I'm writing on behalf of my sister who doesn't have access to a computer.
She recently bought a bedside radio with a CD player included, and discovered it also had DAB a radio facility. Where she lives she receives all FM transmit ions from the Stanton Moor transmitter, as far as I know this transmitter has no DAB service. I was hoping you could tell me when Stanton Moor was likely to be transmitting a DAB signal.
Her post code is DE4 2GN.

Many thanks R J Thompson.

My signals come from the Stanton Moor transmitter. Having enquired about BT vision, I've been informed that even after the switchover I will only be able to get around 14 channels, with almost 90 not available and that adjacent transmitters will be worse. Are there plans to upgrade the local transmitters?
Also what type of aerial do I need for this transmitter both now and after switchover? In particular does it need to be high gain, wideband etc.?
many thanks

Bob Carter: The commercial operators do not regard this transmitter as profitable, and refused the offer of frequencies. There won't be any more channels broadcast from here.

As above "After switchover an existing group C/D aerial will provide all digital TV services."

Hi Richard:
I believe BBC National DAB has launched at Stanton Moor in the last few days to serve areas in the Peaks such as Matlock and Bakewell as I have seen a press release, but can't confirm if it is on air yet. You may need to perform a station scan on your DAB radio to pick it up.

We have been away on holiday for a week and on return my mother's TV signal has deteriorated markedly. In addition the subtitles on which she relies as she is deaf are now complete gobbledy gook. She bought the TV three months ago and although the picture wasn't brilliant it was acceptable and we were told it would improve when we go digital. The TV has integral Freeview but at present she only receives four channels (we can't get Channel 5 in this area)through the analogue aerial. We rang Currys from where she purchased the TV and they guided us through retuning though I could have done this myself and the picture/subtitles did not improve. They then told us we would have to ring LG who would be able to help. Went through the same procedure with LG ie retuning though I told them we'd already done this. We were told there was nothing to be done as there was nothing wrong with the TV and that the reception had probably deteriorated because of work being done in preparation for digital switchover. The TV is now totally useless to my mother because of the lack of subtitles on which she totally relies and also because of the awful picture. Is there any solution to this problem or will she just have to do without TV until switchover?

Thursday 16 June 2011 10:49AM
Ann Tait: If analogue reception has deteriorated to the point that the text services no longer work it is doubtful if digital reception will be acceptable. Is it possible to check with a neighbour to see if they have good analogue reception? The Digital UK postcode checker predicts 100% reception for that postcode, so I would suggest having the aerial, cable and connectors checked. Are there any trees in leaf growing in the signal path? Also if there is any amplification on the aerial make sure the power supply is powered up.

Thanks for your reply. I live next door to my mother and have a very old TV in the bedroom which is receiving perfect analogue reception. The lady who lives in the flat above my mother has had no change in picture quality in the week we have been away. I don't understand why this problem should arise during a week in which she has not used the TV. It was perfectly acceptable when we left but on return the clock had reset itself to factory settings but as I have said previously retuning has made no difference to the problem. Who would I have to call in to check the aerial, cable and connectors as you suggest? There are no trees in the signal path. Unfortunately I don't know what you mean by making sure the power supply is powered up if there is any amplification on the aerial and in fact don't know how to tell whether if there is amplification on the aerial. As you have probably gathered I am not very knowledgeable in this area! Any further help would be appreciated as I just don't know what to do for the best as my mother is 89 and depends on her TV for entertainment.

Thursday 16 June 2011 3:37PM
Ann Tait: Is there only one aerial on the building, or is there an aerial for each flat?

Your mother's situation may be like mine, that there is one aerial, the aerial cable comes in to one flat and is then split via an active splitter between the TV in that flat, and a cable running to the other flat. (I rent a converted terrace.) If that's the case, ask the upstairs neighbour to check that the powered splitter is still plugged in, and that it's working.

Some powered splitter equipment automatically reverts to bypassing on the first socket if the power supply fails or is unplugged. If this equipment does this, the neighbour may still have excellent reception.

You're only 5km away from the transmitter and it's fairly powerful for a relay, so signal strengths could still be high enough to use a passive, unpowered splitter instead. They could be high enough to get a distinguishable, though not perfect, picture without the aerial.

