I live in Sheffield (Beauchief) and can see the transmitter (approx 5km away). I recieve all channels ok, with the exception of CH4, E4, more 4 and sky 3. E4+1 and More4+1 are fine. No idea why -I can only assume some channels are coming from Emley Moor and are just not strong enough.....

These channels are on the multiplex C on C45. Check to see if your VHS player or some other equipment is modulating onto this frequency. Otherwise, if you are using a signal booster try turning it off or removing it, as these can often stop Freeview signals from working. You may need a new aerial (class I perhpas) to be able to get a good enough signal.

Hi, I normally receive a very good reception in the Sheffield area, however Channels 3, 4 etc (Multiplex 2) have completely disappeared! This has happenend to my neighbour too. Is there a problem with the transmitter? It is very annoying.

The channels on the two multiplexes that broadcast in 64QAM mode have more problems with interference caused by The Inversion Effect. These channels are on multiplex 2 (ITV-1, -2, -3, -4, CITV, C4, E4, More4, QuizCall) and multiplex A (five, QVC and Top-up TV. If you had borderline reception normally, the change in atmosperic conditions will be pronounced.

I'm in Sheffield (Norfolk Park) and am experiencing strange problems with Freeview reception in the last few days. Usually I can get the major channels (apart from 5 and its new sister channels) no problem but the other day several channels suddenly became pixellated and unwatchable, including ITV1, 2 and 4, BBC4, Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 (in fact pretty much anything with a 4 in the name!). Then yesterday this position reversed - the 4s came back on stream (apart from Film4) and I lost BBC 1, 2 and 3! I assume this is just due to atmospheric conditions but my Freeview box has been behaving strangely too - have aliens landed?

I can only get BBCs.

Not even basic ITV.

I spoke to the Helpline people and they said it was because I was coming from Belmont !!

I check this site and see there is a Freeview transmitter 9km from my house :)

To further confuse, last night I got lost of other chanells, ITVS, Film Fours etc

Very confusing. I tried your fix, but no joy :(

Any ideas ?

Phil: as the channels are carried in 'multiplexes' if you loose one, you will loose them all. So ITV1, 2, 3, 4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, and Film4+1 will go together, as will BBC4 and cBeebies (on B) and BBC1, 2, 3, CBBC, and News 24. Film4 is on multiplex D. It could be down to the Inversion Effect, or it could be down to local problems with your aerial or cables.
Briantist
Friday 29 December 2006 11:03AM
Jamie: the only transmitter you have line-of-sight to is Belmont, and you are too far away from this to get a reliable Freeview signal at present. You do not have a reliable line-of-sight to the nearer Sheffield or Chesterfield transmitter, and their Freeview signals probably will not reach your location.

We live in Gamston, Nottingham, between West Bridgford & Radcliffe. We bought a DVD set with Freeview and were told that we could/would receive Freeview channels. We receive very few channels, only BBC progs + 'Auctions' + Music. We do not receive the likes of ITV (all), Channel 4/E4/TCM/Eurosport.
Comments/thoughts appreciated.

Maurice: do you have a rooftop wideband aerial? What is your postcode please?
Maurice
Monday 19 February 2007 10:44PM
Briantist,
We do not have a rooftop wideband aerial because we were told
1. We did not require one.
2. If the signal is weak, a new aerial would not provide the answer until the full switchover.

From the information on the Freeview web site we can receive all channels, however ,what they do not advise is the strength of the signal. I am assuming that if the signal coming into our aerial, whether or not wideband, is weak, which from the details on the relevant Freeview channels on the TV would seem to be the case, this would make the current Freeview service limited viewing.

Brian,

Thanks for your comments. I have looked up the sites you gave and now realise that we have the product (Freeview) however we are not able to utilise its benefits because of the transmitter(s). From the sites it seems pointless to buy a rooftop wideband aerial as it would not fully rectify the problem.

Next time I buy a car I must remember and enquire if I can get out of it what the manufacturer/adverts claim or am I merely paying for future potential.

It has also got me thinking if the BBC, who advertise Freeview and whom all of us are funding, are in breach of the Advertising Code by not stating that 'Although you can have it, you may not be able to receive it, but hey, why don't you buy it anyway.' Perhaps not, otherwise I am sure it would have been picked up before.

