My mum lives in derby and is getting spsmodic reception of ITV4 and other channels in that multiplex. All other channels are fine. Does anyone know if this is a widespread problem?

HilSu : Looking the Channel One website it looks like they are ceasing transmission after 31 Jan

If you manage to connect your TV directly to the sat dish you will then be able to receive the Freesat channels including HD. You can also get channels which are not part of the Freesat branding (but not Sky)by tuning the "other" satellite channels. Did you know you can also attach a USB external disk drive and record to it via the TV tuner. That means you can record Freesat or Freeview channels for later viewing, however you can't record a freesat channel whilst simultaneously watching a Freeviw channel or vice versa.
David Luckman. I don't believe Sutton Coldfield will have any HD channels available until digital switchover in September. Andy comments above that there are HD transmissions from Lichfield, maybe the signal is not strong enough to reach you.

notts13: Assuming their TV uses an aerial, not satellite - I guess they could try buying a cheap set top box from Argos or somewhere and try that. It might be they would need a better aerial too but try the set top box first. They should also check which transmitter the aerial points towards. Its a bit odd that they've lost the analogue channels as switchover on the Dover transmitter is not due until 1 July 2012.

Rickety, when you say record from your TV do you mean you want your recorder to record a signal fed from the TV tuner ? You mention the recorder as being VCR. Is it a Panasonic VCR with Viera link ? If not I doubt you will be able to record as I believe it is Viera that enables the "output" of the signal to the recording device.

So if you want to record Freesat programmes yoiu probably need an external recorder.

There is one other option which is to buy an "external USB drive" such as a Seagate Freeagent GoFlex 250gb drive from Maplin £35. Check your TV manual to see if it has USB ports. If so then you can record to this device. HOWEVER, you can't watch a different channel at the same time.
Mike P : As you live in Cheltenham it may well be that the ITV you are now getting on Channel 3 IS ITV West.

If so, you'll find Midland ITV (Birmingham oriented) on channel 801
Briantist and Mike:

I think Ridge Hill is now using channel 22 and mostly other low channel numbers as of switchover last Thursday (20 April). Don't know if that signal would reach you.
I use a portable dish and free to air decoder in my caravan.

I can align the dish and get nearly all the channels available without great difficulty except for CBS Action. Why is that one channel so hard to position the dish for ?
Moray Christie - what decoder are you using ?

Barry Summerton : A question :-

Does your Sony DVD/VCR have a digital tuner in it ?

Barry. The Humax 9300 has a VCR scart socket so I'm assuming it is possible to "offload" recorded material to your Sony VCR via a scart connection. You could consider getting a cheap set top box to connect to the Sony in order to be able to record. If the Sony only has one scart socket you would need a set top box with an RF (aerial) output. Assuming that the Sony has an RF out your connection would be aerial to Humax to set-top to Sony to TV. If that doesn't work you would need an aerial splitter and then the connection would be aerial to splitter, one way to set-top box, other way to Humax and then from Humax to TV.
