Can I use my ex-contract sky digital satellite receiver to get Freeview channels?
You can get the following Freeview channels on with an ex-contract digital satellite receiver (once it is connected). Items marked with a star require either a Freesat from Sky (fSfS) card, or a expired Sky subscription card to view.

Hi Brian. i need some advise please.
I have a satalite dish in my garden for which the wire has been cut at the aerial connection point.
i have no sky box or any other. My question is once i replace or repair the wire should i buy a free sat box or sky plus box? ebay have both for sale.(sky plus boxes more expensive)
i dont want to pay any monthly fees and believe this is the best option, also what is the difference. i believe you need a viewing card for the plus box?....

when are we going to get subtitles on hd channelsm.whitbrook: They worked OK the other day for me, which system are you using? Dips: I would advise you buy a Freesat box, a Sky+ box will do nothing special without a contract. R

I currently have sky HD+ box but due to current government cuts can no longer afford £60+ per month on a Sky suscription. Having read the above answers with great interest I can see that I can use this box still with my old subscription card which is great news however I'm disappointed that i won't be able to record on the box now!
How will I record my favourite programs in HD now?R

Hi, I have a sky satellite dish aerial but no receiver box (I now use cable via a V+ box). I also have a Panasonic DVD recorder (DMR-EX99EVB) which incorporates freeview which i wish to use to give me more options to record freeview programmes and greater programme storage (V+ allows me two programmes and limited storage). I have no other aerial as the signal is inadequate in my location. Can I connect the dish aerial direct to the recorder via the RF input, or do I need to purchase a Freeview box to send the signal through to the recorder?R

i have recently connected my old standard sky box in the bedroom and all is working correctly, apart from the fact i have no sound on any of the channels?G
gillyThursday 26 May 2011 4:13PM
yes it is connected using a scartgilly: You should check in the "Sound Settings" menu on the Sky box to see if the sound has been turned down there. Also check in the same menu that your selected language is "English" and you don't have "Audio Description" enabled. L

im currently on sky+ downstairs and there is all the wires to set up another box in my bedroom if i bought a sky+ box and card off ebay will i get all the channels that i pay for down stairs thanksleah: No, you won't. You will have to pay Sky an additional "Multiroom" fee each month to have the same channels (and also the ability to record/pause/play). S

Q. I have an unsubscribed sky box that I can get channels 1-5 and sky news on. I have a digi box that records and want to use it in conjunction with the sky box as no outside ariel. On advice I bought a double scart socket as my tv has only one. I still can't get the digi box to work and it will only send images shooting sideways across screen. Is it possible to do what I am attempting? Many thnaks in advance for responsesheila: You can't use a Freeview+ (or indeed Freesat+) box to record from the Sky box. J

Hi i'm currently usin old sky box & dish 2 get Freeview on tv downstairs. If i get another old sky box,is there anyway i can use Freeview upstairs (its built in2 tv) by runnin it off from downstairs? There's no cable for sky upstairs & dish is on roof so not practical 2 run new cable direct from dish.i was thinkin somethin like when u do ur own multi Room With an Arial extension lead? Any help appreciated.H
Harry Wednesday 1 June 2011 12:15PM
Gemma - I think your getting a bit confused between Freeview and Sky.
Sky uses a satellite dish and Freeview uses a rooftop aerial.
It doesn't matter about whether your TV's have built in Freeview or not.
If you have a Sky box working downstairs, you can use an aerial extension lead from the RF2 output on the Sky box and run it up to the second TV upstairs. You will not need another Sky box upstairs if you do this, the lead just plugs straight into the RF in socket on the TV. You will need to turn on the RF output on the back of your sky box, you can do so by doing this -
How do I change the RF output channel on a Sky Digibox? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice
Once you have done all this, tune your TV upstairs to the appropriate RF channel and you will be able to view the Television Picture from downstairs. You will not be able to change the Television channel from upstairs though. (OL37EA) G

Thanks Harry,
Yea we're watching the tv through the dish as there's no aerial on roof & the other small aerials dont get good enough signal. If I did want to watch different chanel to the one thats currently on downstairs, I'd have to have another sky box right? Would this 2nd sky box need to be directly connected to the dish on the roof, or is there another way? Sorry I'm a bit of a beginner at this :)H
Harry Wednesday 1 June 2011 1:37PM
Oldham Gemma - yes, you would need an additional sky box upstairs for this which would connect to the dish outside. I would have thought you would need an installer to do this for you!
Just give Sky a ring and ask them about Sky multiroom and an installer will come out and supply the new Sky box and wire it to the dish for you. G
GemmaWednesday 1 June 2011 1:44PM
London Thanks very much Harry,Think I understand it all now. I have a 2nd box, just need it connected to dish. Thanks againH
Harry Wednesday 1 June 2011 1:48PM
Oldham Anytime :)
Another thing to consider, when you do connect your second box upstairs to the dish, you will only be able to receive the free channels and no subscription channels (unless you phone Sky and ask them to upgrade your package). If you only receive the free channels downstairs anyway though, then you won't need to phone Sky. E

Hi.I have an ex contract sky+ box that we want use in granny flat to view just the free channels.I have recieved a card from sky to get the free channels (which is what a friend said i had to do) but need to phone with all serial number details etc.To activate this card do i need to attach the sky+ box to a phone line because i will have to unplug my current hd box to do this which gets very confusing for someone who doesnt know what they are doing.or can i just connect to tv without phone line.L

I just got a freeview box and have no signal at all, ive tried it in different areas of the room connecting the whole tv set up to the different sockets moving the aerial to try it in different places. Ive even checked to see if the aerial is freeview compatible and it is. any ideas?elise: No, you don't need to connect the box to a phone line. K

Hi Brian, my package with sky runs out soon. I will revert to sky freesat. I think i can use main box downstairs to record if I pay them £10? I have 2 basic boxes upstairs that will still receive basic sky? Can I replace 1 of these boxes with a hd box bought off ebay. What will I need to do for it to work? I obviously dont expect to receive hd or record upstairs. Just a better box and some routine hd channels. If so what box would you advise plz. Amstrad? Thomson or Samsung. Many thanks, Keith.D

Hi Briantist,
I'm going on vacation to Spain and the flat there will have a Sky box but no card. I don't have a Sky box (or card) and don't care about premium channels. Can I purchase an expired card on eBay to watch the free channels? Any compatibility issues I need to be aware of?
Thank you!riccume: You don't need a card to watch the free-to-air channels. It only provides access to PICK TV, 5* and 5USA.
If you want to buy a card, get it direct from Sky on 08442 411 602. C

The previous tennants in my new flat had sky installed - the dish and two wires are still in the flat, but the cables don't look like the coax cable.
My question is: are the cables currently in the flat ok to use with FreeSat?