Thanks again for your assistance. Much appreciated.

Brian, as always thank you for your interest.

Perhaps I am being a little harsh and shortsighted in my comments, however they were made after reading the e-mails on this and the'Waltham'link.

I am sure there are many people throughout the UK who enjoy a full analogue & digital signal 24/7, as a result of which, they receive the full 'Freeview' experience. However for some reason it would appear that a number of people in the East Midlands, served by whichever transmitter, do not, particularly for all ITV & '4' stations. If this is the case, why are these problems not highlighted when the product is advertised?

My point was simply, what benefit is there in spending more money on a wideband aerial that may/may not provide a satisfactory signal for both analogue & digital pictures on a 24/7 basis for all stations? Unless you are sure, from the information you have, that a wideband aerial using Waltham will meet this criteria I think I will wait for the changeover?

Thanks again for the time you have taken in responding to my questions.

Natasha: There is no need to do this in the UK. If you want to get the Freeview channels you need to use a DVB-T reciever. If you card already has it you need to select DIGITAL TELEVISION when setting up the card. If you card doesn't have it, you need to buy one (or, even better, two).

Hi there can you help? we've had freeview for quiet a while now and never had any problems in getting any of the channels until yesterday when the all the ITV1,2&3 channels disappeared and have still not returned. I've tried retuning the box (3 months old) but to no avail. I live south of Sheffield (Hoyland,Barnsley)and never had these problems before and wonder if there are there any problems with the broadcasting service that could have affected this?

We live in North Chesterfield and have been receiving ALL channels from the Sheffield Transmitter perfectly, until today, when all of a sudden everything dissappeared and signal strength dropped to about 12% and quality to zero.

Have also noted this on another tv with another aerial directed at Sheffield, is this some kind of fault?

I recently had a new TV aerieal installed, which the installers pointed towards the Sheffield transmitter. i live at S2 3HL. My old aerial points at Elmley Moor and I was able to get reasonable reception most of the time. I often have problems with lack of reception/'bad signal' now and today have no signal/bad signal on the group that includes ITV and ITV3. There are no problems reported with the Sheffield transmitter - so what causes these issues? It is raining...

I live in S10 and the BBC1/2 multiplex (Ch39 currently) is yo-yoing between 40% and 100% quality, 60% strength, at just 1 mile line of sight from the transmitter. Picture and sound constantly break up.

ITV1 is fine at 100% quality! Why do these guys keep pratting about with our signal?

Sorry about the mixup with C39, I misread the list! :-(

So what has changed then? Suddenly we have a poor signal on one multiplex, is that possible? I have shielded cables everywhere, also this happens on 2 TVs. Tom is missing the ITV multiplex and I am missing BBC1. Briantist, I am in S10 3QP, and that hasn't changed!

Hi,

I kicked this latest thread off last week when I lost CH53 (ITV, More4 etc). It is still not working for me in the S10 4GJ area depsite trying 3 different freeview boxes.

Reluctantly I will be giving Murdoch my money and switching to sky/freesat if it cannot be resolved. Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

I removed all possible sources of interference to the aerial cable which had no effect. I then invested in a plug-in signal booster and this has seemingly resolved the issue although there is still some audio break up on CH53. However At least it is watchable.

Thursday 4 October 2007 12:39PM Sheffield
No such luck in S10 3QP! The BBC reception is still truly awful! Signal boosters just result in even bigger yoyos in quality or no signal at all, whereas they worked fine previously. (On BBC1 etc) Your idea that Belmont may be the problem is interesting, but what do I do about it???
Briantist
Thursday 4 October 2007 2:51PM
Mike: Boosters are not usually helpful for Freeview reception - apart from "masthead amplifiers". See www.ukfree.tv link icon Do I need to buy a booster? | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV and switchover advice - the Belmost transmitter will be a problem if you have two aerials or you get stray reception from there though your boosters.
Mike
Thursday 4 October 2007 7:55PM Sheffield

Also, who do we report problems like this to??? And why is the BBCmux signal suppenly so low?

I live in Chesterfield and have been getting good reception from the Sheffield transmitter, however, MUX A i am now only receiving intermitantly. Does anyone know if work is being carried out on the transmitter.

Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
