Notes

'Out of group' frequencies are marked with a star. Analogue power output 500,000 Watts, post switchover average digital multiplex output will be 57,056 Watts.

To receive signals from this transmitter, the aerial must be mounted for horizontal polarization - the elements going from left to right.

Before switchover, the public service broadcasting multiplexes were 1, 2 and B; afterwards they were first PSB1, 2 and 3 but now called BBCA, D3+4 and BBCB. The commercial multiplexes A, C and D had initial post-switchover names COM4, 5 and 6; now they are SDN, ArqA and ArqB. At switchover BBCA, ArqA and ArqB will switch from 16QAM to 64QAM mode transmission, so five multiplexes will transmit in the 64QAM (2/3) 8k mode. BBCB is used for Freeview HD (DVB-T2, 256QAM), and has a pre-switchover service on selected main transmitters.

After switchover an existing group C/D aerial will provide all digital TV services.

Hi,
Please could you tell me when Freeview HD starts on Winter Hill?
Also, if I have a HD Ready 1080p IDTV, do I need any extra equipment to receive these HD broadcasts?

Thanks. (map)

Stuart: It started last November, you need a Freeview HD box, please see Freeview HD boxes in the shops from next week | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV + switchover advice, since 2002 for some examples.

So do you mean that even if I have a 1080p HD Ready IDTV, that I still can't receive HD broadcasts and I have to plug in a Freeview HD Box into a Freeview HD Ready 1080p IDTV?

Can you buy Freeview 1080p HD Ready TV's that don't need an external Freeview box to receive and view Digital HD transmissions?

It sort of defeats the object of having a HD ready Freeview TV if you have to buy an external Freeview HD box to plug into your Freeview HD ready TV.

You shouls just be able to receive HD broadcasts on an HD ready TV without any external equipment.

Please explain this.

Thanks. (map)

Stuart- HD ready means you are required to connect an external appliance to the tv in order to receive HD. There is a contraction in your first paragraph.

You are able to purchase TV's with a Freeview HD(1080i only) built in(DVBT-2).

LutonFan: I suspect that in retrospect the marketing people should have settled for "HD Capable", rather than "HD Ready" to avoid the confusion, but marketing people are not the sort of people who can avoid an opportunity to imply you're getting more than you are.

Briantist- I agree entirely. 'HD compatible' would probably have been more precise, however, it doesn't have the same ring as 'HD ready'.

I confess because I have been aware of HD since its launch four odd years ago, I wrongly assume people understand the situation as I do. I can appreciate how the public find it confusing.

LutonFan: I suspect, having seen the lists of specs and stickers with every logo under the sun on each TV, that the public are quite entitled to feel confused. I do my best to help...

they make DVB-2 HD TV sets now ? but only put it in 1080i TV's thast yet one more crazy thing to add the long list.....

the only reason i came here originally was to find out the simple facts...
1: what freq do you put into your DVB-T USB card when using VLC's DVB DirectShow ? using 578000000 doesnt seem to work, anyone got any idea's please ?
somethign like this should be working apparently but it doesnt in windows....
" vlc dvb-t://frequency=578000000 :adapter=0:dvb-bandwidth=8 --programs=4171,4235 --sout #duplicate {dst=std{access=udp, mux=ts,dst=239.255.255.239,sap, name="BBC One", group="BBC"}, select="program=4171",dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=239.255.255.238, sap, name="BBC Two", group="BBC"}, select="program=4235"
"
and can we have a simple chart placed on the main page for this simple data many people need to reference without hunting through pages of potential links, something very obvious like DVB freqs to use for your PC card and winterhill etc...

david: Yes, DVB-T2 equipment is branded "Freeview HD". Of course you can use a Full HD Ready set with a Freeview HD box.

The values you require are all very clearly listed at the top of the Freeview on Winter Hill TV transmitter | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.

Enjoying some wonderful DXing this evening... BBC B mux coming in loud and clear, well i least i can't blame the Humax T2 box. Isn't propagation a wonderful thing!

If the ERP is the same 100kw What's the problem with the BBC B mux long term?... Propagation over a sea path or is the array got a skewed radiation pattern with several lovely deep nulls...
