If you have any kind of Freeview fault, follow this Freeview reset procedure first.

Digital television services are broadcast on a multiplexes (or Mux) where many stations occupy a single broadcast frequency, as shown below. The rating shown takes in account the output power level and the various Freeview transmission modes and do not indicate an ongoing fault.

I know ofcom says that viewers need incentives to be encouraged to take up Freeview, but a good start would be to make it available to more people. Shrewton is not slated to get Freeview until March 2012, the same time that analogue is due to be turned off. Someone needs to wake up and do something sensible to the schedule.

Another step would be to ban the sale of TVs which have only analogue reception. With dual tuners, people can just switch over when Freeview comes along.

CDM: It is IMPOSSIBLE to provide more Freeview transmitter without switching off the existing analogue transmissions. The 80 transmitters that provide Freeview at the moment use the 'buffer' frequencies left between analogue transmitters. There are 3,300 tranmitters on 1074 masts to fit, and this takes time. Banning sets with analogue reception is more-or-less impossible as analogue is still used by 99% of the world's population.

There are already people in Shrewton receiving ALL Freeview channels. Most of Shrewton should be able to receive Freeview direct from Rowridge, Mendip, Salisbury or Hannington. My own Freeview is a mix of Rowridge and Mendip (the TV's own choice), all channels report 'excellent' signal quality (except during 'lift' conditions when everything from Rowridge stops, but then analogue is just as bad or worse).

RichardH: Yes, you should use the predictor to find out, as you have, that you often have a choice of transmitters.

Briantist: How is it impossible when Freeview and Analogue work alongside each other in other places... London for example? Also, I think you might have mis-read my suggestion to ban sale of TVs with ONLY Analogue reception, which now seems to have happened by itself. Shrewton is in a valley, so reception from distant transmitters is problematic for many people. That is probably why the Shrewton Transmitter exists. We do get the BBC mux from Mendip and sometimes some other channels are watchable.

CDM: There was only space in the frequency plan to squeeze in low-power digital signals at some sites, so the broadcasters selected the sites that would cover the largest part of the population. Unsurprisingly these were also the most established existing transmitters.

The issue was minimizing interference on the analogue channels at other sites caused by the digital transmissions at the main sites.

In addition, to keep the cost of installing and operating the relays down, they simply rebroadcast the signal from the main transmitter (or in some cases, from another relay further up the chain). In many cases the low-power digital signals simply would not have reached the relay transmitters with sufficient strength (relative to noise and interference) to rebroadcast them reliably. The sites traditionally regarded as analogue relays that do transmit digital before switchover, such as Salisbury, are fed via satellite.

We still don't know the final switchover dates for the Meridian region; I would imagine they would be announced in the middle of next year.

Excuse this if it sounds stupid....
Living in Shrewton, I got a digital aerial installed pointing at Mendip TX as this was ocnsidered stronger than Rowridge. With recent pixellations on some of the non-BBC. ITV main channels , do I now need Aerial re-alignement ?? to adapt to the Shrewton TX ?
Dave Lindsay
Thursday 1 March 2012 12:26PM
Le Rhyff: You would be best off sticking with Mendip unless you wish to change regional programming.

Two of Mendip's commercial multiplexes are on low power and will remain so until 28th March, these being Arq A and Arq B. According to Digital UK Tradeview, the former is lower than the latter.

See www.ukfree.tv link icon Freeview multiplexes | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice for services carried on the affected multiplexes.

Shrewton transmitter currently broadcasts only analogue TV and after switchover will only carry the Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) multiplexes and not the commercial (COM) ones.
