Hi, the reception of ITV3 has deteriorated over the past 3 months. The picture now breaks up continuously - all other Freeview channels are fine. What is going on? Postcode E1W 2YG

Hi,
While I can still get the video and audio on Freeview Channel 10, nothing comes up on the EPG, regardless of how long I wait. All other channels appear to be OK. My postcode is AB22 8RX. What's the problem? This applies to two modern TV's on independent exterior aerials.
Thanks.

John Hutton: Although you report that problem is the same on both TV's which are working totally independent of each other, it depends on whether or not you had initially re-tuned them at the same time? as should a fault at the transmitter have been in evidence at that time then this would have affected both devices.

I would be inclined to try carrying out a factory re-set on one of the TV's followed by an auto-tune, as dependant upon the results you could then just repeat the process on the second set.

Another point that should be noted is, that you would appear to located right next door to the Balgownie relay, and although its only a low powered transmitter of only 8 watts, but because you are using outdoor aerials it could possibly be causing a problem in your TV's tuners, as they will sense its there at a high level. (by being so close!)

Hi to whom it may concern
I have just purchased a 46"Samsung digital tv
I connected it to my existing aerial which worked reasonably o k with my old digital freeview box, but did get some distortion on channel 10 itv3. So I have now purchased a Televes active intelligent wide band aerial
but the reception on channel 10 itv3 seems to be worse. Do you have any answers please. All other tv and radio channels are transmitting O K. Thanku for listening.

Chris: As you are indicated as being located at only 8 miles away from Crystal Palace your recently purchased aerial is totally over the top for reception, that is even at present, and come April 18th when the station switches to high power is very likely to cause complete blocking of reception through overloading your tuners input.

I feel that you are possibly trying to compensate for problems that are basically out with your control and introducing others in the process, as an aerial more along the lines of a log 40 at the very most should be suffice for your needs, especially so when switchover takes place.

As regards to your aerial, these devices are really intended as a way (or attempt anyway) of getting over reception problems where near line of site is involved coupled to extreme distance, obviously neither applying in your case.

We live in Cambridgeshire just a few miles form the Sandy transmitter. Hitherto we have received ITV3 fine except for the hiatus when the area went digital. Since Novemeber 2011 however, ITV3 has been transmitted on very low power for a reason that is not explained so we cannot receive it.By contrast Al Jazeera and Russia Today are fine! And IV3 comes back during daytime at weekends. Odd! Is this going to be corrected? I'm surprised that advertisers pay for ait time that isn't going to be transmitted - maybe they don't!

Mikeb: Another thing to try is to fit a variable attenuator to reduce the signal level.

Your problem *could* be that the high power signals (i.e. all but ITV3 etc) are acting to desensitise the receiver thereby making it not sensitive enough to "hear" the ITV3 signal.

You might find that reducing the level of the signals going into the receiver will increase its sensitivity to ITV3 etc. It will be a balance because you will be reducing the level of the ITV3 signal and there is no guarantee that it can be struck.

Get yourself an attenuator such as this:

www.ebay.co.uk link icon 1-20dB variable digital tv aerial signal attenuator | eBay

Others are available and from other sellers. This one is the cheapest when searching eBay for "variable attenuator".

Mrs S Ede: Any questions involving a reception issue must be accompanied by a location being given and preferably in the form of a post code, as its impossible to assess the signal levels expected at wherever you might be located.

Further to my earlier posting, I have now discovered that there is nothing between Channel 5 and Channel 9 (BBC4). I had access to all channels prior to re-tuning. I live in south London.

Regarding my earlier postings - I disconnected the aerial from my DVD player/recorder, and again re-tuned the programmes (this in fact removed everything). I then re-connected the aerial and once more re-tuned. Lo! Everything is back! Even Channel 10 (ITV3).

My ITV3 picture kept freesing & breaking
up/pixelating.
Siganl strength good according to my wharfdale digibox.

The cure to the above conditions was to disconnect the old equpment equipmet (VCR/anolog DVD recorder) from the uhf ariel output from the digibox!
I sudjest the ch25 as used by new freeview setup for ITV3 & uhf outputs from many old equipment must be very closely tuned!
Even if you have lost ITV3 completely, it may be due to some other bit of equipment connectted to the ariel.
Possible idear is to make sure your digibox is the only thing connected to your ariel & then check the quality of ITV3!