If there is one aerial per flat, or the splitter is passive or a powered splitter is definitely working, check that all cables are properly connected and that the cable is making proper contact with the connector. If there is a separate aerial, ensure it is pointing in roughly the same direction as the other and that it appears to be intact.

Thanks for your reply. My mother has her own aerial. However there has been a development since my last post. I decided to disconnect the booster which had been fitted by a qualified engineer a couple of months ago and found that the picture quality increased to what it had been before we went away and the subtitles are now OK. The channels were all over the place - could only get a couple but after some manual retuning I managed to get everything back to normal. Still don't understand what happened but hopefully all is OK now. Could have saved myself almost two hours on the phone to Currys and LG who were no help at all. Thanks for your trouble.

Reading the posts for Darley Dale area I am disappointed to find that after a long wait we will only get a reduced service
To receive more channels would I have to get a satellite dish or just re-position my aerial?
Mike Dimmick
Tuesday 16 August 2011 4:31PM
Ann Tait: Note that Digital UK predict 100% reception on digital, *after* switchover. That would suggest very high signal levels, which I would expect at 3 miles from a relatively high-power relay.

Your switchover starts tonight - BBC Two analogue will disappear some time shortly after midnight. ITV1 analogue will move to BBC Two's frequency, so will appear on button 2 for the next two weeks. BBC digital services will start up some time during the day, expected to be by 6am but keep an eye on www.digitaluk.co.uk link icon Digital UK - Relay transmitter switching times .

On a TV with built-in digital tuner, you may have to press the Source button on the remote to switch between the BBC channels on digital, and ITV1 and Channel 4 on analogue. With an external set-top box or PVR, again you need to select the TV's SCART input to watch BBC digital channels. If your TV doesn't have a SCART socket, you will need a set-top box or PVR that puts its output on a spare RF channel (has an RF modulator), and tune a spare channel on the TV into the box's output.

The remaining analogue channels will be switched off after midnight on the 31st, i.e. in two weeks' time, and replaced by the remaining digital services.

Got didgital channels fine on TV and all BBC channels are great on my Panasonic DVD recorder but all the rest are breaking up and unwatchable.
I do have a signal booster in the loft and the aerial goes onto the DVD and then TV and its conncted by a HDMI cable as well.
Any suggestions please?

thanks for your suggestion - all the channels that I have problems with are on C62 the signal strength is 10 but the signal quality in my dvd recorder is in the red, whereas all the others are in the green.
(are you too young to remember that BT advert with Mauren Lipman?).
KMJ,Derby
Wednesday 31 August 2011 6:32PM
Dora: It is possible that the signal is now too strong and is overloading the tuner in the DVD recorder on C62.If possible try connecting the aerial direct to the DVD without a booster in line, otherwise insert an attenuator in the aerial feed before the DVD recorder.

Seem to have sorted it. Our TV is on a swival wall bracket and I had tuned the DVD recorder which sits on a shelve underneath, to digital while it was against the wall.

When I swival it out the signal quality comes into the green and against the wall its yellow then red, although it no londer seems to break up.

I assume its something to do with all the wiring being too close when the TV is back against the wall.

Dora: Pleased you found a solution to the problem. You might find that the position of the HDMI cable relative to the equipment or other cables affects reception.

Sorry I didn't acknowledge your post earlier Mike but have only just seen it. I retuned my mother's TV yesterday and everything so far is fine though she is disappointed to receive so few extra channels. She is 89 and watches TV quite a bit. We live in Darley Dale and have line-of-sight to the Stanton Moor transmitter. After change-over we seem to get all the DTV channels from Freeview Light *except* the HDTV channels. Have checked this on our two TVs, which are both HD-ready and have no problems with receiving Sky HD channels. Is Stanton Moor transmitting HD channels yet?
KMJ,Derby
Sunday 4 September 2011 4:38PM
D: Yes, Stanton Moor is transmitting the HD multiplex. To be able to receive Freeview HD you will need a Freeview HD box or a TV with an inbuilt tuner that supports DVB-T2. HD ready simply means that the TV is able to display an HD picture, when connected via an HDMI cable, to a suitable HD source such as a Blu-ray player or a Sky, Freesat or Freeview HD box.

We had a fire at electricity sub station last week and seem to be operating on reduced power - would this affect sound quality on HD stations?
Picture is great but every now and again the sound hiccups - rather like a microphone cutting off and missng a bit of a word.
Not doing it all the time though.
