David Pound: Its simply because that the tuner fitted in HD Ready TV's is only capable of receiving DVB-T coded transmissions and doesn't recognise anything other than type of signal, whereas tuners in genuine HD receivers are capable of recognising DVB-T2 transmissions as well as DVB-T, the "T2" being the thing that differentiates between the two.

I, right from the start, have always disagreed with trading standards allowing "HD Ready" to be used on TV's that can only display a Hi-def image via an external source as this misleading statement was guaranteed to cause problems, which of course it did at the time and still does.

By the way, its because that a DVB-T2 transmission is in effect invisible to a DVB-T tuner that a "no signal" indication is always seen on any attempt to manually tune in an HD mux.

Thank you jb38. That answers my questions perfectly - and confirms that I bought a pup! Unfortunately too long ago to do anything about it now. And I quite agree with you that most sensible people (which obviously doesn't include Trading Standards) would regard this as a breach of the Trades Description Act. But Hey, we're only the customers!

Anyone else in the Erdington area lost multiplex 2 (ITV1 Channel4, Channel5..) recently ?
Suddenly found reception was poor on these the other night - have retuned TV (built in Freeview) and they have now disappeared completely.....

MJ: As you are located at only about 5 miles away from the transmitter you have always to beware of the fact that your TV could be receiving a signal that on the verges of being excessively high and that the ITV mux could actually have peaked over it, so try a test by taking the aerial out and using a short piece of wire (about 12") pushed into the inner part of the aerial socket and then carry out another re-tune on the TV giving an update on results, as if it works OK then you will have to insert an attenuator in line with the aerial socket.

Until yesterday we were able to watch,in another room, whichever sky program was on the main tv using a tuned in analogue channel. This has now stopped and all that appears on the screen is 'no signal'.All the tvs have freeview built in. What is the problem?
jb38
Sunday 20 May 2012 11:28PM
Steve: Are you sure that the TV concerned hasn't been left on its Freeview mode (DVB) rather than analogue? However if this doesn't apply then can Freeview be received on these remote TV's? that is "if" you are feeding the Freeview signal into the Sky boxes aerial input and its passing through the box as well as picking up the analogue signal in the process, and if you are doing things this way then for a test remove the Sky boxes normal aerial input and see if Sky returns on the remote TV's, if it does then you will have to try a few tests using a different RF1/2 output channel on the Sky box and retuning the analogue TV's to pick it up again after every alteration.

We have lost our TV signal over the weekend. It went on Friday night, reappeared on Sunday night until mid morning Monday and was not there still this morning. This has happened for 3 weekends in the last 2 months, although the set up hasn't changed. The rooftop aerial plugs into a Hitachi Freeview+ box, which connects to the TV. The bedroom TV, which uses a set top aerial, has worked ok during this time. Postcode is B70 6EB.

CV22 6EY - roof areal

This week our freeview box has
Tuesday - failed to record morning programes
Wednesday - failed to record afternoon programmes
Tuesday evening - all programme recordings started 5-6 minutes behind the setting so missed start of progammes

I had reloaded the channels, reset the recorder default - and set to Sutton Coldfield transmitter specifically.

This is the 2nd/3rd time this has occured

Thanks, turns out it was the freeview+ box. Brought the bedroom tv down and connected that to the rooftop aerial and it worked fine. The set top aerial that worked fine for the bedroom tv did nothing for the downstairs tv, so took box back and got replacement and all fine now.

Hi there, My tv is only 5 yrs old but yesterday suddenly stopped working. It now tells me no signal. The set has built in free view. I have connected a free view box and the tv now works. Is it likely that I can get this repaired or am I stuck with a separate free view box? I know this sounds silly but my tv is wall mounted and I now have a thick cable trailing down the wall, I am 60 and live alone - so handy man available.

Lilian Mae: What model of TV are you referring to? and have you tried completely resetting the device? this usually accessed from the main menu, although if as aforementioned the model is given then this can be checked on.

Just a small point though, have you double checked to make sure that the TV's hasnt been accidentally switched onto analogue?

The other point being, that its necessary to have knowledge of your location (post code or one from nearby) so that the signals expected at your location can be assessed.

