All this whole Oxford transmitter debacle has done for me is finally help me make the decision to switch to freesat when I get a new TV this year and forget freeview, even freeview HD does not interest me now if this is the sort of thing that is going to happen with freeview...let's face it support for it has always been shonky anyway. Oh, and I still have not got any of my 8 MUX 2 channels back...not even convinced they will be back in April to be honest.

Julien: All the channels in the multiplex are in the same broadcast bitstream, you will get them all perfectly or not at all.

Freesat is a great option to use alongside Freeview.

Thank God for TVCatchup!

Getting a much better signal out in Banbury now. Still a little dodgy on 3&4 Mux, and requires a signal booster here.

It's the middle of March right now, isn't it?

I was in Oxford for the weekend and I had a TV in my YHA room. Coming from a now Digital only region (NW England), it was so fantastic to see dear old analogue again. You could see every wrinkle in David Dimbleby's face on analogue BBC One : Question Time and it was great seeing Ceefax again. I still remembered all my favourite page No.s on BBC One & Two. And the grass was totally unpixelated on <Match of the Day. Oh how I miss analogue. Who needs Freeview !! Whilst in nostalgia mode, I watched the first episode of Inspector Morse on video tape in full screen 4:3 when I got home (Dead in Jericho), as it featured the Bookbinders pub, College Cruises and Canal Reach which I passed when walking along the canal. The video tape had no one talking over the full screen end credits, much shorter ad breaks and the Central Independent Television ident at the beginning and end, bliss !!

I miss the old ITV idents too Nedbod, my favouries were ATV (In Colour), LWT, Thames, HTV and Southern. The Yorkshire TV logo emerging from a pool of gold was ace too !! (although to me it always looked more like a "v" than a "Y"). I also miss CEEFAX. I hate being forced to watch a small indent picture whilst reading the digital text, most distracting. We are forced to watch very "busy" screens these days. If it's not scrolling text it's spinning logos with breaking news banners with black thick bars scrolling across the screen from left to right which make you think there's something wrong with your TV to the extent that you call the repair man out, only to be told that is what BBC News Channel is actually broadcasting. Why for God's sake !!The world has gone bonkers.

I am in Aylesbury and lost freeview signals about 15th Feb. Analogue signal looks like a snow storm - so I abandoned TV in favour of catch up TV via the PC. It is Ok, but I would like to watch my TV for other things rather than DVD's - so could anyone provide us with a closer date for the transmitter to come back on other than 'early April'. Friends are getting a little fed up of me visiting them to watch football, and my parents have seen more of me this last few weeks than ever before (they have Sky). Thanks from an increasing desperate viewer.

OXFORD transmitter - ord Transmitter Works: Since Monday 01 February 2010, transmissions from Oxford have been from a reserve antenna, which may be affecting reception for some viewers. This is in preparation for digital switchover work and signals are currently liable to reduced power and short interruptions, for which we apologise. Updated information: due to unexpected technical issues, the work is now scheduled to finish in late April / early May, provided the weather continues to improve. [DUK] Over the next week Oxford main transmitter: TV (analogue) working normally, TV (digital) working normally, Radio (analogue) Possible weak signal, Radio (digital) Possible weak signal. [DUK]

Aerial guys are making great business adding amps to unuspecting users aerials. When Oxfords back up to full power they will make even more by removing these amps. What a con.

Monday 22 March 2010 1:56PM
We also have lost everything except BBC. Unfortunately something is also up with the freeview timing signal, as it drives our Humax PVR nuts, it frequently gets horribly confused about what it's recording, enters multiple recordings on the list etc,etc even when recording BBC.

We wrote to query it and were effectively told tough luck, it's only affecting a few people...
LutonFan
Monday 22 March 2010 4:48PM Bedford
Mark- Try to reset the Humax box via 'Default settings'. This tends to cure any recording problems.

Mark
Tuesday 23 March 2010 2:44PM

Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I've reset to default, so it now knows nothing about ITV, Ch 5 etc. Will see if that helps!

I see the info at the top now says "no reported problems"
LutonFan
Tuesday 23 March 2010 8:00PM
Mark- Please let me know if that has cured your recording problems.

I have read somewhere that if you are one of the few viewers affected by the reserve transmitter, you may have poor quality cabling. Not sure if this would apply to yourself, but bear that in mind. Not sure if one of the aerial guys could confirm this.
Briantist
Wednesday 24 March 2010 8:44AM
Shaun: No, you can't get a refund. Not sure why you would ask for one when you are getting the services from the BBC.
Mark
Wednesday 24 March 2010 11:34AM Abingdon
Tried the reset to default on the Humax, doesn't seem to have made any difference, we are still getting multiple entries of recorded programmes, wrong programme names, incomplete programmes, programmes not recording at all etc. So basically we seem to be limited to BBC1 and 2 only and can't even record those reliably.

We had new aerial and cabling a year or so ago, and all was fine before the transmitter work, so I'm assuming it's down to that.

I think the problem is probably due to a combination of poor reception of timing signals due to low antenna signals and some bugs in the Humax software that screw up the programme indexing if the signal is poor.

cheers,

Mark

Briantist
Wednesday 24 March 2010 3:34PM

What sort of "antenna upgrade" have you had?

LutonFan
Wednesday 24 March 2010 10:40PM
Mark- In your first post, you stated that you wrote to query it and you were told 'tough luck'. To whom did you contact? I believe you may have a faulty box.

Two Humax boxes, eg 9200 and 9150 have had sluggish response times since the National retune and the latter has had several firmware updates. Not sure if this is contributing to your problem.

Alan Flockton
Thursday 25 March 2010 9:12AM
Well that's another new one. The BT Vision Box requires a stronger signal than other boxes. Assuming you're right (I've no reason to doubt you) I'm not best pleased with BT. We had a long email correspondence a few months back, they never mentioned this, and were very strongly of the opinion that it was nothing to do with them, why was I commenting to them about the poor quality of my picture?
Alan Flockton
Thursday 25 March 2010 9:17AM
This is my final comment. I'm getting fed up with all this.

However I do need to say again you are all missing the main point. The powers that be have CHOSEN to lower the signal on things people want to watch (BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies, ITV1, Channel 4) in order to provide more power to the things they don't want to watch (shopping channels and 25 year old episodes of Minder.)

That is a political choice.
Briantist
Thursday 25 March 2010 1:02PM
Alan Flockton: As far as I understand it, the move to the reserve mast is a technical matter, not a political one.

Dave: I would still suggest you wait until the work on the transmitter is done and the services are restored to the main transmitter element from the top of the mast before you spend any more money.

If you do spend more money, I would grab a Freesat installation as this is good for the channels on Multiplex 2.

Lost ITV channels as well as C4 & C5 yesterday. Retuned today and have got back but picture is rubbish.
