You may not be able to receive all the Freeview channels

Some channels on the Carmel transmitter have lower transmission power so you may receive only some of them.

Your cables, connectors and aerial may need upgrading to get all the Freeview channels.

If you are missing your electronic programme guide (EPG), your channel line-up is wrong or incomplete, you have no subtitles or the 'press red' services do not work, please try this reset procedure first.

Mux is an abbreviation of multiplex. The Effective power level takes into account the transmission mode - and does not indicate a fault condition.

Digital switchover process details

Digital switchover happens over a number of weeks, this is to allow people in areas who where unable to use Freeview before switchover time to purchase equipment before the analogue service is terminated.

Wednesday 26th August 2009

ITV-1 swaps to C63. BBC TWO C60 closes. PSB1 starts on C60.

Wednesday 23rd September 2009

BBC One C57 closes. BBC Two C63 closes. Channel 4 C53 closes. Mux 1 C55 closes. Mux 2 C65 closes. Mux A C59 closes. Mux B C62 closes. Mux C C68 closes. Mux D C66 closes.
Freeview power increases from 2,417 W to 15,000 W, 6 times stronger.
PSB2 starts on C53. COM4 starts on C54. PSB3 starts on C57. COM5 starts on C58. COM6 starts on C61. NEW7 starts on C52.

Self-help relays

Self-help relays are transmitters that are not owned by the broadcasting and transmission companies, but by the local users. An active deflector (AD) re-transmits the analogue broadcasts on the same frequencies as the original broadcasts, while a transposer (T) transmits the received broadcasts on different frequencies.

Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 100,000 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 12,857 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for horizontal polarization - the elements going from left to right.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

After switchover an existing group C/D aerial will provide all digital TV services.

Michael: Very impressive. The reason why Carmel does not interfere with Ilfracombe is that although they share the same channels they are cross-polar. I think this gives a better than 20dB protection ratio.

Industrycynic : Sure, but Caradon and Kilvey are likewise cross-polar, but with strong CCI, which is alleviated to a degree by aerial screening. The path across water can "twist" polarisation, which seems to happen with Kilvey-Caradon. The trade predictor indicated Carmel co-channel muxes would be much weaker here, suggesting a Carmel notch to the south. However, the signal is strong, just marginally weaker than the others. The significant difference between Kilvey-here-Caradon and Carmel-here-Ilfracombe signal paths is that the former is almost a straight line, whereas Carmel is north and Ilfracombe east of here. I´ll try a rooftop aerial and see if CCI then occurs.Ilfracombe is close, but at 56w erp maybe not enough oomph to upset Carmel. Early days yet. I will
experiment and report back in due course.

So being ignorant now. When will SKY3,Sky News, Sky sports news be available? or are they subscription channels? on the freeview website they're listed as available, likewise for talksport?

The three SKY channels are still freeview on Arquiva A: Carmel channel 58, Preseli channel 45, Kilvey channel 22. Manual retuning the relevant channel should bring them back. A
factory reset may be required by some receivers. There were reports that SKY intended
to replace these free channels with subscription channels... Application still sitting on an Ofcom desk?

COULD BE BAD NEWS FROM NORTH DEVON COAST.
Around lunchtime, Ilfracombe muxes went down
to zero. They came back later, but with variable quality and strength. Too soon to diagnose, but it could be directly due to CCI
with tidal polarisation twist from Carmel and/or that "they" twiddled because of interference from the Carmel new-punch. If screening etc. does not resolve the issue, we may end up without any stable signal from Devon or Cornwall. I shall be monitoring...

This evening the three Ilfracombe muxes are
normal again off an aerial screened from Carmel by the roof ridge, but not off a
higher, more exposed aerial. Smells like
tide-twisted CCI... I shall monitor and correlate with tides. Now that Huntshaw is no longer co-ch with Carmel as pre-dso, just maybe "they" will allow us noble peasants of the extreme North Devon wastelands to receive North Devon transmissions. Failing that, I may have to convert my chimney into an elevated chicken run with judiciously strung up screening. We shall see...

Just got a call from a respected resident
down in the valley, which is served by a self-help relay fed from Ilfracombe.
The village ain´t ´appy with today´s sudden
vicissitudes. Until yesterday they had a
superbly stable signal on all three PSB muxes.
Oops!

Just did a factory reset and tried Huntshaw,
now that Carmel has vacated theco-channels.All three PSBs now good. But no COMs. The predictor indicates they will improve in time. So there is hope if I can´t screen Ilfracombe from Carmel. This might work for the village
likewise.

Hi
Further to my posting of 17th Sept about my experiences with the Carmel transmitter, I re-tuned on 23rd Sept and - disaster! Under clear blue skies, no BBC channels (and some others) whatsoever. However they did return intermittently under cloud cover. Yesterday's re-tune simply changed the channels that are giving problems. Only one thing for it. I'm going to have to scrap my trusty yagi aerial (which has provided almost perfect digital reception for the last five years - until now) and have something more appropriate installed.
If that doesn't work, I shall be depositing my Freeview box at the local civic amenities site and taking out a subscription with those politically activated Australians who run Sky.
Regards (SA4 8HS)

Nigel Richards: With a suitable rooftop aerial you get perfect reception, but if you are missing a single multiplex, I would check Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV + switchover advice, since 2002 before making a purchase.

The retune did not change any transmitter output levels or formats.

My signal is/was from Preseli and I retuned my set top box on Wed as reccomended and all was well, channel 45 had a few Sky channels that were not there before. Unfortunately these dissapeared later that night and channel 45 now seems to be empty, will these return?
All other channels are OK with a good signal strength.

Well, folks, there must be nascent suspicion
of a hush-hush Assembly migration programme.
All Preseli, Carmel and Kilvey muxes warm up our aerials here on the bonnie south coast of the Bristol Channel :-) We confidently expect Wenvoe to likewise favour us with its balm next spring... More seriously: unless you live in a luxuriant valley, a reset and manual retune of the desired channels should bring joy now that the main transmitters are on higher power. If all else fails, you could settle for Huntshaw and/or Caradon exports...

My mum lost C5 a few weeks ago so I have searched for channels and reset the Freeview boxbox. Now she has channel 5 however on channel ten she has ITV3 except that it's showing Channel 5 content? She is off Ridge Hill (Centre of Gloucester). Any ideas? Signal quality is excellent and her ariel is on the roof of a very high block of flats.

Should I be able to receive ALL, repeat ALL the Carmel channels or do some relays not re-transmit all those of a "parent" transmitter?
