I live at West Hougham, CT15 7AZ, (under the mast) and am getting the warning, after I have viewed channel 50 for half an hour or so, and the screen going all red with shadow figures moving around, that this channel is not available in my area and I should tune to channel 101/1. But i have just watched it. What is going on?

Monday 30 July 2012 8:22PM
Ian Fletcher: What model of TV or box are you seeing this indication on, and if you take the aerial out and use a short piece of wire (about 12") in the socket do you still see this indication, or do you maybe even receive a picture without the aerial?

This odd indication of an obviously false nature "might" be due to signal data corruption in your tuner due to it receiving an excessively high level of signal because of your relatively close proximity to the transmitter.

Ian Fletcher: Just to add that what's been said is based on the peculiar effect that you witnessed happening having occurred on more than one occasion, otherwise disregard as it could be purely a glitch caused by work going on at the station.

Irritating? Never had Freeview problems pre switchover. No probs 1st retune. Now after 2nd retune BBCA keeps dropping out on me. Several times in the first few days, now weeks apart, but BBC is my main view! I can delete channels, manually retune to another transmitter, and get the channels back, or wait and eventually the "no or bad signal" disappears and the channels return. I'm pointing at Dover, but I can pick up channels on Heathfield no problem.

What causes these intermittent break ups? Clear line of sight as far as I know. Could there be (very) local interference?
jb38
Friday 10 August 2012 4:00PM
Alan M: Its not so much local interference thats liable to be the cause of the problem, but more from some distant station that's being received purely through atmospheric conditions applying at the time, and it clashing with the BBCA mux.

Its unlikely that you can do much about this, but though when the reception is good carry out a signal strength / quality check and make a note of the results, then when the signal drops out carry out another test, as although the screen might be blank the signal will still be there but at a lower level, and if the lower level is "reasonably constant" then a variable gain booster could be the answer, as when the signal drops out you could lift the level back up again.

JB,

Many thanks, I will do that. I may be wrong but I seem to recall signal strength at the time popping around from 0 to 40/50 back again etc. What is the likely outcome in that scenario?
jb38
Friday 10 August 2012 4:29PM
Alan M: Well in that case I regret to say that unfortunately nothing really can be done, as symptoms like that are usually always the result of interference from afar or alternatively signal path obstructions caused by trees, although if it only really affects one particular channel then its more inclined to indicate interference from afar.

I would though still be interested in the results of a double signal check of the type mentioned.

Monday 13 August 2012 9:29AM
JB,

Reared its head again last night. It wobbled from 40-50, flashing very briefly to 80, then fell to 0 and stayed 0-10 for quite some time. When I tried BBCA again later, the quality was staying at 70-80. So, when it interference starts it is all over the place, but then stays static until the interference ends.

So a signal booster thingy is worth trying.

What I don't understand is that the in-laws next door have an indoor aerial pointing in the same direction and they never have a problem. We never had a problem until the final switchover date. And Dover is now massively more powerful!!!
