I have lost ITV 3 on both Digital TVs and on one served by a set top box. Presumably this has something to do wih the Wenvoe change on the 27th, but why? What do i need to do to regain the channel

David: Do a factory reset to clear the channel list then scan for channels or enter the frequencies manually.Mux SDN which carries ITV3 changed frequency to C42+ on 27th April 2011.

I am in Bristol (BS16 5RY) and the signal strength of ITV3 moves between no signal and poor signal on Freeview. BBC1 is at full strength, so I am at a loss to know what I can do to resolve this.

My TV is a new SOny Bravia and generally an excellent product, but ITV3 which is one of my favourite channels is almost impossible to watch - why ?

ITV3 is transmitted from the main transmitters only and at a lower signal strength than the national channels.
BBC1 will be transmitted from all transmitters.
So you may be getting BBC1 from one of the thousand local transmitter and ITV3 from one of the 81 main transmitters.
You could try a bigger aerial pointing towards a main transmitter or get a FreeSat receiver and dish.

Robin Wilson: Thanks, you can receive all the Freeview channels from three transmitters: Winter Hill, The Wrekin and Moel y Parc.

If you don't have them your aerial may be pointing at the Sutton Coldfield transmitter, or possibly Bromsgrove or Lark Stoke.

E Welch: "The commercial multiplexes at Sandy Heath will remain on their pre-switchover channels and powers for a period after digital switchover. SDN will then temporarily move to channel 31 (at 20kW ERP) on 31 Aug 2011, before adopting its final allocation of channel 51 on 18th April 2012. Arqiva A will adopt its final allocation of channel 52 on 23 Nov 2011. Arqiva B will temporarily move to channel 67 (at 20kW ERP) at switchover and then it will adopt its final allocation of channel 48 on 14 Sept 2011."

Thanks for that Briantist. I'm not sure how much I understood, but I guess that means it'll be a while before the channels settle into their proper places so I need to hang on in there & do nothing for the moment? Very grateful for your help.

Since the analogue switchover, I've lost ITV3 on Freeview on both my Sony DVD Recorder and my Sony TV. Virgin Media cable is fine.

James: You are in a very strong overlap area between the Craigkelly and Black Hill transmitters, so there is a chance that your box could have decided to store a weak off-beam signal from the other transmitter when you retuned.

Check which transmitter your aerial points to - south-west for Black Hill, north-east for Craigkelly - and see Digital Region Overlap for some suggestions.

It's also worth checking that the signal levels aren't too high. If you have a booster or amplifier, you should remove it. Signal levels should be more than adequate without.

If you're using Craigkelly, and you never had a wideband aerial fitted, you will need one now as Multiplex A/SDN has moved from within the analogue group to outside it. This would apply if you couldn't get Multiplex C or D, or analogue Channel 5, before switchover.

A few boxes have problems if they pick up some multiplexes in 2k mode and others in 8k mode. Right now, all signals from Craigkelly are 8K mode, while all except the main BBC multiplex from Black Hill are in 2K mode. If you don't have BBC One, your box may not support 8K mode and, if so, will not pick anything up after Black Hill switches over tomorrow morning. As I say, some behave oddly with mixed modes so you could just try retuning after 6am on Wednesday, when everything will be in the same mode. You can find a list of some equipment that is known not to work at www.digitaluk.co.uk link icon http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/2kequipment .

A few boxes are still around that don't support the larger Network Information Table introduced in 2008, but this is only a problem after they are retuned. If you hadn't retuned it since then, before this switchover began, you might not have encountered this problem before. You can find a list at www.digitaluk.co.uk link icon http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/splitnit .

There are also some TVs and boxes that can't handle the number of channels now transmitted. I don't know of a list of these, unfortunately.

Craigkelly did not use the new frequency for Mux A/SDN before, so if you're using a communal shared aerial you might need to get the landlord to get the system adjusted. You might also have to look for any equipment that has an RF modulator, such as an old VCR, games console or Sky box, and check it isn't using C45.

Ken Clark: In Aberdeen, she is likely to be using the Durris transmitter, where the second stage only resulted in the Public Service multiplexes moving to their final channel. The Commercial multiplexes had to stay on their old channels at reduced power. With Craigkelly having completed switchover, the commercial channels at Durris could move onto their final frequencies and power levels, which happened last Wednesday morning (15 June).

