Ramsbottom digital switchover schedule

Note: This is the only schedule for digital switchover. Digital services cannot be introduced before the dates listed for "testing purposes" as they will generally use the same transmission frequencies as the services they replace. Another alternative, available today, is Freesat.

Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 320 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 16 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for vertical polarization - the elements going from top to bottom.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

After switchover an existing group C/D aerial will provide all digital TV services.

When the transmitter in Ramsbottom is switched over to digital, is there any chance it can also be upgraded to relay the DAB radio signals from Winter Hill? (map)

JOANNE/Alison/Lee/matt: Digital UK reports no faults and sadly the BBC system - https://faq.external.bbc.co.uk/templates/bbcfaqs/emailstatic/interferencePage - isn't working.

If the services are not back now, can you report them to Broadcaster complaints details | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice ?

I believe the national cost of converting to digital is well under budget . There must be many areas like Ramsbottom where viewers have a very limited freeview service yet this website just says no services will be added . We all pay the same licence fee and this second class service is frankly unacceptable. Which body is responsible for providing the limited service and how do we go about lobbying for an improvement. Why are full list of channels not available on relay ?? (map)

Alan: The Digital Help Scheme has not yet spent its budget.

This money cannot be just given to ITV plc and Arqiva, that would constitute "state aid" for private companies.

The TV Licence pays for the BBC, all of which are broadcast.

If you want to get together the funding yourself, I would imagine Arqiva would probably provide you with a quote.

Alan: Because UKTV (BBC Worldwide and Virgin Media joint-venture: Yesterday, Dave, G.O.L.D), ITV plc (ITV3, ITV4), Channel 4 Television (Film 4, E4+1, 4Music), Sky (Virgin 1), and Channel 5 Television (FIVER, FIVE USA) don't want to. At the planning stage, they were asked whether they wanted to have their multiplexes included in the frequency allocations, and they indicated that they were not interested in broadcasting from the relay transmitters.

(In practice the multiplex operators, ITV plc under the guise of S4C Digital Networks [Mux SDN] and Crown Castle International/National Grid Wireless [now owned by Arqiva, Mux ArqA and ArqB], were asked. However, I'm sure their customers would have been consulted.)

Your licence fee only pays for the BBC's BBC-branded channels, which you already get all of. A small amount of it goes to help less-able viewers obtain and install viewing equipment - the Digital Help Scheme. The other channels are supported by advertising, or by subscription and advertising, and have had to pay their own switchover costs from this income.

The actual transmitter installation costs are running under budget as I understand it, but this simply means that Arqiva (Transmission dept) gets to keep the extra profit. It's not likely to cover the ongoing transmission costs of transmitting three extra multiplexes.

If you want to blame someone for this, blame John Birt for privatising the transmitting arm of the BBC (under pressure from the government to keep the license fee down, as of course competition and the private sector would reduce costs) and the Major government for privatising the IBA's transmitting arm. The competition hasn't materialised as the privatised BBC bit was bought by the privatised IBA bit, which had been bought by an Australian bank. (map)
