Can I pick up Freeview from Germany?
As with analogue TV, the signals do not normally travel far enough for them to travel this far.
You can, however, watch many of these channels from the Astra 2D satellite from Germany, see:

i live in littlestone on sea, right on the south kent coastline, but i have some wacking great tree's blocking the line of sight, all i can get is a very weak signal from TF1 and France 3 pas de calais on analogue from the Boulogne transmitter.Tim: You will need a good line of sight and the largest aerial, but it is possible from the coast. Yes you can the cheapest way is with a free to air satellite kit from b&q for around £50 you will need to point the dish at astra 1 at 19e not the astra 2 satellite thatvus brits use !

Does anybody know how i set up to recieve free view thats built in my tv in Munster germany. I have free view biult in and i dont have a clue what satellite i need to try and find. Any ideas please? I can not live without BBC and ITV lol.Kirsty: You can't use your Freeview receiver to watch British TV in Germany, you will need a FreeSAT receiver and a dish pointing at the Astra 2 satellites at 28.2°E.

Hi. How can I receive UK channels in the Czech Republic? We have satellite tv through SKY LINK, so we have some UK news channels but we would like to get BBC1, BBC2, Channel 4, ITV etc. Do we need a new conector to put up? Oswestry we currently have analogue german tv (satelite dish and receiver) and a humax freeview receiver/recorder for UK channels. I would like to switch to digital German tv ideally with only one receiver for both UK and German tv, hoping to be able to record both on one system - is possible and what do I need?Gabi Hampson: What you need is a dual LNB holder (the small thing on the end of the satellite dish). You need one LNB pointing towards Astra at 19.2 degrees east (this is where the current one will be pointing) and another pointing towards Astra at 28.2 degrees east (this is the satellite Sky and Freesat use). Connect the two feeds to a DiSEqC switch. You will then need a Free-to-air digital PVR, and scan for channels. If you are familiar with Satellite equipment, then you could complete this yourself. We have full free view TV channels here in Bavaria, Germany and would like a new reciever box which would enable us to watch one channel whilst recording another. This may sound like a stupid question but I bought a recorder with Hard Disc drive and disc recorder where you can burn from one side to the other. Unfortunately we've not been able to record onto it without having the TV programme on! We need an easy to use box but one where you van delete ads etc would be great and one where you don't have to watch what you're recording would be even better!!!

Using my sky box i still pick up sky news,and a lot of other channels.
But no sport,and if could get itv or bbc free would be great.do i have an alternative,freesat or something else,

In readiness for the German analogue switch off I have connected my old dish with universal lnb pointing to Astra 1H to a sky box. I have put Eurosport German service in additional channels Ok but when I try to add Sport 1 I get no signal when inputting 12480V 27.5 3/4

Andrea: It looks to me as though the digital versions of ARD/Das Erste and ZDF, plus other free channels, are already available from the same satellite cluster as the analogue versions. Reportedly they've been available since 1996.
If you can already get Eins Extra and ZDF info, you don't need to do anything. If not, you'll need to get a digital satellite receiver and plug it in in place of your current analogue receiver. It's probably worth getting an HD-capable receiver at this point. Check for DVB-S2 and MPEG-4 AVC (also known as H.264) support. I believe there are many free-to-air receivers on the market - you don't need a subscription to a pay-TV service.
There appear to be many Electronic Programme Guide providers, such as tvtv. That's not a recommendation, just one I found. The receiver should say which service it works with. You don't *need* an EPG but without one you would have to tune in the services yourself. See

Some of the SD services like RTL Deutschland want a yearly payment for their HD services, branded 'HD+'. It appears that 'HD+'-branded receivers come with an HD+ decryption card with a year's subscription, the renewal fee is currently €50. This is a standard CI+ card so it should be possible to add one to a standard receiver later, should you decide to.
The analogue transmissions will be replaced by additional HD channels from ARD and ZDF. Their main services are already available in HD, at no charge. Patrick WaltersThursday 30 August 2012 5:17PM
Norwich For the last couple of days I have been getting poor signals on all TV channels from your Tacolneston transmitter when, beforehand, the signals were excellent. I live only 18 km from this transmitter and my tv is correctly tuned.
Please let me know if there is any work going on there which would account for this problem.

Calley: You should be able to receive "Freesat" in this area of Germany. I would have have this checked out by a local installer making sure that there are no obvious local line of sight issues first. I would go for one of the "Humax" boxes as these have very sensitive tuners. You may get away with a 60cm dish, but I suspect an 80cm will be required.
The receiver can be obtained and shipped to you from the likes of Amazon or possibly some other UK outlet.
P.S. Friends, near the French/Swiss border have good reception on a 60cm dish, but with s new satellite coming into play, that will have a more focused fixed beam over the UK, I would opt for the larger 80cm dish if you can.lynnSaturday 2 February 2013 9:20AM

For reception of UK channels via FreeSat, research future footprints on dedicated websites. As Les Nicol says, new Astra narrow beams will only be receivable on larger dishes - greater than 90cm in some parts of the Continent. Assuming you don't need subscription channels (trickier), any quality FTA satellite receiver will work with a dish of sufficient diameter. updates
