Briantist: Thanks - the information about those two muxes broadcasting in 64QAM mode is helpful. Still does not explain why it really only started becoming a problem a week or so back.

Had a TV bloke round who advised of the problem.

Does seem a major disruption for an interminable amounbt of time - how long now - another 2 weeks by the look of it.

Sure my licence fee should cover 12 months uninterrupted vision of at least 4 or 5 channels. Cannot describe how we have watche d sooooooooooooooo many programmes - only for the signal to go kaput with the last 10 minutes to go - aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! SO frustrating.

Do we know when the work on the Emley Moor transmitter will be completed, i.e. when in June things will improve. I have now had a more or less unwatchable picture on ITV1, C4 and Five for the last week and am getting a bit fed up! I am having to watch on analogue at present, which I can no longer record.

Is there an end date in sight yet for these works? Can't say I've a lot of faith in people who don't even know 14th April was not a Monday.
I've had nothing but BBC1/2 on Freeview and analogue through a snowstorm since - Surely the ITV/C4/C5 etc advertisers can't be happy paying for adverts that aren't being broadcast

So when the work is finished will it just return to the previous service or might there be some improvement? Some of my channels were 'scrappy' at times as I'm right on the reception border and auto tuning is out as the box picks up weak channels from Bilsdale. Which six mux's should I be manually tuning to after the 14th?

Briantist: Hi, just to confirm that my Sky+ box was innocent and it appears that the current signal strength/quality from Emley Moor is responsible for my missing HD channels. I retuned my TV last week and it picked up the three channels without me changing anything, however the strength was sub 40% and the quality was poor. I'm hoping once works have been complete that the channels' signal will improve.

We live in North Leeds LS17 and have had absolutely no problems with reception until last night when our BT Vision reception on ITV1, CH4 and five has stopped working. We have tried re-scanning for the channels but this makes no difference. Our analogue reception has always been poor so now we are reduced to watching a very fuzzy ITV1. Please can you confirm if the works are affecting this and if so when will they be completed. The world cup games start on Friday on ITV1 and it would be particularly annoying if we cannot receive these. If you have anyone who actually plans your works then shouldn't someone have realised that the world cup was starting this week?

Very disappointed. I guess that means I don't get the World Cup in HD then, my signal strength/quality is still too poor. I feel frustrated as a delay of over 2 months (until the end of August) would surly have been known about before today, why wait until now to make this statement?

We are in York and originally had good digital reception. Recently the digital channels for BBC TV channels has been very broken and impossible to use. The Analogue signal is poor here anyway. ITV digital channels are much better. Have triggered a re-tune to no benefit. Can you confirm this problem WILL be resolved in due course ?

On 9th June Briantist posted to the effect that the work would be done before the start of the World Cup - didn't say which one though!!!!!

Has the mast fallen down between Wednesday and today? Or have the engineers made a bollox of the work so far? Another possibility is that they're a load of politicians so lying is quite normal to them. Come on,spill the beans, why has 2 months work now been stretched to over 4 months (and possibly longer)?

That is absolutely ridiculous!! Who do we complain to?? I've had virtually no channels since the work started, and am now having to watch the World Cup on my laptop off the BBC web site, cos I can't even get BBC1 or ITV1. It's a joke. Most days I can get Dave, BBC Parliament and occasionally CBeebies. Fabulous.

It's a good job I am not bothered about football. Has this just dawned on the bozos that are doing the work that with only a day or two to go they are not going to be finished leaving customers with no chance to get Sky or Virgin installed in time for the World Cup.
Whoever has been in charge of this project should be sacked immediately but as usual will no doubt just shrug their shoulders and not give a damn - beyond disgraceful

Conned again: Briantist doesn't work for any of the broadcasters, nor for Ofcom, nor for Arqiva (who run the transmitters), nor for any of the service companies.

Quite why he said it would be done before the start of the World Cup I don't know, because the last information I saw from Digital UK said the plan was to get it back in full service on 16 June. That clearly wasn't possible.

Arqiva are being frustratingly silent on the progress of work on the transmitters. I think we'd have been a lot better off if John Birt and John Major hadn't privatised the BBC and IBA (respectively) transmitter engineering departments, which now make up Arqiva. Unfortunately they're a private company owned by an Australian bank (Macquarie) so are not subject to Freedom of Information.

There may have been knock-on effects from the fact that someone reportedly left a tool in the new transmitting aerials at Oxford, which shorted them out and caught fire, destroying the new aerials beyond repair. It's possible that in hurrying up delivery of a replacement there - where the drop in height to the reserve aerial is extreme, severely reducing coverage - has delayed parts needed at Emley Moor.

I can't imagine it's a weather delay, though, which is what delayed Oxford for so long before they tried powering up to full. (They've been on reserve transmissions since February.)

Apologies all, the information I had been provided with said that they were intending for all engineering work to be done by yesterday.

I note with interest that the Digital UK update was posted late Friday afternoon.

It is a bit of change, going from complete in the next week to "the end of August".

Freesat HD is an excellent option.

Seeing as we are going to be without the BBC channels for 1 third of the year ( 4 months ) we should get a refund of 1 third of the license fee.

After all we pay the fee to the BBC for the BBC channels, if we can't watch them we should get a refund.

We are in York and previously had a good signal on our integrated freeview tv which we have had for 3 years. Now we can usually get BBC but with the occasional break and no signal at all. We are lucky to get 2 minutes in all ITV channels and oftern don't get 2 seconds, the screen is constantly pixelated!! Analogue is still a rubbish signal with snow in Africa! I was hoping to watch the world cup anytime now. What a joke. I want a refund of my licence and any petrol I use to go to a friends for a better signal or ny alcohol I have to by at a pub just to watch the matches!!!
