The symbol shows the location of the Kilvey Hill transmitter. Your Freeview box may report this transmitter as Wenvoe as this the main regional transmitter. The Kilvey Hill transmitter covers 120,000 homes.

Freeview on Kilvey Hill requires aerial group/position AV, transmitter ERP 383W, at 232m -
The yellow area has the strongest signal from this transmitter, green areas are served by stronger signals from other transmitters, white shows low signal areas. See Overlap Map Key for details.

You may not be able to receive all the Freeview channels

Some channels on the Kilvey Hill transmitter have lower transmission power so you may receive only some of them.

Your cables, connectors and aerial may need upgrading to get all the Freeview channels.

If you are missing your electronic programme guide (EPG), your channel line-up is wrong or incomplete, you have no subtitles or the 'press red' services do not work, please try this reset procedure first.

Mux is an abbreviation of multiplex. The Effective power level takes into account the transmission mode - and does not indicate a fault condition.

Digital switchover process details

Digital switchover happens over a number of weeks, this is to allow people in areas who where unable to use Freeview before switchover time to purchase equipment before the analogue service is terminated.

Wednesday 12th August 2009

ITV-1 swaps to C26. BBC TWO C23 closes. PSB1 starts on C23.

Wednesday 9th September 2009

BBC One C33 closes. BBC Two C26 closes. Channel 4 C29 closes. FIVE C35 closes. Mux 1 C25 closes. Mux 2 C22 closes. Mux A C28 closes. Mux B C32 closes. Mux C C21 closes. Mux D C31 closes.
Freeview power increases from 383 W to 2,000 W, 5 times stronger.
PSB2 starts on C26. COM4 starts on C25. PSB3 starts on C29. COM5 starts on C22. COM6 starts on C28. NEW7 starts on C30.

Self-help relays

Self-help relays are transmitters that are not owned by the broadcasting and transmission companies, but by the local users. An active deflector (AD) re-transmits the analogue broadcasts on the same frequencies as the original broadcasts, while a transposer (T) transmits the received broadcasts on different frequencies.

Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 10,000 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 1,714 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for vertical polarization - the elements going from top to bottom.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

After switchover an existing group A aerial will provide all digital TV services.

Thanks.. I've already tried those things and the EPG comes back for an hour or so then goes again!

It's not really much of a hassle, as I get those channels from wenvoe which DOES have the info, they are on 800+ but I can move them, so it's no hassle having to wait

thanks

Michael: Very interesting reception report: is Caradon up now? How does the CCI between Caradon and Kilvey manifest itself?

Michael: Indoor reception is often characterised by random reflections, so this seems possible. A rooftop aerial should not have interference. I'm not sure we can call it CCI as COFDM is supposed to work with transmitters using the same frequency...

Briantist and industrycinic : I´ve posted
on the Caradon page. I am slightly surprised
at the cross-polar CCI, but it can´t be due
to anything else.Random reflections may well distort effects. The CCI-free COM channels
from Caradon are excellent, all the PSBs
with KH CCI are more or less unwatchable,
despite 85% signal and 55% quality on the
indefatigable "Woolymeter". A proper analyser would doubtless be more informative! Between dso 1 and 2, Caradon A was excellent. I will try to find time later this week for aerial experiments. Screening off the Caradon aerial from KH in front of the chimney might help. I might turn the BB grid round to face south and/or try a log. For clarification: the Silver Sensor log gets dso Preseli, Carmel and Kilvey through the north-facing window and trees. Caradon is by WB bacofoil yagi on a chimney pole.

Actually I am not surprised by this, there have been CCI issues between the UK and Ireland, and in France with high power DVB-T. I noticed that even with horizontal antennas verticals could be received eg in LD17 area and in Cornwall perfectly on DVB-T systems, This is due to external reflections and repolarisation effects. It could have serious implications for coverage. They should have operated Caradon and Stockland as SFNs which would have eliminated the problem: instead you have a lot of people losing service who will be very disgruntled today. Cute shielding is needed eg a log and using the building as a shield in Michael's case. Bacofoil Yagis have no directivity!

Briantist: NB COFDM only works with transmitters using the same frequencies which are transmitting the same data and which are synchronised. This is NOT the case with the current emerging CCI problems between Caradon, KH and Stockland.

Briantist: Why should be surprised? Ofcom and Co live in a theoretical world and the UK kas a long history of technology cockups masterminded by them and their predecessor entities with many of the same dramatis personae. In addition the Bristol Channel area is spectrally very congested and tricky to serve because of the topography on either side.

I think it is easier to predict where signals will go over water than over land, the model they use is sophisticated, the have assure me.

Brian, yes, after the September 9th full switchover, the box is now behaving properly again!

However, for the last few days, we've been getting text messages flash up on various channels warning us we'll need to retune AGAIN on 30th September! The following doc. seems to verify this, but I've not heard of this change anywhere else - do you have details?

As for the OFCOM argument, I agree with Brian. I also think that some of you others need to seperate OFCOM bureaucracy / politics from OFCOM engineering. (map)

Jamie Jones: There would be more if I could actually get Freeview to actually say which channels is going to which multiplex.

Moving ITV3 and ITV4 from multiplex 2 makes way for FIVE and one other channel. I think this could have been ITV1+1, but this seems to have been cancelled.

There have been suggestions that ITV3 and ITV4 will move to Multiplex D, but this is owned by Arqiva, whereas Multiplex A belongs to SDN, which is 100% owned by ITV, but mux A is very full already.

As soon as I know exactly what is going where, there will be updates. But probably not next week as my shoulder is being operated on.
