Can I use my ex-contract sky digital satellite receiver to get Freeview channels?

Can I use my ex-contract sky digital satellite receiver to get

You can get the following Freeview channels on with an ex-contract digital satellite receiver (once it is connected). Items marked with a star require either a Freesat from Sky (fSfS) card, or a expired Sky subscription card to view.

My mother has a Sky digibox on which she cancelled the contract after my father passed away.

The card is still in the box.

She can now only see a few channels on it (mostly BBC) but not her local ITV channel (STV).

Q 1. Should she be able to see all FTA and/or some FTV channels with her current setup or does she need to get a new freeview box?

Q 2. If she needs a new freeview box, can this use the existing satellite dish and cable.

blanefieldkenny: You need a FreeSAT box, not a FreeVIEW box.

sue: Your new TV should have exactly the same connector as before. If you have another type of connector you may have satellite or cable.

I live in postcode area KA24 5HE. I have an aerial in the loft and the signal on my digital box comes and goes but mostly goes ...have tried everything to rectify this so finally just resorted to watching analouge tv. afraid this will soon end and looking for cheapest way to go about this during the change over. Free sat, new aerial and conecting other t.v's in the household?? what is the average cost?

June Sillars: Move the aerial to the roof, that is all you need to do.

Hi, wonder if anyone can help. I have a subcription with sky with a sky dish and box, but not HD. I have just bought a new tv that had freeview hd in it. What connection if any do I need to recieve the freeview HD channels. Does it need an aerial cable or will it be connected through the sky box. Thanks
Briantist
Tuesday 19 April 2011 8:51AM
Lynn: Freeview HD is provided via a rooftop aerial pointing at a suitable transmitter.

Am I right in assuming that once you cancel sky and got the freesat option with them you lose completely the recording facility and the only way to record freesat would be on a freesat+ recorder box? Is there no work around for this? This is quite annoying as I own the Sky box, therefore the hard drive, i assume the argument is the software is sky's but i should be able to install some other software on the equipment i own? I guess that is a no, knowing sky, but all the same it is annoying.

Gary: Yes, that is correct. Please see Upgrading from Sky+HD to Freesat+HD | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice for more.

I have just purchased a new LG 19" tv for the kitchen.
I cant get any signal from the aerial on the TV.
Previously had a Phillips free view box and old analogue tv which worked.
Free view box gives a good signal but Ido not want to use it permanently.
Can you advise a suitable aerial ? what type ABCD etc.how many elements? etc.
I am roughly lined up with Winterhill Transmitter, (have a tall tree in the way)
Existing aerial is outside level with the roof ridge.
Can I find out a compass bearing to line it up?
Post code PR2 9FB.
Gratefull for any help you can give.
Thanks (PR2 9FB)

Hi Brian
thanks, thats what I have done but I would like to just use the tv on its own and remove the digi box to clear the work top area in kitchen.
Read some of the stuff on the site and now have a bearing to winterhill, will adjust aerial about 5^ and see if its better.
Is a K aerial suitable for my area?
Briantist
Sunday 24 April 2011 10:14PM
Chris: Winter Hill reception uses an aerial of group C/D or wideband.

Take care you don't already have too much signal.

Hi There.
Is it true that though Freeview HD can be picked up with an ordinary aerial (I have found it quite easy even with an indoor aerial) you won't get true HD without a HDMI connection going to the aerial??

Would love clarification on this. In my case the Freeview HD is built into the TV.

Robin

Robin: No special aerial is required for Freeview HD.

You will not get Freeview HD without an HDMI connection, or the DVB-T2 decoder being built into the set.

I have an LG 42" tv loaded with freeview and is HD ready, my landlord wants to install a satellite dish to improve signal to both flats, I want a freesat hd box and my neighbour only wants standard box, is this possible from one dish.

James Get them to install a quad LNB on the dish & run 2 cables to each flat. Then you can each use an HD freesat + box where you can record 1 & watch another channel or your neighbour can just use 1 cable for an SD box.

Hi,

I moved into this house and discovered a sky dish and attached cable had been left behind. I cancelled my Sky subscription at my old house a year ago but continue to have the sky box.

Is it possible to get more channels like true movies if I connect the above system up?