To get ITV3, which is carried on a commercial multiplex, back, you will need to retune the equipment in the same way as the other switchover stages.

Tuesday 21 June 2011 4:13PM
James McEwan: See my earlier reply to James from Falkirk! I can't do a detailed prediction, because you haven't provided a full postcode.

There is a relay transmitter at Canongate, to the north-west of Holyrood Park, which may indicate that signals from Craigkelly are poor in this area. Signals are aimed to the north-east of the transmitter, i.e. north of the park, on horizontal polarization, and to the west and the south on vertical polarization. Craigkelly is the other side of the Firth, above Burntisland.

Sometimes signal levels from the main transmitters are improved further than you would expect from the change in published levels, because the new main aerial is that much higher or has a different radiation pattern from the old digital aerial, so check for high levels. That said, both the old aerials - main and digital - were replaced by October 2010.

Mike, thanks! Today ITV3 appeared on both my Freeview devices, so I'm again able to view a lot of my favourite stuff.
The reason why I really missed ITV3 on my DVD recorder is that I can bypass the ads with 1 click on my remote. That's the reason I record so much stuff, in a typical 1 hour programme, 19 minutes are ads!

My post code is EH41 4AZ and my area switched to digital in June, the 2nd instalment being on 22nd June. I am extremely disappointed to find that I am unable to receive ITV 3 as I was looking forward to seeing repeats of favourite programmes. I was able to view them at a friend's house but I can no longer do that. I have contacted the digital switchover help line and I was told I would not be able to receive ITV 3. Why? I feel swindled!

David Elder: The Digital UK postcode checker predicts that you should have good reception on all six muxes in your area if you use the Black Hill transmitter. You will need a group B aerial mounted for horizontal polarisation to receive Black Hill. If you are currently using the Haddington relay transmitter you will only receive the 3 PSB muxes from that site.

My transmitter is the Haddington relay transmitter as you suggest so that is probably the answer to my query. I live in a block of flats and we have a communal aerial which probably doesn't help. THanks for your reply though.

We have a problem with ITV3 on both our Freeview plus box and the freeview fitted to the TV. The picture breaks up and freezes. It does not happen on any other channels. When I turn the Freeview Plus box off and on again it says there is an aerial short circuit. The signal strength is always 100% but the quality varies between 40% and 90%. The aerial is only 12 months old and as I say there is no issue with any other channels

Still having problems with ITV3 having no sound. Have also noticed this on a couple of other channels too (e.g. challenge). Signal strength is over 60% (about same for other channels) and audio button (which normally gives choice of english or english AD) now shows nothing. postcode BR2.
Can someone please help me watch heartbeat and goodnight sweetheart again?

Hi all
Wondering if anyone can help me, we live in Holland and have also lost ITV3 from our satellite list. We have a DiSEqC Rotor satellite and we are still picking up all the other UK channels, BBC1, ITV 1 etc. Any advice on if we can get it back and can we expect to be losing other channels?
many thanks

Ade: Try a manual scan on Mux Ch31, as at only 3 miles away from the transmitter there is no reason that you shouldn't be receiving it, unless that is your boxes tuner is on the verges of blocking because of an over powerful signal from the main stations on high power.

If you have a set top type aerial around, try using that for a test.

tried a manual scan of UHF CH 31 on the built in freeview tv and although it says signal is strong theres nothing on there. Other freeview only has autoscan so no joy there either.

I have had no ITV3 for a long time - months not weeks and was looking forward to getting it back at swithcover. I have all the channels available with strong signals except ITV3 which on one TV shows as Channel 10 but does not have a strong enough signal to show the picture, but does not show at all on another TV. The signal strength is abysmal. What can i do? (Post code NG17 8BE).
jb38
Monday 5 September 2011 5:59PM
Wendy: You cant really do anything, as the multiplex ITV3 uses (Mux Ch29) will be on low power until 12th of October, many people are having problems with this including myself.
jb38
Monday 5 September 2011 8:08PM
Wendy: Just out of interest, when you say that a signal is showing but is not strong enough to resolve a picture, is the signal showing of a reasonably constant nature, or is it diving up and down?

The reason I ask this is, that if the signal is reasonably constant then a booster could well help in this type of situation, maybe you could also mention where your aerial is situated.
