I live in Dunstable, Beds and until recently have had relatively good reception on all freeview channels. However, for the past few days I have had zero reception from the analogue aerial which had been fine. I've also tried a "one for all" digital aerial, still nothing, and finally a different freeview box, still nothing.

I've checked and double checked all of the connections and I'm now at a complete loss as to why I'm no longer receiving any signal.

Have there been any problems with the Oxford transmitter?

Braintist: Unfortunately I cannot watch analogue either.

I can't do anything regarding the position of the exterior aerial as it is a communal one.

Lee: if you can't watch any analogue signals either then it will have failed and either you need to be reconnected to it or the aerial requires replacement.

Thanks Briantist. For no apparent reason I seem to have good reception on most channels again. Maybe is was just atmospherics.

Hi,

I can't get ITV channels with a loft mounted digital tv aerial (from Argos recently).

Any advice?

TMP
Briantist
Monday 8 January 2007 11:46PM
Tim: multiplexes 2 and A use 64QAM mode which is very hard to receive with a loft mounted aerial. You should ideally relocate the aerail onto the roof, or you can try using satellite grade coxaxial cable to connect the aerial in the loft to the set-top box, but there is no guarentee that this will work.

Under wet/windy conditions in Goring we lose all of the ITV channels and channel4. BBC channels and channel 5 are not affected.

Is there anything we can do? Will the problem disappear at "switchover" or become worse because of the use of 64QAM mode for all channels?

Look forward to your comments.
Briantist
Wednesday 10 January 2007 11:24PM
Alan Matthews: if you have a loft mounted aerial, then it is quite possible that the situation will get worse after switchover. However, the signals will all be at much higher power which should at least compensate for the change of mode.
A

Friday 12 January 2007 3:37PM
Briantist: Thanks for your comments. We have a roof mounted aerial which has been working well for some 3+ years. I'm concerned that 64QAM mode might be particularly sensitive to atmospheric conditions and that we might need an even bigger/better aerial.

Any thoughts?
Briantist
Friday 12 January 2007 5:53PM
Alan Matthews: 64QAM mode is certainly more prone to interference problems. When switchover happens and the power output is increased, this will, we are assured, overcome these problems.

As I am trying to get mobile connections would it be helpful to have the Lat/Long coordinates of the transmitters so that with a GPS I can get an accurate compass heading to point the aerial, or would that be overkill/ waste of effort etc.

Hi, purchased and installed a Humax PVR 9200t Monday last week, and got great reception on all the channels. On Saturday I turned it on and found all the BBC (except BBC 4) were no longer available. At first thought it was a fault with the Humax, but plugged my old Goodmans freeview box in and discovered the same problem! Any ideas?
Cheers

My Freeview box (Logik LDR-1) can't seem to get any BBC channels other than BBC4. All the other channels it can detect are fine. I've turned off all the devices that might interfere (Xbox and Wii) but it can't hold the picture for more than a few seconds. I live in the centre of Oxford, and the aerial on the building is four storeys up. Any ideas?
Briantist

Beau: also try turning off any boosters as they may be causing the problem. If that does not work, then you may need to upgrade your aerial to a type with more "elements".

HI, I live in the Cotswolds and get freeview channels from Oxford just fine on my Digifusion stb but my Hauppauge WinTV Nova USB tuner for my PC will not lock onto the group 2 64QAM group (ITV, Channel 4 etc). When scanning it sees them but will not lock and save them.

Any ideas ? The aerial is new and in the roof space and works OK with the set top box.
Briantist
Monday 26 March 2007 10:02PM
Steve: the USB sticks seem to need a lot more signal, and so the loft will cause the problems you have with the 64QAM mode channels. www.ukfree.tv link icon Loft aerials | ukfree.tv - get free UK television You could try the old "in the loft" favorites of using satellite-grade cable to connect the aerial to the set-top box or using an amplifier in the loft. However moving the aerial to the roof would still be the best option.

Hi there

i live in Horspath in Oxford, Postcode is OX33 1PJ

i have taken 3 x FREEVIEW boxes back to Argos as they keep jumping and skipping when watching and playing back recorded programmes.
i have a feeling it MUST be because of our poor signal maybe?
we have an Aerial in the loft with a booster.. its been in there for about 7 years

does anyone know of a reputable Aerial Supplier and fitter in my area who would come and sort out my annoying problem?
what would the cost be (on average) ?

Thanks

This weekend, I installed a new digital TV, and I cannot get any of the digital BBC channels - analogue is fine.

Wazzer: Either it's the current engineering work 'OXON All TV Breaks/weak signal 30/04-02/05 OXON BBC TV Breaks/weak signal 30/04-02/05 (Digital)' or you are using a group C/D aerial rather than a wideband one.

I am interested to see that other Freeview viewers seem to be experincing a drop in quality from the Oxford transmitter. I have not changed my setup in any way for two years and even though no problems are reported with the transmitter at the moment, I too have noticed a drop in quality over the last few months, particularly in bad weather. I will have to implement a few of your recommended `tweeks' to improve my reception. Thanks for a very useful site.

I have been receiving all desired channels for the last 2 or more years. I now am finding that Cbeebies has now degraded to a quality of c10% and the kids are up in arms! I live in OX27. I have changed no equipment and the arial doesn't appear to have moved.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this, works on transmitter???

Help greatly appreciated.

I live in Aylesbury (HP20) and have noticed a drop in Freeview signal strength from the Oxford Transmitter. This has been particularly apparent when I watch or record episodes of Frasier. As soon as the screen goes black for the into. graphic or the title cards that punctuate the show, I often lose the signal completely. My software vendor tells me this is a result of a weak signal. The strange thing is, like Ralph above, this behaviour seems to have arisen since the April. Any ideas why the signal has suddenly become so poor?

I only invested in new aerials and other paraphernalia a couple of years ago so I'm pretty peeved about the situation.

Any explanation for this poor quality signal please ? Thanks.

I have been living in OX3 for 11 years and used the same equipment the whole time.

Every year the reception degrades at the beginning of summer (end of April time) and then recovers again by autume (sometime in September).

It is the same every year. I would complain but I don't know where to address my complaint.

mike gibson: sounds like you might have trees between your TV aerial and the transmitter. If you don't want to take a chainsaw to them, a longer pole on the aerial usually helps.

But now we cannot seem to get ITV2 for some reason. Before I start renewing aerials, or cables etc... could you give me some advice as to what the problem could be. I dont think its the tv or set up as we are receiving the other channels without problems. Could you also recommend what Aerial would be best (rooftop monted).

Have just got freeview with a Sony TV a DVD recorder, still with old aerial.
Can get most channels but picture quality I think could be better. Signal quality is 80-90% and signal styrength is 40-60%. Are these values ok ?
Also my aerial is about 5 degrees off where my neighbours two aerials are pointing- using 2pir this means that it is pointing 1 km east of the Oxford transmitter - is this signifucant ?

Thanks

I live in the Kidlington OX5 area. I have been getting good reception for over 2 years with my freeview box in one room using an analogue aerial in the roof. I have recently setup BT Vision in another room attached to a digital aerial, also in the roof.ITV 1,3,4 and Channel 4 signals are often very weak and sometimes disappear altogether. The BT technical support have told me that the BT Vision Box needs a stronger signal than many other boxes. Hence, the weak signals for these channels off the Oxford Transmitter are made worse by this. I find this incredible.I have an unreliable setup distributed by the leading telecommunication company in the UK! Any thoughts, advice etc?
