My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Thanks Briantist - a bit glib though. I live in Cyprus (NO snow here)and there is a definite drop in signal strength from the 24th December on certain channels including Sky News and CNN (not onBBC News Channel or BBC radio channels though) as I also received a similar on screen message. Perhaps these Sat technicians at Sky know the answer?

Peter Stevenson - I f you checked out your connections and they are OK you may just have to hang on for tha SKY installer. It's possble the extreme drop in temperature may have impacted on your dish mounts and confiquration and it is now that little bit off. ( doesn't take much movemet or instability to cause signal loss. Other possibilities are at thaw water ingress in the cabling or LNB failure. Will watch for press relesea of "Kids" lynching their Dad for missing out on SKY !!!!!

I have the same problem as Rachel except when I have my old sky box plugged in at the wall (but not turned on)it also reduces the signal quality on the Sky+ box to zero. In addition to this if I record a programme on Sky+ I cannot see any chanel other than the one I am recording (no signal received message shows). I have checked all connections to the box and the dish and can see no problem. Any ideas? Thanks

One of our TVs was ok on SKY but the other said '11 no signal.' Tried all the usual fixes. Swopped boxes- no change.
Phoned installer and it was fixed in an instant. The TV's own remote had been used to try and change a SKY channel instead of the SKY remote. The TV was now on channel 11 instead of the required channel 1.
Channel 1 reselected and all OK.
Spent hours trying to sort this last night!
Doh!

The only channels I get a problem with "no signal" are BBC channels including BBC1 and News 24. All other channels are OK. the signal strength etc is fine. This started about a month ago.

Efe - Freeview requires an externally mounted TV aerial for satisfactory digital TV reception.

Hi, we have had 2 re- conditioned boxes, a new dish and the dish was re positioned, but after 5 minutes of watching it comes up with no signal being received.
We've had 3 engineers come out and tested the signal strength which they said it was o.k
I' m really frustrated at not having a t.v to watch for 3days. We've been customers for 9years and have had no problems in that time until now!
Has anyone else experienced the same.
What should we do?

I have been having this problem for several months on both boxes (THOMSON). Sky have adived me to do the above checks and I have removed the card and checked all the cables, they suggest I pay for an engineer. I do not see why I should have to pay for an engineer when it is obvious a problem with Sky equipment.

@Corrine,
If you are a SKY subscriber and the equipment is over 12 months old, it is up to you to get the problem fixed. As BOTH boxes have a problem, I would suggest the problem is with your dish (may require re-alignment/new LNB) - although older Thomson/Grundig SKY boxes had bad power supplies which fail (usually with the loss of SOME channels, eventually giving a "No Sat signal being recieved" error message. these power supplies can be repaired (I've done a couple myself). Hope this is of some help.

Briantist
Friday 14 January 2011 4:36PM
scott: Yes, the second tuner is only used when it is required. You need to find out what is preventing your signal getting to the second input. With the power off.

sorry briantist don't understand what you mean.
Briantist
Friday 14 January 2011 4:56PM
scott: There must be some reason for you having a "no signal" on the second input.

As there are two connections and two cables connecting up, a visual check might reveal what the problem is as they should be identical in every way.

I've got a sky + box and a sky hd box.

The sky hd box is working fine but the sky + box has no satellite signal on the screen when i go to certain channels e.g sky sports.

channels 101, 102, 103 etc are fine but when i go to the "extra" channnels then i get the message.

Any tips would be welcome?

Matt - If your getting all channels on the HD box then the dish alignment is OK It then comes down to either a faulty input connection at the receiver and or at the receivers connection to the LNB Sometimes this can be water ingress or just a poorly sealed connection. It might also be the PSU (power supply) in the receiver itself - usually the beginning of capicitor failure. If it's the latter you can obtain a replacement PSU for the receiver at a reasonable cost From "Satcure" online. These are of a superior quality than the originals
and as the PSU sub boards are anchored by removal screws and ribbon linked to the main board it's quite a straight forward swop out. If you lack the necessary skills best to have tis checked out by a competant repair outlet if this is indeed the problem. Always unplug the receiver from the mains Before doing any checks.

Last week had 'no signal' 29, tried everything over the phone so they sent engineer but whilst waiting for him it came back and was fine, today it went again with same message!! Only had sky 1 month and when installed man said the tree opposite could be a problem, it's been pretty windy where I am and dish is on roof, thought it could be that branches were blowing in front of dish but it's not windy now and it's still off, tried everything now, any ideas??

Cannot access box office.Grundig box DV3 comes up with "viewing information 13" insufficient credit on viewing card. Sky said they would have to send an engieer to reset box at a charge to me. Any ideas

Can you view everything else except box office? and if by any chance you can then the obvious question would be whether or not you have just purchased the box along with the card? as considering the box office can be used for "pay per view" material one explanation could be that the previous owner could simply be low on stored credit.

I would refrain from entertaining the idea of an engineer calling, as the expense of doing this would far outweigh the cost of another box.

We have an old type digi box in our bedroom, no card, only get few channels, think it's called freestat, it is saying no signal and won't come out of standby, tried all the above to no avail. Downstairs we have digi box with card in it so know Sky is working downstairs. Any suggestions please?

Monday 24 January 2011 5:19PM
Jenny McCabe: The term "digi box" usually always refers to a Sky satellite device and if this is what you are meaning then it not coming out of standby can indicate that the box is faulty. (affecting some Grundig types in particular)

Try unplugging it from the mains and leaving it about 30 seconds before re-connecting it again, then and after about another 30 seconds try it out, if it doesnt respond its defective.

Hi JB38 many thanks for replying, yes it is a Sky device but it is a really old model, did all you suggested and still nothing, so I guess it's for the bin!!

Guess we'll have to buy another.

Thanks.

Monday 24 January 2011 10:01PM
Jenny McCabe: Yes! best policy as cost wise they aren't really worth fixing as that type of problem usually requires a power unit repair, or worse should it be a main board problem (gives same symptom) the device effectively turns into a bucket job.

That said though, I did mean to qualify my comment insomuch that the "box being faulty" was based on the assumption that the remote control batteries were OK and that you got no response from pressing any of the front panel buttons.

The real test being to unplug the device from the mains, press AND KEEP HOLDING the back up button whilst you reconnect the mains, continue holding for at least another 30 seconds and if inside this time (about 15/20 secs) the four lights on the front panel doesn't come on accompanied by a message on your screen, then you can safely take it as being scrap.

Phil: If I recall correctly, that error indicates the modem in the box has failed. Don't worry, when the engineer changes the board or swaps the box, the new box will let Sky know about the things you have not paid for yet.

Hi, I can get all channels on my sky+ box fine apart from the main BBC1 (South East) channel on 101. It comes up with a "no satellite signal is received" message. Tried the other BBC channels (981-990) and these work fine. Signal strength seems reasonable on both channels. Any ideas, would the reset procedure be worth doing in this case ? Thanks in advance. Dave B.

Thanks for the quick response. I have just followed procedure 2, BBC 1 is now on but very blocky / signal breaking up. As mentioned all other channels seems fine still. Any other thoughts, someone mentioned to me it could be the LNB on it's way out ?

Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
