Our LG digital television bought 31st Dec 08 has been perfect until last week when the picture began to break up and we lost channels 4and 5. We reset it without success. The chap at Curry's told us about the Bilsdale Mast but as our insurance runs out at the end of the month we would like some reassurance that all will be restored.

I live in Thornaby and cannot get all the channels for my portable TV (upstairs) using a freeview box and digital aerial. I am now using an SLX gold digitop powered aerial which gives more channles that any of the others I have tried. But I still cannot get ITV,4,5,BBC4, Fim4 to name but a few. Bearing in mind that a portable sets needs a portable aerial to go with it, can I expect it to start working when the analogue signal is switched off in 2012?
Briantist
Saturday 23 January 2010 4:31PM
Keith: No, Freeview power output levels are designed for rooftop, not portable reception. It might work, but the system is not designed to work with indoor aerials.

my mother lives in Harrogate at postcode HG1 5SP and can only get about 4 BBC channels on Freeview. I have added a booster to her aerial, this gives better picture quality on existing Digital channels BUT no further channels.
What can be done to get more Freeview channels ?
Briantist
Monday 22 February 2010 9:29AM
alan chan: Leaving aside the impossibility of the booster making the digital pictures better, you are in a poor Freeview reception area.

A new rooftop aerial will probably be able to provide the full service, but Freesat might be a cheaper option.

Today, 15th May, I am still getting a poor signal to noise ratio on bbc 1, 2 and other bbc channels, despite the engineering work being finished. Any idea why? My postcode is TS7 8QS.
Also, why are the muxes which transmit the main channels that people watch on lower power than the minority channels? It seems crazy to me.
Briantist
Monday 15 March 2010 5:06PM
Ian Taylor: I think it's March actually. What on earth do you mean by "a poor signal to noise ratio", how are you measuring this on a COFDM service?

Some multiplex operators decided to have more channels on lower power.

Sorry about the wrong date!!
I am using DigiTV HW and SW on my PC and this system gives a reading called SNR which I assume means signal to noise ratio. Anyway, whenever this is lower than about 14% I get picture breakup.
I have now solved my problem, which turned out to be caused by my aerial cable having been moved too close to a main's wire.
Thanks for your help.

Steve Watson: Mux D is out-of-group for a Group A aerial. It will always be prone to dropping out because the aerial is *designed* to drop frequencies above C40. To make matters worse, it's on lower power than the rest.

Pontop Pike is actually closer to you but there's a big hill in the way, so it's not a great option.

After switchover, all three commercial muxes will be out of group, so you might want to consider getting a Group K or wideband aerial now. (Group K nominally finishes at C48 but the aerial response is typically good right up to C53.)

DigitalUK's transmitter network engineering activities page for 2010 shows that some antenna work will be happening this year, but I imagine that was covered in February-April (see 'Transmitter engineering' posts above'). Or not. It would be nice if DUK would give more detail.

I live in Darlington (DL3 9PH). When can I receive Freeview HD from Bilsdale? Will I need a special type of aerial and HD set-top box. I already have a HD ready TV with built in Freeview receiver. Will I need to bypass the built in Freeview receiver with the HD Freeview set-top box?
Briantist
Monday 17 May 2010 11:29AM
Clive Durham: Sometime around September 2012.

You will need a Freeview HD box (or TV), but no special aerial is required.

A Freeview HD box would attach to your aerial and connect to the TV using an HDMI cable.

My mother lives in Harrogate (HG2 0NT) in a block of flats. Analogue reception is OK. Freeview reception is OK for BBC1, BBC2 and a few others but very low signal for ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 (unwatchable). Pretty sure she is on Bildale (North East news etc.) Flats are 5 floors, so aerial must be pretty high. Because of the communal flats situation it's not easy to check the aerial etc. She is happy with analogue until the switchover (for ever if it were possible) and doesn't want the expense of installing Freesat which is currently being offered. Am I right in thinking that at switchover the power of the Freeview transmission will be increased significantly and is this increase likely to make Freeview OK for her?
Briantist
Friday 21 May 2010 1:22PM
Graham: Yes, if you can't get Freeview from Bisdale right now from Harrogate, you will after switchover.

As she has the stronger channels, then the power increase (14 times) at switchover will get the rest without any problems.

Hi there. We live in York. Today we changed our aerial direction to Bilsdale as the reception from the Yorkshire transmitters are screened by some huge trees. what really annoys me about freeview is the serious lack of channels since the retune and prior 2 retune there has been a gradual loss of channels we cant recieve half the proposed channels and the signal strengh is worse with traffic why cant freeview retune itself there are no software updates for this platform maybe i am expecting too much from this service but i suppose its better than analoge

Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
