Machynlleth We spend time cruising the canals of England. Currently the boat has an omnidirectional aerial on the metal roof of the canal boat that tends to give a poor analogue signal if one is lucky! I feel we will need to change to a wide band directional aerial on a mast that will have to be set up each evening as we moor the canal boat. What mast height would be advisable and what are the pros and cons regarding Log periodic versus Yagi arrays?
Is there any way I can find the nearest/best transmitter other than one of the wideband signal locators. Can the grid coordinates (as shown on a satnav) be entered to a site to predict signal?
TIA
MartinMartin Brett: Give me a few days to sort out finishing it off, and you will be able to use national grid or latlong to get a prediction.

Machynlleth Thanks Briatist, that will be very helpful. Any views on log periodic versus Yagi? I feel that as the array will need to be stored whilst not in use the log periodic may be a more convenient shape. The predictions tend to be based on 10 metres above ground level but this is not really practical or feasible to erect on a regular basis. I suppose the metal roof (50ft x 7ft) will be a massive ground plane. Is that going to effect the array?
MartinMartin Brett: You should use whatever aerial you find best.
The metal roof isn't a problem as long as the aerial is at least 1 meter above it.

Machynlleth I am well in the green area on the map for Corris transmitter at a position that is almost directly south of the relay and has Blaen Plwyf almost perfectly behind the vertically polarised aerial on my roof which is pointed at the Corris relay. As there is only the so called freeview lite available from the Corris relay and I can just detect a very poor signal at channels 24 & 28 I thought I would try a group A (Horizontal) pointed directly at Blaen Plwyf. At the same height as the current group B. The signals I could get were just as poor (unwatchable) using the horizontally polarized group A until I got up to the two Corris channels where these were only slightly worse than on the vertical aerial pointed at the Corris relay so the green area south of the Corris relay is definitely not served by stronger signals from other transmitters unless Preselli is the source. As Corris needs group B and I believe Preselli is also group B is it likely that pointing to Preselli would be worth a try? I am willing to do almost anything to get more than the lousy selection of programs on freeview light. Preselli is quite a long way off whereas I can clearly see the Corris relay.
Regards,
MartinMartin: The first thing to consider is that Freesat is quite a lot easier (and cheaper) to install than a complicated Freeview system.
Looking at your position, the problem for you is not the group of your aerial, but how far down you are located.
To stand a reasonable chance of good Freeview reception from one of the non-local transmitters, you will need as long an aerial pole as you can use.
And even then you might be frustrated. Freesat+HD would be a better choice if you want more channels. Martin BrettWednesday 29 September 2010 9:01PM
Machynlleth Who makes the decision as to what channels are on a mux? I have two total rubbish channels (Rabbit and Gay Rabbit) and two time shifted channels (ITV2+1 and Ch4+1) in my freeview lite from Corris. If these were relocated to one of the other muxes then I could have worthwhile channels such as ITV3, ITV4, Film4 etc.
I have fsfs but Murdock frequently knocks off a channel here and a channel there with the caption "your viewing card needs replacing" meaning he wants more money so I would dearly like to dump sky. I suppose I'll have to buy a freesat box. Any suggestions as to the best makes and guide prices?
Thanks,
