mr b smith: Are you using the Waltham transmitter or one of its relays? This transmitter no longer transmits BBC Two analogue. Next Wednesday, all the remaining analogue channels from this transmitter will close down for good.

You can no longer tune in a VCR in the same way after switchover. You need to use a set-top box to decode the digital signal, and have the set-top box select the channel you want to record at the time you want the recording to start. Check your VCR's manual for how to get it to record from a SCART input. If it can't, or you can't work it out, you need a set-top box with an RF modulator, which you can then tune the VCR into.

Hi, i can tune to digital TV channels fine with my TV. But when i try with my new PVR it doesn't find any channels. I have tried with three different brand new PVR's so it could, but highly unlikely, be those. Has anybody experienced this?

thx

Stuart: What you mention is strongly suggestive of either the method used to couple up the PVR, or that your signal is below a level that they can resolve a picture, although this unlikely if experienced on more than one device.

What method are you using to feed the aerial into your PVR's aerial socket?

Julia: Guess you've retuned for Sutton Coldfield's DSO1, but the HD signals haven't changed yet (still using UHF channel 34).
It will change to UHF channel 40 on the 21st September (DSO2).

Hi, I rescanned my box recently as I was missing a channel that had recently been added to Freeview. I can receive channels via the Mendip (West) or the Wenvoe (Wales).

I live in the Bristol area so want to use the Mendip transmitter, however my box picked up all the welsh channels including S4C and ITV Wales and Channel 4 has changed from number 4 to channel 805 for some reason! I followed information from the tvretune website and put in the channel frequencies it suggested to get it back to West tv but this only changed the BBC channels and not the ITV or Channel 4 settings. Anyone know the manual retune frequency to get it back to normal? Thanks :)

I have just moved house to Newcastle. When retuning my freeview HD box I no longer get any HD channels. Other than doing an automatic search I'm not sure what I can do to get them back. What can I do?
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 14 September 2011 1:18PM
Jimjams: In the Tyne Tees region, only the Pontop Pike transmitter currently broadcasts an HD service, and it does so on C63.

If your aerial points to another transmitter, for example Fenham, HD services won't start until the second stage of switchover on 26 September 2012.

At the postcode you've given, Digital UK predict an excellent chance of reliable reception of all services from Pontop Pike. You will need to get the aerial pointed at that transmitter. If you currently get Multiplex D services reliably, you shouldn't need a new aerial, as it will already be a wideband. If not, it's probably a Group A - Pontop Pike transmits in Group C/D.

Jimjams: Sorry, I just noticed that you provided a pair of co-ordinates, not a postcode. You'll have to take the prediction with a pinch of salt, or provide a full postcode for a more accurate one.

If you're using a communal aerial you will have to check with the building's owner. If the aerial is definitely pointing to Pontop Pike, the distribution system might be channelised and not set up to amplify C63 at the moment. I assumed Fenham because this is the page for C21, and Fenham will use C21 for HD services after switchover.

I'd like some advice from anyone who understands the modulation techniques and error-correction provided by digital TV.

I'm trying to decide what we should do with the MATV system at Brighton Marina after the DSO next March. With the analogue signals we transpose frequencies (channels) so as not to get RF pickup on any badly shielded drop leads etc and this is normal practice. For the digital channels we currently transpose three of the muxes but not the other three (why? I don't know - it was introduced on a legacy system before I moved here).

My question is: with the high power digital transmitters, should we transpose frequencies to avoid any direct RF pickup clashing with the (slightly delayed) MATV data stream and clobbering the BER? Or is it completely unnecessary with digital transmissions?

The corollary of these questions poses another: does it do any harm to transpose channel frequencies for digital TV? If not, we might as well transpose all six since our head-end equipment is frequency agile. Can I assume that there is nothing RF-specific in the data streams?

I'd be very grateful for any informed opinion or advice.

I have lost several stations in the recent sandy heath change, after tv requested retune. I think my ariel may be off. Is it just using a compass and find 231 Degree and reposition the ariel direction and then auto channels

Every time I turn my television on I have to retune my television, I performed the re-tuning when the switch over happened like I was instructed to, I also followed the adivce you gave someone in another post turning it off unplugging and retuneing ect but this has not solved it, my television runs through the main arial on the roof, once I retune my television everytime I turn it on it works perfectly until the next time I turn it off and on again, please help me! Its driving me scatty!! I'm in Leicester! Thanks Vikki

Wednesday 28 September 2011 10:02PM
Vikki: If you're using a Panasonic TV, they have a "new service message" option in the menu (sometimes in the picture menu, but more usually in the tuning menu - can take a bit of searching to find it).
If you set this to "off" rather than "on", your TV will come on without asking for a retune every time.

