George: The two groups E and B overlap. The E/W is computed from the data, whereas B is the actual designated group.

I am on Rosemarkie. Today all anbalogue switched off. I have retuned my Freview HD TV and get all chennels OK. However looking at the three HD channels I see no difference to normal. They are marked as 1080i is this correct?
Briantist
Wednesday 20 October 2010 3:01PM
John: Which Freeview HD set do you have? Yes, the services run at 1080-lines.

You will see them as local channel numbers 50 BBC HD, 51 STV HD and 52 Channel 4 HD.

Not all programmes on STV and C4HD are in HD.
John

I have a Sony KDL40EX403. The signal strength on all 3 HD channels is showing as 98 with 100 quality. I have flicked between normal and HD and honestly can see no difference. Have just been watching the BBC HD preview but see no difference between that and normal broadcast.

Many thanks

John: The signal strength will have no effect on the picture quality at all. That was an analogue feature.

I don't think that any of the programmes currently on Channel 4 and STV are in HD, they will simply be "up-scaled" to HD for these channels.

You WILL notice the difference when these channels carry fast moving images, such as football matches where even upscaled SD programmes look much better.

BBC HD always broadcasts in full HD.

Thanks, I will compare BBC SD and BBC HD this evening when they have a simulcast. I would mention that I have been able to receive programs on the HD channels for some time, the programme info always indicated that they are in 1080i but I assumed that until today (20th) they would only appear in SD from Rosemarkie but I was surprised today that they appear no different. I assume that Rosemarkie is actually broadcasting in HD as scheduled for today and that there is not a tech problem preventing HD broadcasts.

Briantist
Wednesday 20 October 2010 5:11PM
John: You certainly have not been able to receive the HD channels before today.

Are you sure you are not just looking at the SD channels, which channels numbers are you suggesting were HD before?
John
Wednesday 20 October 2010 5:16PM Forres
50, 51 and 52 all indicated 1081i and this was from when I got new TV in June. Its all a mystery to me.

John: Rosemarkie did not have Freeview HD before today, I'm not sure where you could have got a signal from. Black Hill was the only transmitter with a pre-switchover service.
John
Wednesday 20 October 2010 5:35PM Forres
It would not have been Black Hill that is too far away. Although the channels had programms and the info said 1080i they were certainly in SD, I am not sure what channel they were on (I am sure that it was not 42). I assumed that they were test ransmission in SD getting ready for switchover today.

Wednesday 20 October 2010 10:12PM Forres
Thanks all, When I got the TV I autotuned it and the EPG gave 50/51 and 52 as HD. The picture certainly was not HD although the info said 1080i. I cannot be sure what channel they were on. Today after retuning they are on CH 42 and I have checked the frequency that is tuned in and it is 642mhz which is correct for Rosemarkie. The pictures are still certainly not HD, I have just switched between 1 and 50 while the Apprentice was on and there is no difference (except for a time lag) between them.
I am baffled.

John: I don't quite know what you are doing, I often switch between 1080- and 576- line viewing and the difference jumps out at you.

The picture has more detail, the motion is much better, the colours have greater depth and text has real clarity.

Advice.....one TV in my house wont pick up ITV channels after numerous channel searches. Can anyone advise please?
Mike Dimmick
Thursday 21 October 2010 6:44PM Reading
Liz Gilchrist: probably too much signal dropped in the cables by the time the cable reaches that TV. Was ITV1 snowy on that TV before switchover? Or any ghosting?

If you're getting the ArqB channels on C50 OK at that set, it's more likely that there's something else being picked up on C49 such as the RF output of a VCR, Sky box, or Freeview set-top box, but it is also possible that C49 just doesn't carry as well to your aerial as C50 does.

Is the affected TV the closest to the aerial, or the furthest away?

If you supply your postcode I can see how strong the signals are expected to be, and whether this multiplex is just weaker at your location, or if there might be a different problem.

Liz Gilchrist: OK, I can see that at your location, the Rosemarkie and Rumster Forest transmitters are roughly in the same direction. Can you check that the TV has actually tuned to channel 49, rather than trying to pick up channel 24 from Rumster Forest? If it has, you may find a reliable version of STV (etc) at number 800 or so in the programme guide.

Does anyone have any ideas why I can see the Rosemarkie transmitter, but can't get any signal? Called engineer out and he tested with his aerial but really, really low signal. IV7 8ES. Aerial on a pole outside. There are trees between us and the transmitter, but the top of the pole is higher than the trees.
Ian
Friday 13 May 2011 7:55PM Dingwall
Actually, looking at the map it may be Mount Eagle we are looking at.
Briantist
Friday 13 May 2011 8:08PM
Ian: Mount Eagle is a radio transmitter, not a TV transmitter.

You should have excellent service from Rosemarkie - perhaps you need to mount the aerial up higher to ensure you are 100% avoiding the trees.
Ian
Friday 13 May 2011 8:20PM Dingwall
That's why we called the engineer out - we wanted to get the aerial higher, just to make sure that we totally cleared the trees. But he said we wouldn't be able to get a signal.
Briantist
Friday 13 May 2011 8:28PM
Ian: I guess you will have to go for Freesat! www.ukfree.tv link icon All about Freesat | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .
Ian
Friday 13 May 2011 8:31PM Dingwall
Nope. We already have Sky and Freesat and the trees are blocking the signal to that as well. The satellite dish is pointing to the opposite direction to the aerial - so every way we loose. We can get some channels on satellite after dark and then loose them by 7.30am. The engineer did suggest just raising the dish, but if it's windy we already loose the signal so raising it higher will (I suspect) make matters worse.
Briantist
Saturday 14 May 2011 8:15AM
Ian: Basically any tree will "earth" the incoming transmissions, be they terrestrial or satellite, so you must avoid them.

If that means mounting a more industrial dish higher up, then that might be the only option, given you seem to be surrounded by trees.

Well, other than a chainsaw of course.
Ian
Sunday 15 May 2011 9:20AM Dingwall
Briantist: I suppose there's always BBC iplayer. Trees don't belong to us and landowner not interested in doing anything about it - so chainsaw not option. May have to resort to a 40ft pole. Thanks for your help.

We are getting all the available channels from the Rosemarkie transmitter but we do get some drop out.Do you thing this is just due to low signal strength .We cant get any form of satellite channel due to a large hill in the way.Is there any way of boosting the signal ?

Briantist

Richard: You are not officially in a coverage area.

I would have thought the best thing you can do to improve things is to raise your aerial up higher, as high as you possibly can.

I have no freeview channels, have tried a full rescan and manual scan to no avail. I have no carrier, displays no database. My aerial is in my loft but I have had freeview channels before so why is this happening now?
Any advice would be helpful. My tv is new but i had the same problem with my older one this week as well.

Monday 30 May 2011 12:53PM
Susie,
Not sure why your post is in the Rosemarkie transmitter section - South Ockendon would typically use the Crystal Palace transmitter.
If you've lost everything signal-wise with your loft aerial, there are a few things to check:
a) Aerial isn't pointing through neighbour's loft and they've just had foil-lined insulation installed (which would screen your signal).
b) The cable from the aerial is actually connected to something (you may have some form of distribution or splitter in the loft to feed other rooms). If its connected to an amplifier, is the amplifier switched on (or getting its power from somewhere)?
c) There's a possibility of a short-circuit at a coax plug (particularly the ones that use a small screw to hold the centre core of the cable).

Jim.
