Can I have an extra digibox to view free-to-air channels?
Yes. You will need two things:
- A second Sky Digibox; and
- A "Quad LNB" to replace the "LNB" on your existing dish.
There are several ways to achieve this. One is to purchase a Sky+ box (currently from £89) as this comes with the Quad LNB; you can get a second box from Sky, or buy a new or second Digibox and get a Quad LNB from a local retailer or from Sky (Sky charges £99 for the box and £50 installation, and there are terms and conditions). See
http://www.sky.com/ordersky/home.
(I understand that the "extra £10 per month" for having a Sky+ box will be withdrawn in October).
Many people use a professional installer to install the new LNB because it can be very difficult to do properly without the correct tools. See here for your local installers and shops:
Aerial Services & Supplies
Satellite TV & Equipment
You will also face the
same issues for reception of 3+4+5 until this gets
resolved.
You can just buy a new Digibox from a local retailer (or second hand), and have a local aerial installer fit a Quad LNB to your existing dish and connect it to the new box in the new location.
You won't have to even tell Sky about this, and there will be no subscription.

If I fit a quad LMB and second digibox Myself can I call Sky and sign up for Multi room or do they have to instal the equipment befor they let you have it?christopher brownSunday 19 August 2007 12:20PM
You say `buy a second box from SKY`, but they wont sell you one, if you have a box thats it tough you cant have another. I know I have tried, no joy Steve PrankardSaturday 19 April 2008 3:16PM
I have done all the above with 2 additional sky boxes and it works perfectly. I swapped out my quad LNB for an 8-channel as I have an HD box on the original (Sky) fit and a third box elsewhere in the house (so I needed 5 outputs total).
Now, I get quite a lot of channels on the 2 new boxes but there are a whole host of other channels (UK Gold etc) that are not free to air(although they did used to be!!) The on-screen message say's 'Existing Sky Customers can receive this channel (and the rest) for £1.00 per month. But that's not strictly true. What it means is, if you've registered the additional multi-room box (or boxes) for £10 per month, you can receive these channels. (Not sure if they mean you'll pay an extra £11 per month total. It's a bit confusing, but all I want to do is get these additonal channels. Would be quite happy paying them £2.00 per-month extra but not £20 or £22 per month extra. ANyone got any suggestions? (PS my two 'new' boxes were from my previous residence and were registered there but my ex gave them to me and has new sky boxes registered at my old address).
Would love to have anyones thoughts please.Steve Prankar: Get some FreesatfromSky (fSfS) cards at £20 each, or wait until May 5th and get proper HD Freesat? Steve PrankardSunday 20 April 2008 11:26AM
Thanks Briantist. Not too bothered about HD but how does fsfS work. Does it involve Sky sending a downlink signal to the box once you have purchased the card? And do you get all the £1" channels once you have paid your £20?
Understand it lasts for three years - where do you purchase the card from - do you just call the regular Sky customer service line and asf for an fSfS card?
Sorry about all the questions.
SteveHi Steve, you dont get £1 channels as they are pay channels. the card will last until sky change cards & if that is within three years they will replace them free of charge, if not its another £20 per card. you buy the cards from sky & then phone the number that comes in the pack with the cards to get them turned on. Hi Mark,
So what channels do you get if you buy this card? I already get quite a few fta channels (i.e., all bbc, itv, Ch 5, Sky 3, S4C, Zone Reality etc others) but as I said, the ones I'm interested in are those that are marked up 'Sky Customers can get this channel and more for £1 extra per month (EUR 2 ROI)', such as Sky 1 & 2, UK Gold,Dave, Living, Virgin, Bravo, Challenge, Para Comedy etc etc. Am guessing that these are the ones you are referring to when you say you dont get them, even if you buy one of these cards from Sky (or two in my case as I have two boxes not registered with Sky)??? Steve PrankardSunday 20 April 2008 6:29PM
Thanks Briantist. I pay £38 per month at present for all but the movies on my one registered sky box in my main living room. I got the other two boxes from my ex (she upgraded to HD). They work fine and I have the original cards in them that were originally registered in my name at the previous address. So I am already a Sky customer at my new address and have all the channels I want on my main box but would just like to have Sky 1 & 2, UK Gold,Dave, Living, Virgin, Bravo, Challenge, Para Comedy etc on the second and third boxes...but from what you and Mark are saying, I dont think I am going to be able to do that. I dont want any of the premium channels on these boxes that I have on my main box, just the ones that they say I can have for £1 on the second and third boxes...which I am guessing they wont let me do because those boxes are not registered at my new address? By the way, thanks for your time and trouble. Steve Hi Steve, if you want pay channels then you either have to pay £10 per month per box & connect each one permanantly to a telephone line or have two freesat cards, no telephone connections & no non free channels. its multiroom or std sub with freesat in the other two rooms. However you can take your (subscribed) card from your main box to use in any other box to access non premium content. Dave & Virgin are free on freeview at the moment if you are able to recieve it where you are. Mark Aberfan Aerials scottySunday 20 April 2008 9:55PM
