I keep reading about a Luton transmitter for digital broadcast but no installer seems to know of it. Despite this Digital UK says that Luton is the "preferred transmitter" when our current recption is from Crystal Palace.
The old transmitter as I understand it will be switched off.
CAI just refer me to a recommended in staller and I cannot see anyhting on the BBC site Thanks for the Luton info but is this a NEW transmitter as the old one is only analogue as I understand it? If it is new where exactly is it situated as installers I have spoken to do not seem to know of it? Thanks again. Mike
Thanks for this. Luton is the preferred transmitter from 2011 to provide digital broadcast for Anglia television. Because there was no information on engineering works I was suspicious but from what you are saying than it is simply a case of converting the existing Luton transmitter.
We currently receive analogue broadcasts for London and Anglia regions depending on which block of the 4 one lives. Very confusing!
I guess we will have to provide for both but as the actual aerials are cheap that is no problem.
Thanks again for the information. I am unclear as to what it means when I am told that the "power" of the signal will increase dramatically after switchover and there for old aerials (particularly those >30 years old) will be unable to "handle" the "enhanced" signal. Is this a matter of increased gain? If so how much does this increase by and why is older cabling therefore unsuitable?
We have a need for 4 communal systems and have been quoted £17,000 for the work including the new cabling which does seem quite high.
Any advice (especially if it helps to reduce the cost!) is welcome. Thanks Perhaps I have't made myself clear. We have 4 blocks of flats with old wiring, amplifiers and aerials and hence obviously need to spend some money including the facility for DAB.
I have been told these old cables will not take the increased power "load" (is this amplitude?. That's helpful everyone so thanks to all. However the amplifiers, aerials, etc are old and poorly wired (taped together in some cases)and will need replacing anyway.
From what everyone is implying the cabling (the major cost I would think in the quote I have?) IS adequate. Digital UK claim that old cabling will not be able to handle the signal but you all seem to be saying that this is untrue so I will bring in a cable expert to get another view.
This would seem to be an industry created to make money for installers, broadcasters and related consultancies and to rip off consumers. I can email you the person's name direct but you can see this on the Digital UK site somewhere (though I will try to find the page).
Thanks for the link: I shall look at that shortly.
Your website has been very helpful in shattering all these myths.
I will say more in an email if you send me your address. Hi
Perhaps my email address has disappeared off the system?