Thursday 29 September 2011 11:04PM
Peter Smith: As long as whatever you transpose to is not allocated (C60-C69 for 4G mobile, C31-C38 for new mulitplexes) and C21+, C22+, C24, C25, C27, C28, C30 and C31 in use at Rowridge you will be fine, there is nothing in the RF signal to prevent reception if it transposed - this is what happens at relays anyway.

Hello again my tv is a soundwave and I've attempted to change settings but it's still doing the same retune after every turn on! Any more ideas? Thanks Vikki
Mike Dimmick
Friday 30 September 2011 2:36PM
Peter Smith: The reason for transposing on analogue is to avoid ghosting - due to the processing delays in the amplifier, the direct path from the transmitter can be shorter than the path via the cables. If field strengths are high enough, the direct path shows up as a ghost image.

Digital TV is designed to cope with delayed paths - indeed multiple paths are used deliberately in some areas, called a Single Frequency Network - and you should be fine without transposing.

Property managers should look at the appropriate section of the Digital UK website, at www.digitaluk.co.uk link icon Property Managers - Home .

The transmissions *do* include descriptions of where to find other multiplexes belonging to the same transmitter or group, but very few boxes actually pay any attention to that information. (We wish they did, it would save all this retuning hassle!)

Friday 30 September 2011 4:05PM
Vikki: Can't say I've ever heard of Soundwave - is it a "Freemans" own brand?
Many of these uncommon brands are Vestel products, but I've no idea if Soundwave is actually one of theirs.
Has the constant need to retune at switch on always been happening since new? If so, it sounds like a faulty TV.
I can't find any customer support information - does the user guide provide any contact details for guarantee purposes?
Peter Smith
Friday 30 September 2011 6:57PM Brighton
Mike Dimmick and Briantist: Thank you both for your helpful replies. I think we will transpose, then. I'll also avoid C41, C44 and C47 (Brighton Central) and C50, C55 and C61 (Ovingdean) since there may just be coverage but it still leaves plenty of channels once analogue has gone.

Thanks again.

Monday 3 October 2011 10:03AM Coleraine
Hi there,
My mother-in-law has done all the right things and updated to digital terrestrial, receiving broadcasts in Coleraine from the Limavady transmitter. Oddly, the reception if ITV 3 is very ropey... Actually, it's entity unwatchable. Looking at the signal strength on the set top box display, it seems to jump around between a full signal, and almost nothing at all.
I've looked at the digital switchover site, and it tells me that I should be able to receive itv 3 and all the others without any problems.
Her aerial has recently been upgraded, and the problem is the same on her tv in the kitchen (a tv with a built-in decoder), and her living room ( a Philps DTR220/05 set-top box).
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what I can do/say?
Mike Dimmick
Monday 3 October 2011 1:58PM
Christopher: If that's her postcode then yes, it is expected to give good results.

An aerial upgrade should not have been necessary if analogue signals were clear. It could have resulted in too much signal. Or, it could mean that signals from Divis are picked up strongly enough to be stored in preference to those from Limavady. It may be worth checking whether another version is present somewhere else in the programme guide that works better. If so, a manual retune should sort it out - see Digital Region Overlap for other suggestions.

I've just moved to a new house in Wimbledon. In the bedroom I have 2 aerial sockets labelled UHF and VHF. When I connect to my digital TV and complete the automatic tuning it won't pick up ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 on either analogue or digital sources.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Jamesh76: If it's in the bedroom and there's a socket in another room, such as the lounge, then I'd take the TV to it and tune it in.

Can you ascertain as to whether there is a TV aerial connected to the socket in question? Perhaps trace where the cable runs and check that it is connected properly within the socket.

Dusica: If my memory serves me correctly on that model you should be able to manually install channels under the "Installation / Service set up / Manual install service" menu.

However I would recommend that you carry out a factory reset first then followed by an auto-tune, this achieved by holding down the Menu button on the side (or top) of the TV (not remote) for about 5 seconds or so until a menu appears, then carry out steps 1-5 as though you were first installing the set.
