We still can not get half of the channels we used to receive from the Waltham transmitter, including ITV programmes, channel-4 and channel-5.

We contacted the local TV ariel company again and was told that it is a widespread problem here in north nottinghamshire and that it will probably be November before we can get these channels again as the signal is not of sufficient strength as yet to reach the area.
Is this true, and if so why is it happening?

sheilan: Yes, you will have to wait until 31 Aug 11 when the multiplex moves to C54- at switchover.
Briantist
Wednesday 11 May 2011 5:21PM
billy: You will have to wait for the full power Freeview signals at switchover, as you are not in a full-service area until then.

You must pay your TV Licence if you have a TV set, that is the law.

You could move your aerial to point at the Belmont transmitter, you will receive all service from there today.

Billy (1.50pm posting): As far as your Aunt is concerned, if its the area I think that you may be referring to there is a great possibility that Freesat might well be her only option as RF dead areas do exist and Uppingham does contain some difficult terrain as far as reception is concerned, however as far as your own reception is concerned do you know if the aerial installer actually tested for a signal from Sandy (Anglia) rather than concentrating on Waltham?

The reason I enquire is, I am located in a difficult area West of Stamford and prior to Sandy's "main" transmitters switching to high power operation I could barely receive any signal whatsoever from there, whereas after switchover I immediately started to receive quite a viewable signal on my Panasonic TV with indications of approx 65% strength and 85% quality, however after having made some alterations to my aerial set up I now get a consistent 100% on both strength and quality (inc perfect HD channel reception!), these results now enabling me to use Sandy as my main station and keep Waltham as the second choice via a differently positioned aerial.

It should be said though that in difficult non line of sight areas involving valleys etc the usual rule adopted by many (although not all!) aerial installers of "one type fits all" (usually some form of Yagi and mounted as high as possible) can actually result in an inferior signal, as in these type of situations experimentation is always necessary for satisfactory results, with in my particular case me finding that the aerial directed towards Sandy gave a far superior signal / quality reading when mounted at a particular gutter level position to when being tried out on the chimney.

That said though, I would hold off doing anything until after Waltham has switched to high power operation in August, as I feel that a high percentage of problems presently experienced by many who use this transmitter could well be rectified after this event, that is allowing for the fact that digital terrestrial reception can never really be as glitch free as what's obtained from satellite reception.

karen: Waltham is at 221 degrees, roughly SW from your location. Aerials on Belmont point in a NNE/NE direction at 31 degrees. The Digital UK postcode checker predicts a full service from Waltham but only four muxes from Belmont, no prediction being offered for MuxC or MuxD. Have you checked the 800s of the channel list for duplicate BBC channels? It is possible that weak Belmont channels were found and stored before the stronger Waltham signal was found.Regarding MuxA from Waltham it is just possible that analogue Channel 4 on C29 from Bilsdale is strong enough to cause interference. After Bilsdale switchover Mux SDN is shown as variable reception for you from Waltham. Did you try doing a factory reset before scanning in case any channel information was already stored which was confusing the tuner?

I live in LE2 and currently choose the waltham transmitter, my tuner only shows a signal strength of 5/6 although the research shows i should have a stronger sutton coldfield signal (i do not want birmingham news etc), When the DSO is complete will i get a better signal from Waltham and if so will a stronger digital signal improve freeview+ boxes reliability as i have heard some crashes/lockups/freezes and corrupt recordings are due to poor signal strength?

Mark - a '5/6 signal strength' is by far enough signal for your Freeview + box to work correctly. You will not encounter freezes or lockups or anything.
A signal strength that is 1/2/3 out of 6 would not be able to cope but 5/6 is fine.

Since mid day yesterday, 1st June, we have not been able to receive any of the BBC, ITV, C4 and 5 channels on any of our 3 freeview boxes.
Even our no digital TV we get very poor reception on all but Channel 5.
We have rescanned with out any improvement and have even lost some channels such a 5USA...
The Ariel is only 3 months old, with all new cableing.

How come after switchover channel 29 will be used for MUX SDN on Waltham but is to be used for MUX new8 on Sutton Coldfield? Wont this cause problems or is it just a typing error.

We have suddenly lost Mux 2 at Watham...based in NG14...i see signal strength on this page for this Mux is low...could this be to do with the weather....?!?!

Ian: If Mux New8 ever comes into being it would be very low power and aimed at Birmingham, so would not cause undue problems to Waltham viewers. The rather odd choice of C29 for the SDN mux at Waltham is the direct result of the shortage of available frequencies
in some areas created by the Digital Dividend. The COM muxes at Belmont and Waltham had to be found frequencies not in use at high power in overlapping areas. This gave C53, C56, C57 and C60, with C30 for Belmont and C29 for Waltham as a compromise. Even this arrangement leaves C29 at Chesterfield and C57 at Bolehill overlapping with areas served by Waltham, albeit with signals using vertical polarisation.

Ben: The relative powers shown in the signal bars above do not refer to a fault or change to the transmitter. Mux2 and MuxA (both 64QAM and 8kW) carry more services at the expense of coverage, although this is normally only noticed towards the edge of the coverage area. The comparison for all the muxes is shown against the coverage of the mux with the best coverage, in this case Mux1 (16QAM and 10kW). If you have suddenly lost Mux2 it is most likely to be either single frequency interference on C31, wet leaves or reflections off wet roofs in the signal path causing deterioration of signal quality or ingress of rainwater in the cable.

So will channel 59 on waltham (new8) be the same? if so why didn't they use this for mux sdn and 29 for new8 on waltham, at least then 1000s wouldn't have needed to change to a wide band aerial, or do ofcom have shares in areal company's???

Ian: The coverage areas for the 'interleaved' multiplexes are extremely limited, while it is intended that the three COM muxes should have equal coverage.

You can see the proposed map for NEW7 at www.ukfree.tv link icon Interleaved Frequencies maps | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice though note that this is based on the template and not on a practical aerial, so the covered area is likely to be even smaller.

As for wideband aerials, you had to have one for digital from Waltham before switchover, so there is in fact no change. The planners have only been required to make the PSB channels available within the old analogue aerial group - the commercial muxes are seen as an add-on service which is why they are *not* required to be made available from the relays.

I am in LE2 and lost all mux2 channels during the re-tune on 13th April. I still have poor-no signal and am getting steadily more frustrated as no amount of re-tuning or checking wires has helped.
I live in a block of flats with a shared aerial and none of my neighbours have reported problems. My tv has inbuilt freeview and is less than 10 months old.

The oddest thing I have discovered is that (contrary to "normal" tvs) I regain signal when it is raining. I just checked, it started raining 5 minutes ago. 5 minutes ago I had no access to mux2, now I have good signal and all ITV, channel 4 etc services.

Has anyone else heard of this happening or have experience with this? I really don't know what to do about it.