How do you get ITV 3 in this area DT 3 5 AT
Mark Fletcher
Sunday 6 May 2012 4:45PM Halifax
Esme Read,DT3 5AT.Definitely not from the three nearby vertically polarised relays of Weymouth,Preston and Bincombe Hill within your location as they're all freeview lite transmitters only broadcasting public service multiplexes BBCA,D3+4 and BBCB (HD),not the commercial multiplexes ArqA,ArqB and the SDN multiplex which carries the ITV3 channel.
To receive the full package you may have to either direct your aerial polarised horizontally to the main Stockland Hill transmitter or if possible at Rowridge, here preferably polarised vertically as the commercial multiplexes on that mast broadcasts at 200kw on vertical polarity, but only on 50kw (commercial multiplexes only) on horizontal polarisation.
Either Stockland Hill or Rowridge masts are both all group A transmitters and if you did decide to opt for the full package from one of the above, you will need a group A aerial, either a Yagi 18A or for slightly more gain a X-Beam 16A antenna.
Dave Lindsay
Sunday 6 May 2012 7:16PM
Esme Read: Freesat may be your only way.

The terrestrial transmitters that cover your area best don't carry the Commercial channels, which include ITV3.

It is very doubtful as to whether you will be able to receive the Commercial channels from Rowridge. Only an installer who is on site can tell you with certainty.

Living in BN2 area, have had no ITV 3 for over a week now, anyone know why this may be? was fine after switchover in March but past week its either breaking up or blank?
Dave Lindsay
Monday 7 May 2012 6:59PM
Andrew: Whilst BN2 is a large area and signal strength will vary across it, the Whitehawk transmitter is near the centre. In which case, if you are receiving directly from Whitehawk and have good line of sight, then your receiver could be suffering from signal overload:

www.ukfree.tv link icon Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

However, if you are using the transmitter at Ovingdean or Saltdean, then they do not broadcast ITV3 and the other Commercial channels. In their main service area, the Commercial signals will be weak or non-existant, so the above does not apply.

As I say, it is impossible to be specific because you have specified an area that has wide varying signal expectations.
Dave Lindsay
Monday 7 May 2012 7:03PM
Andrew: As you received ITV3 prior to switchover, you are clearly in an area served by a full-Freeview transmitter and Whitehawk would seem the most likely.

If this is so, then I suggest signal overload.

Before you look at the possibility that it is too much signal, check that it is tuned to C57 for ITV3 and not C25 which is Rowridge. Do this by bringing up the signal strength screen.

If it turns out that this, or any of the channels, are tuned to Rowridge instead of Whitehawk, then you can avoid the former by unplugging the aerial lead for the first 50% of the scan.

Wednesday 9 May 2012 10:56PM
John: If you are receiving Freeview signals from Sandy Heath, the frequency for the SDN mux changed this morning (9th May 2012), so you will need to do a retune, after first clearing the channel list of old data. If you are using the Oxford transmitter check for single frequency interference on or around C62.

We receive from sandy heath. Itv 3 was fine until we retuned on 9th may now it breaks up or we can't get it at all. We've also lost other freeview channels we had before 9th may
jb38
Saturday 12 May 2012 9:07PM
maria rossi: The most likely explanation is that your TV / box has picked up signals from an alternative transmitter during the retune, particularly in the case of TV3 etc which moved from mux Ch31 to Ch51.

Your post code, or at least one from nearby e.g: shop etc, is required to be able to give further advice as signal levels from alternative transmitters cannot be checked on without this info.

Sunday 13 May 2012 3:46PM
Brian Smith: Its difficult for anyone to offer advice when you haven't mentioned your location, (pref: post code or one nearby) as its not possible to assess the signal strengths expected in your area from whatever transmitter that might be covering it.

Maybe you could also mention the model number of the TV or box that you are using.

Sunday 13 May 2012 7:41PM
Brian Smith: Thanks for that info, and which with knowledge of your location raises a question concerning your aerial, insomuch that as Rowridge's commercial multiplexes radiate the maximum power on their vertically polarised transmissions have you as yet turned your aerial around to its vertical mounting position?

The difference in power is quite massive, insomuch that on horizontal polarisation the three COM muxes (ITV3 on SDN) only radiate on 50Kw whereas its 200kw on vertical.

Hi,
Until recently we could watch ITV3 no problem.
The screen now says "No service" or sometimes "No signal". We live in the OL3 7EF area and our TV is a Panasonic plasma Model TH-37PX80B.
Our cheap Tv in our dining room can still receive ITV3 no problem!
We can also receive it via satellite dish.
So why can't our Panasonic Tv receive it?
Any suggestions?
Both our Tv aerials are horizontal and pick up our signals from a booster mast about half a mile away. All normal channels signal strength is good.
