John Harrison: Although I might well be wrong but I doubt if it will, has this interference that you refer to only started recently? although if the distribution amplifier is only that and is not supplying power to a mast head amplifier then you should try a test by unplugging the distribution amplifier then removing the aerial input to it and coupling it directly onto the feed that goes to one of your TV's, then have a check what happens on that TV at the times that you know that the problem occurs.

The reason for suggesting this is that the test will indicate if the problem is with the aerial or the distribution amp.

jb38 thanks for your reply. The aerial is a relatively new 18 element Yagi group B model through a group B filter feeding the distribution amp with CT100 cable. Also connected to the amp is a 3 element DAB yagi facing the Waltham TX. Have tried connecting the main TV directly to the aerial feed and this does not help. On the TV, the signal remains at 100% but the quality drops to around 20%

John Harrison: If the problem still occurred when the aerial was fed directly into your TV then I cant really see that much you can do as the source of the interference "might" well connected to the circuitry associated with your solar panels, and especially so "if" the inverter is also located in the loft space.

As things are, the only option I see is for you to make a couple of local enquiries for the purpose of determining whether or not the problem is confined solely to your own household, because if it is then I cant see the situation being improved any except by moving the aerial to another position.

However there is one simple little test that you could make though, that being to take a small portable radio of the type that has a LW band up into the loft and tune it to a dead spot either side of Radio 4 LW 198Khz, as you only want a background noise and not a programme, then turn the volume up slightly before the times that you know the problem occurs and monitor the output of the radio, because if the problem is connected to the solar panel installation this will likely result in you hearing a loud noise through the radio, LW being great for detecting sources of interference.

By the way a radio with MW can also be used if tuned "off" a programme, its just that LW is better for this sort of test. The other point being to position the radio near to the solar panel equipment.

PSB2 D3+4. I am unable to watch anything. (nothing has changed) It keeps saying no signal... This is same with free view up stairs in bedroom. This has been happening since yesterday

i am getting picture freeze ect all the time in the last few days. so i have done a new search but its the same. but going on to signal strength its showing a weak pick up, but says its coming from east yorks lincs , is there a problem with emley thanks

ian cherrington: can your tv do a manual tune ?if so auto tune the tv without the aerial feed connected then, reconnect the aerial and manual tune the channels/ frequency 44/ 47/ 48/ 51/ 52.
also if your tv does an auto update in standy mode, this may need turning off as it may revert back to belmont overnight

Have stopped the interference every three hours. I found some lead in the garage and have encased the solar panel meter with it. Just waiting for them to ring me to say there is a fault and they cannot get any readings. I know it is a bit drastic, but I have contacted them several times about it, only to be told a senior electrician will call me, but they never do.

John: make sure your coax leads don't run near the part with the SIM card , try to encase the amp with the lead but make sure there is enough room for air to keep it cool or use a fine wire mesh around the amp to act like a faraday cage. One final thing does the amp and anything on the solar system share the same ring main circuit if it does try a long extension lead from a different circuit only do one of these things at any one time in case one works.

john charlesworth: I would try carrying out a "factory reset" on your TV, this also called "default setting" or "first time installation" or some similar name dependant on equipment being used as there is no reason for not receiving ITV from Emley at that distance from the station.

By the way, if you are using any form of booster in line then try bypassing it.

We are in a direct line from Great Houghton, Barnsley to Emely Moor. Plans are to be submitted to construct 3 large wind turbines in between us it seems (after looking at proposed plans) and the Emely Moor transmitter. Would it have any effect for us?.

B Foster: Obviously there can be no definite answer to such a question.

However it is the case that the blades affect the signal. It stands to reason that any 'affected' signal will be changing.

If it were light coming from the transmitter then there may reflections from the blades which move as the blades move. I should imagine that this is similar to what happens to TV signals.

richard caywood: Go into your TV or boxes manual tuning menu and enter Ch44 into the box but do NOT press search or scan, as the signal level being received from Emley Moor's PSB2 should be seen on the strength / quality bar.

Further advice dependant on findings.

richard caywood: Looking on Streetview (photos taken August 2012) I can only see one aerial pointing to Emley Moor, which could indicate that it is not so good on your road. Some parts slope down, so what may and may not be possible may vary along its length.

From what I can see there are a few Belmont aerials and quite a few Beecroft Hill aerials.

The buildings in and around Elmfield Way appear as if the may be on higher ground and in the signal path. See and click link "view a map of area between SE251359 and SE222128":


Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

This higher ground would appear to be a brow over which you are trying to receive.

Has some building recently been built or is in the process of being built?