Hi i am not happy about the signal quality from the sutton coldfield transmitter today.
I know you have to do work on it but what a week to do this, The picture was breaking up all day long.
I am looking after my mother who is 86 years old and she was looking forward to watching the jubilee celebrations, i know work has to be done but i thought you may have given some warning about this.

Sorry for taking so long to get back on here.. work and family stuff.
Have tried your wire suggestion and an internal digital aerial, and while channels on mux 2 do appear on the TV the signal is so weak I am getting either no picture or complete pixelation of sound and image.
This puts out TV receptionving back (approx) 3 yrs when they started "upgrading" the then prefectly good reception from Sutton Coldfield.
We lost mux 2 then as now.

I'm sick and tired of getting poor reception with digital TV. Never had any problems with analogue, but since we've gone digital, we've suffered regular reception problems with MUX2.

I thought the recent total lack of signal on our main living room TV was due to work being undertaken on the Sutton Coldfield transmitter (we completely lost MUX2 signal nearly all day Monday). However, it now says there is no work being carried out and no faults... but we still keep losing reception on all channels on MUX2.

While this does not seem to be such a problem with the portable TVs in our bedrooms, even those pictures tend to stop and stutter on MUX2.

Had to watch the England match on a bloody 14" screen. Very dissatisfied with digital in general and the quality of MUX2 in particular.

And how bad is it that we are never told about work being carried out. You think the very least they could do would be to inform us about it via our TVs so we don't all start suspecting our equipment, looking for faults that don't exist - or worse still buying new aerials or equipment.

Farrah Day: I looked back at your previous postings to find that you are in Nuneaton and that The Wrekin is within a few degrees of Sutton Coldfield.

Have you confirmed that BBC One is tuned to Sutton Coldfield on C43 and not The Wrekin on C26? Likewise ITV1 should be C46 and not C23. HD services are C40 and not C30.

If you find that any of these are tuned to The Wrekin, run the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged for the first 30% of the scan.

Wednesday 13 June 2012 1:14PM
Would you believe it, Dave! Though BBC was good at C43, ITV was indeed tuned to C23. Did what you said and this time it automacially tuned to C43, so hopefully things are going to be better from now on. Signal strength and quality now both 100%, whereas before the quality was constantly fluctuating between 20 - 60%.

It never occurred to me that I had somehow tuned to a weaker signal on certain channels, because of cause it's all automatic. I guess the whole of MUX2 was coming from Wrekin.

All this time and suffering and it was such a simple fix!

Thanks again, Dave.

For more than a week now HD signal levels have been unaceptable.
ranging between 58% and 64% WITH a 21dB amp
causing random break ups.

This is just ridiculous.

I'm starting to think we need to get a petition going to get the analogue service switched back on. At least it was vaguely reliable EVEN in bad weather.

Enough with the idiotic proliferation of so called "channels" with "new" series that were
broadcast 3 years ago on a different frequency.

This whole freeview service is becoming a sick joke.

As for C4 and its most "talked about" programs channel. I cant think of anything on C4 I'd want to watch in the first place much less talk about or want to watch again.

Once upon a time TV was about programs. You switched it on and watched.

Now you have to be an aerial rigger just to almost get a picture depending on whether there is an r in the month.

My MP needs to pull his finger out I'm thinking.

Today not even been able to switch get AV list up. Message says 'no channel found. Please check aerial or local signal availability. My antenna serves a block of flats. It is directed at the Leamington Spa transmitter. I understand that this transmitter only delivers a 'light' service. Is this the reason why I only receive a small range of Freeview programmes? Should the antenna be turned towards either the Lark Stoke transmitter, or the one at Sutton Coldfield?
Dave Lindsay
Thursday 28 June 2012 12:13PM
IPG Derwent: This is correct.

Unfortunately the UK now has a two-tier terrestrial transmitter network. It is likely that viewers will wish to receive from full service transmitters where possible.

Leamington Spa transmitter only carries the Public Service channels because the Commercial broadcasters don't wish to invest in it.

Looking on Streetview, there are buildings on the other side of Coventry Road receiving from Sutton Coldfield, and these are as high as yours, so it may be a possibility.

Obstructions such as buildings and trees can cause difficulty with reception. However, your chances could be increased by virtue of the fact that you are in a two-storey building.

