxes and Hannington slightly better for COM muxes. Digital UK's trade predictor is based on the percentage of points within the 100 metre square centred on the address given which should have interference less than 1% of the time. The best transmitter to use will likely depend on where you site the aerial. It's likely to be harder to get good HD from Hannington, though.

On the subject of HD: Briantist, Digital UK are indicating that the HD mux (BBCB/PSB3) will start up on C39 at DSO day 2, and switch to C51 later in 2012. No specific dates yet, though. I'd want to get the new aerials aloft before making firm plans!

as of friday night i have lost signal to all bbc related channels but all others are fine. it has north hants and berks as my transmitter when it used to be harrington. has it changed name or is there a fault at harrington and my transmission has moved? frequency 50 comes up then disappears over and over again, is there anyway to make it stick on another frequency as it keeps moving back to 50? rg21

kate: Instead of a transmitter name you now see a region or area name to identify the source of the signal. This was done to avoid confusion when a relay displayed the name of the parent transmitter. It sounds like there is a signal present on C50 but due to it being poor quality the receiver cannot find any channels. It may be that a signal from a distant transmitter-either analogue or digital is present in addition to the required signal, there is interference from a VCR, sky box or other equipment or the signal has become messy with multiple reflections.

For the last few weeks all channels on DTV CH50 (BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 BBC News) from Hannington have broken up, and in the last 7 days are breaking up badly. I have reported this to the BBC engineering website by filling in the forms, but, no response, and, importantly, no difference in the signal. We're in the Swallowfield area of Berkshire. We've never had a good signal, but it's now gotten to the stage of being unwatchable.

I live in Yateley, GU46 6ES and have been able to recieve all freeview channels for a few years now. Recently, the ITV,Channel 4 and all related channels have been very poor or non existenet. This seems to coincide with recent work done on the transmitter but I cannot be sure. What is sure is a very marked deteriation in reception on MUX 2 and MUX A in particular. Today, for example, there is no signal at all. Can you please advise what has happened and if this will be rectified.

It would appear from my own questions and that of others that something is affecting the quality of signal from hannington transmitter on freeview in recent days. Early this morning all channels were working again but now (11:25am) there is no signal on ITV,Channel4,5 and all related MUX broadcasts. Analogue signals are fine. Can anyone there advise what is wrong or who to contact to get some response.