Hi again,

Using a freeview set box, there are some channels that get scrambled/distorted and therefore interferes with viewing. Is there a problem with the aerial or the freeview box?

I have a Samsung AV/Blu Ray Player attached to surround sound speakr, a cheap Technika Freeview box with one scart output and aerial in and out connections which runs from a communal digital dish connector on the wall.

Can I run the freeview box signal to the Sky+ box to allow me to convert the freeview audio signal to digital? I was thinking either scart to scart Sky+ / freeview box, continue using the optical link from Sky box to Samsung, and maybe using the Video out connections to the scart on the tv

Gerry: The RTE channels are encrypted. I believe you need a subscription from Sky Ireland - they are not listed on Sky UK's Freesat page at www.sky.com link icon FREESAT from Sky - What can I watch? . I don't think Sky offer a 'free' service in the Republic.

I have just purchased a freesat box. I am using an old sky dish for it. I can only get normal freeview channels and not any sky channels e.g. horror channel, cbs channels etc. Is this normal or should i be getting all the channels?

I just moved into new house that has a sat dish up,can I use it as a a basic aerial for my t.v without using a box?? My old house worked as described but the dish was about 20 years old! Ive rigged it the same at new address and it doesnt work!!
M
Mike Dimmick
Tuesday 10 May 2011 3:46PM
Terry: Only if the TV is a Freesat TV. They do exist, but they're not common. Otherwise you need a Freesat or Sky box to decode the signals.

Also check that the dish was used for Freesat or Sky within the last ten years. If not, it could be pointing to the wrong satellite cluster - analogue satellite used a cluster at 19.2°E, and that cluster is still used for foreign-language services, while UK digital services moved to a new cluster at 28.2°E.
M

Tuesday 10 May 2011 3:53PM
Malcolm: With a Freesat box you can only watch unencrypted free-to-air channels. You can find a list at www.ukfree.tv link icon All free-to-watch channels | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

If the channel is listed under 'Freesat from Sky' but not 'Freesat', and it doesn't have a * against it (indicating it's encrypted), it should be watchable on a Freesat box but you'll have to use the 'Add Channels' or 'Non-Freesat Channels' feature to watch it. Use www.lyngsat.com link icon Eurobird 1 & Astra 2A/2B/2D at 28.2°E - LyngSat to find the frequency, polarization, baud rate/symbol rate and FEC settings.

Freesat would like as many channels as possible in their programme guide, but the broadcaster does need to ask for a channel number in the guide. Once they have, Sky are taking a long time to co-ordinate the transmission of both sets of EPG data, so the channel works in both guides.

Hi I have a Sky dish currently with Sky and I receive HD channels through my sky box because, that is my subscription etc etc. Now the question is, when I tried removing to Coax cables that connect to the sky dish and feed it directly to the TV, How come I dont receive any signal?
I tried autostore though air and cable still got no results, is there any way of doing this? Any methods that you may know?
Regards, Yves.

I mean to say Sky Box not dish. Sorry
Briantist
Thursday 12 May 2011 3:41PM
Yves: You cannot connect a TV to a satellite dish, unless it has a Freesat receiver. If you want to watch via satellite on a TV, you need a Freesat box.

ive just bought a freesat box and am trying to connect it to a sky satellite dish which has two ends. The freesat box only has one connection avilable. Ive plugged them both in seperately cant get a signal with either. Any ideas why? and yes i am blonde lol HELP!
Briantist
Friday 13 May 2011 7:03AM
lisa: You should be able to use either connection from the dish.

When you make the connection - with the mains power off - ensure that the inner wire is connecting and that the outer "shield" part has no stray wires touching the inner wire.

Hi I recently got a sky+hd box and subscribe to sky. I`m using old standard box in other room but get BBC London, BBC England and no STV or Channel 5. I live in Scotland. Could you please advise.
Thank you
Briantist
Sunday 15 May 2011 4:49PM
Liz: The Sky box will provide the English services without a viewing card to tell it otherwise. If you have a fSfS ("Freesat from Sky") card, you can ring Sky and tell them you live in Scotland.
If you don't, then you will need a fSfS card - call 08442 411 602 and they will sell you one for about £25.
Another option is to get a Freesat box, you can get these from about £30 - you enter your postcode as part of the setup. See www.ukfree.tv link icon Upgrading from Sky to Freesat

Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
