Digital switchover process details

Digital switchover happens over a number of weeks, this is to allow people in areas who where unable to use Freeview before switchover time to purchase equipment before the analogue service is terminated.

Wednesday 19th August 2009

ITV-1 swaps to C40. BBC TWO C43 closes. PSB1 starts on C43.

Wednesday 16th September 2009

BBC One C46 closes. BBC Two C40 closes. Channel 4 C50 closes. FIVE C37 closes. Mux 1 C47 closes. Mux 2 C51 closes. Mux A C39 closes. Mux B C42 closes. Mux C C45 closes. Mux D C49 closes.
Freeview power increases from 1,333 W to 15,000 W, 11 times stronger.
PSB2 starts on C46. COM4 starts on C42. PSB3 starts on C50. COM5 starts on C45. COM6 starts on C49. NEW7 starts on C30.

Self-help relays

Self-help relays are transmitters that are not owned by the broadcasting and transmission companies, but by the local users. An active deflector (AD) re-transmits the analogue broadcasts on the same frequencies as the original broadcasts, while a transposer (T) transmits the received broadcasts on different frequencies.

Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 100,000 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 12,857 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for horizontal polarization - the elements going from left to right.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

After switchover, you will have needed to upgrade to a Wideband aerial to receive some or all digital television services.

Thank you for your reply just curious where did you find out about the reception change on October the 7th?. Also where I live I have a relay transmitter less than a mile from me but it does not have all the channels so that is why I try to source from Preseli.I also have tried connecting the aerial straight to the tv but had no reception. The cable that came with the aerial was a little bit short from reaching my tv so had use a aerial connector and more coax.

October is listed in the DUK table, but I´m
not sure where I found 7th. SDN and ArqA
should then be stronger here, the others
unchanged. Check your own location on DUK
to see if you can expect any similar improvement. Tweaking your installation is your best hope. If not, you might be able to
receive the weak mux from another tx until finality in 2013 - but this would probably require an additional aerial.

Additional coax connections will induce
additional loss, but this would probably only
be evident in a borderline case - or if the
connections are dodgy. Move the TV closer temporarily to avoid the extension coax and see if there is any improvement. Some connecting coax cables with moulded plugs are sub-standard. If better, it might be worth using sat-quality cable and good quality plug/socket connectors to make up your own extension - unless you can replace
the whole length to the aerial. It is just possible you have a co-channel interference problem on the weak mux. Cross-check DUK tables! I have that issue here with Carmel/Ilfracombe and Kilvey/Caradon. Carmel moved channels yesterday. It used to wipe out Huntshaw, but now it wipes out Ilfracombe and Huntshaw is back. As my Irish best mate used to say: these things are sent to try us!

Thanks for your reply. The reason I didn't change the original cable was it was sealed on the aerial. Will take on board what you have said and will look into it.I still have the option to get rid of my booster an attach a mast booster as well at a later date. For now I will try some new cables etc inside and see if this helps.

Can confirm after todays retune my COM5 has drastically improved. e.g Sky Sports News used to be : SIGNAL STRENGTH 60%
SIGNAL QUALITY 24%

It is has now gone to:
SIGNAL STRENGTH 70%
SIGNAL QUALITY 100%

All other channels in COM5 have similar signal strengths. (map)

David (and Brian) : Good News! The DUK table was obviously not current. Their installer update states power increase today, as we observe. For comparison, Preseli here at 13:30:-
ArqB : 60% and 95% Q (power up March 2010)
ArqA : 78% and 97% Q
SDN : 76% and 97% Q
Here these may fluctuate with tides, of course.

Thanks for your advice Briantist. I've removed the aerial from PC, retuned and got nothing as advised, reconnected aerial, rescanned and get the same thing as earlier. All channels are their and working except the likes of Five USA, Fiver, Virgin etc. The channels appear in the found channels list but upon selecting the screen is black and the message 'No signal' appears. Seeing as our freeview boxes are all OK would it be fair to say its a New PC Tuner Card needed?

BBC-B from Huntshaw, Carmel and Preseli now shows a "has moved" notice plus the 302 with chirpy retune admonishment and glorious flashbacks to 405 lines. Those were the days...

I have neglected Ilfracombe/Carmel today.
Just now all three Ilfracombe muxes were
unresolvable. There was no reason to expect
any improvement. I will continue to monitor this, and maybe try screening (now that I don´t have to for Caradon/Kilvey. I also need to monitor boosted Preseli, and Carmel

None were outstanding quality but that don't bother me as I have the standard channels already. Hi there can anyone help? I bought a Philips DTR 120 STB yesterday, 0% signal 0% quality from an aerial previously used succesfully (prior to switchover)with a sagem box (aerial is a standard 16/18 bay aerial (not sure if it is high gain) and is some 100 yards away in a field on top of hill pointing towards Preseli transmitter).
I have built today believe it or not an aerial out of a foil dish, a beer can, copper wire and co-ax with booster. It picks up 43 channels with some 80% reception 80% quality and is pointing toward and picking up Haverfordwest transmitter it seems. Can anyone therefore recommend a good indoor or outdoor aerial or dish to make this permanent, or should I look at other options for Preseli transmitter? (map)

Leinster, Preseli, Ilfracombe are more or less
on a straight line. Thus far no affect on Preseli COMs noted here, probably due to relative distances. Are the Leinster trials 24/7 or only at intervals?

Have the major interference issues (Ilfracombe and worse) been collated? Is Ofcom waiting before contemplating action? No change at Ilfracombe as yet. MP appears to have new priorities now... Some viewers have found an alternative, many have no other option. Our village self-help still
unwatchable for extended periods.

MichaeL; You are too far away from Mount Leinster. RTE Mount Leinster is on 24x7 on 39, 42, 45, 49. Do you see anything on 39 which is clear of Preseli (you are too close). NB RTE are MPEG4 T1, so on a UK Freeview MPEG2 only box you only get the LCNs and soujnd. BT Vision and the Sagem Picnic box give pictures. The forthcoming DVB-T2 boxes will also decode RTE.

No news on Ilfracombe but retuning and CCI emerging as a major issue in Granadaland.