Some aerials, particularly those installed in the days of four-channel analogue, only work with certain bands of frequencies (those frequencies that the designated transmitter uses/used). Should this be the case then a Leamington Spa aerial won't be suitable for Sutton Coldfield. If it is a wideband, then it will be suitable.

Recepion from Lark Stone would appear extremely unlikely, according to the Digital UK predictor.

I suppose that it will probably be down to your landlord to do something.

Steve F: Check that you are tuned Sutton Coldfield for BBC, and not The Wrekin. Do this by bringing up the signal strength screen whilst on BBC One. It should say C43 for Sutton Coldfield and not C26 which is The Wrekin.

If you find that you are tuned to The Wrekin, run the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged for the first 30% to miss out scanning of The Wrekin's channels.

If it is tuned to Sutton Coldfield, then maybe it is the signal level which is verging on being excessive. See www.ukfree.tv link icon Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

Question, for about the last week when I watch TV late at night (after Midnight) the picture pixelates and the signal and bit error rate goes up and down making it unwatchable. This only happens at night. Do they turn the transmitter down at night? Also it works fine in the day and all connections are sound. From my roof where the digital aerial is you can see the Sutton Transmitter. Any ideas?

@Kim & @Sam, as above, we have had a poor signal for probably two weeks or so. Actually, thinking about it, last night I gave up with TV and put the radio on.

@Sam, we had a similar problem many years ago, we checked for local interferrence for 2 miles and there was no consitent identifiable source.
It was interesting how you could state the times the channels would stop and start.
Sorry, not much help, but at least you know others have had the same problem.

Today COM4 SDN in north Coventry is almost non existent. All 5 other banks of channels are working okay.
ITV (the broadcaster in central Birmingham) says ."... there is no problem with the transmitter as they are watching it with out problem, and no one has reported a problem.", dispite my neigbour having reported it!
They also said there had been no signal problems in the past few weeks, otherwise they would have been inundated with calls.".
The ITV 'boss' on duty suggestion is "get your areal testd and fixed on Monday or local interference", he is an idiot! Two houses, different aerials, same problem, same time, so NOT aerial fault!
Question -
Are there different 'transmission aerials' at Sutton Coldfield for transmissions going to 'central Birmingham' and the transmisions going to 'north Coventry' ?
Thanks

Living in Stafford, I think we're pointed at Sutton Coldfield, Aerial in the roof and using a aeriel booster.

Just changed my PVR from a Humax 9200 to a Humax HDR Fox-T2. Working fine except for the COM4 SDN multiplex (Channel 41 ?) which is very flakey indeed. Never had this problem with the old Hummy. Is it likely to be different tolerances on the tuner ? I know we should probably pay to put the aerial outside but i could do without the expense.... any thoughts ?

Rich Booth: Sutton Coldfields SDN transmitter operates on Mux Ch42, Ch41 is from The Wrekin and which is indicated as providing an inferior level of reception.

If you carry out a retune and this happens again then you might have to carry out a Manual tune on each of the muxes one at a time to overcome this problem, the mux channels used by Sutton Coldfield being /

43)BBC) - 46(ITV) - 40(HD) - 42(ITV3) - 45(Pick TV etc) - 39(Yesterday etc).

Thursday 11 October 2012 11:55PM
Geoff: Either reset your TV by carrying out a factory reset (sometimes called default setting or position ) or remove the aerial and then carry out an auto-tune as this will blank out the tuners memory store, then once complete reconnect the aerial and go into your TV or boxes tuning menu / manual tune and enter the mux channels one at a time as shown in the link, storing same once scan is complete.

Ch62(BBC) - Ch59(ITV) - Ch54(HD if used) - Ch58(10-ITV3 etc) - Ch61(ArqA / 11-Pick TV / 82-Sky news) - Ch55(ArqB / 15-Film4 / 19-Yesterday).

You state above that 1956 saw the inception of this transmitter, but in fact BBC TV was first broadcast just before Christmas in 1949. I remember as a very small boy seeing the first night of it on a 15" HMV set with a figured walnut cabinet and doors at the house of the very wealthy parents of a schoolfriend in Higher Bebington, Wirral, not far from today's Storeton transmitter... we were all spellbound, and went outside to look at the aerial to see if it might be glowing!
