Briantist quote

Jonny: The Magic Eye device will only work on a one-to-one basis. You can plug a single magic eye using a single RF cable to the RF2 output.
If you have a loft distribution amplifier
to other rooms & send one coaxial feed from RF 2 o/p of the Sky Box to the input of the loft box combined with the TV aerial feed . I just think the best way to control the Sky Box is using the Marmitek Pyramid. You can have as many senders from the rooms of each TV to the one Pyramid controller at the Sky Box.The Sky remote works with the Pyramid controller. Also if you have your DVD player in the same stack as your Sky Box you can controll the DVD with its own remote from your bedroom as well. Now thats luxury?

Using a standard Sky mini-dish with a quad LNB, in the Greater London area with uninterupted site-lines to 28deg East, what signal strength and quality would one typically expect to see on the Sky+ Box signal test page?

Mine is all over the place at times but generally about 60% on strength & 50%-60% on quality - although generally LNB 2 is slightly lower than LNB 1. Over the past couple of evenings there have been momentary signal outages but there have been heavy rain showers.

Please can you help me? I recently put a small tv in my kitchen.I was only wanting Freeview but my electrician has ran a wire ie tv point cable to the lounge. It was sitting coiled up waiting to be connected. So i put a RF OUTPUT THINGY on it. Plugged it into the back of the sky box at the RF2 POINT. I then checked tv in kitchen. I am getting a picture but not a very good on- its all fuzzy Any ideas?

Karen McKinlay: It could be that the channel being used for the RF output on the Sky box is clashing with another broadcast channel, that is "if" you are using the Sky box to feed other analogue channels through to the kitchen TV.

Try changing the Sky boxes RF output to another channel a few away from where it is presently set for, carry this out as per instructions shown at the top of the page, I would have advised you on a suitable channel but cant, as you haven't mentioned where you are located.

I am also not sure what you mean by "freeview"? as what you are doing is not connected with that, unless of course you are just meaning non Sky subscription satellite channels.

Karen McKinlay: Forgot to add, that once you have changed the Sky boxes RF output to another channel remember to follow that action by carrying out a rescan on the TV to enable the new channel number to be received.

Hi i have my sky box down stairs with a rf out to a TV upstairs,i`ve just bought a lg with built in Freeview which needs an aerial, where do i plug my aerial coax into the TV upstairs as i already have the skylink in the aerial socket, any help please
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 22 June 2011 2:37PM
Gerry: The SkyLink system is designed for you to plug the aerial connection into the Sky box's aerial input (e.g. RF IN). The Sky box does not actually use the input, it adds its modulated output to the rest of the signals picked up by the aerial.

Otherwise, you can use a splitter in reverse as a combiner.

Hi Brian / jb38 with respect to my issue with the antiference remotelink 4-room amp and my sky hd box, I tried your suggestion jb and can use one feed direct into my rf2 and change channels fine from that room. My thoughts were that the antiference box had stopped working so I bought a new one. Again perfect picture on all 4 tellys feeding from it but still cant change the channel or control the box from anywhere other than the room with the sky box in it. magic eyes all still blink at each telly but dont change the channel. aaargh

i live in an apartment and i am a sky HD subscriber and our signal works off a communal dish. I have a freeview tv in the bedroom and would like to know if i can feed a cable from the HD box to our tv and watch different channels to what's been viewed on the main tv. Unfortunately, an indoor aerial does not work despite the fact we are now digital and we cannot be allowed to connect any more wires elsewhere.
jb38
Wednesday 6 July 2011 9:18PM
wayne green: No, you cant do that, as the only programme that you can get from the Sky box's RF output socket is the same as is showing on the main TV, although if deciding to that remembering to set the bedroom TV to "analogue" before tuning it to the Sky boxes RF output or you wont get anything.

As far as your indoor aerial is concerned, you "might" start to receive Freeview channels from either the 21st or 28th of September when switchover takes place at Sutton Coldfield, Brierley Hill and lastly The Wrekin.

I need help in understanding the wiring for multi room use. I recently moved my TV from one site of the roon. I had to extend the cables. Prior to the move I was able to get digital programs on all TVs (3 in total). prior to moving the TV. I have 2 cables from the satalite dish which into the two crew in pionts on the back of the shy plus box. I also have a lead coming fron the loft which I think is coming from a 2 way distruber. I think the airial goes into the 2 way input.

My TVs will now not find any digital stations.

If the cable coming from the lost is pluged into the RF2 output I get shy in all 3 rooms, but no digital TV channels.

Any help would be appreciated
jb38
Wednesday 13 July 2011 12:14PM
john: If by plugging the cable you say is coming from the loft into the Sky boxes RF2 output socket and this action results in Sky being available in other rooms, then that must be the feed to the other TV's, this also meaning that the TV's in the other rooms must be set on "analogue", as that's what the signal mode is from the Sky boxes modulator.

The only thing missing is where you have the standard aerial fed into? as the normal way of doing things is for it to be connected into the Sky boxes aerial input socket, the digital signal then passing through the Sky box and being joined by the analogue one from the Sky boxes modulator, then both signal modes going onto the sets in the other rooms via your 2 way powered (?) splitter.

If you have already had this working before you moved the equipment then nothing else would need altered, other wise I would had said to check that your Sky boxes modulator isn't clashing with one of the Freeview channels, not being able to advise channel wise as you haven't mentioned your location.

Don't forget to change the other TV's over to their digital mode when scanning!

Magic Eye Problem
I have a sky+HD box and connected to the RF2 output socket is a tvLINK 4 way signal booster. The power supply to the RF socket is ON, and is working. Connected to the booster are TV sets in another 2 locations in the house, these have magic eyes fitted and allow me to control the sky box. I recently changed one of the TV's in one of these locations and now the magic eye at that position wont control the box. I have swapped it back to the old TV and the magic eye still works fine. The LED on the eye is lit as soon as it's connected to the old TV, but when it's connected to the new one, it's not. I've retuned the RF output channel on the box, carried out analogue tuning on the new TV and I get a great picture but still no control from the magic eye. Can anyone suggest what I do next please!

I am happy to update the cables to achieve this.

I know that my RF2 is powered on the Shy plus box

Help by some of you would be very much appreciated.

Alan: Just a little question on your problem, when you say that the LED doesnt light up when connected to the new TV, does that also apply if the set isnt actually switched on?
Alan
Friday 15 July 2011 8:19PM
jb38: The LED doesn't illuminate at all when its connected to the new TV, wether the set is switched on or not. On the old TV the LED is illuminated all the time.
jb38
Friday 15 July 2011 9:59PM
Alan: I would now like you to try swapping this particular eye over with one of the others that you use, this is to eliminate the possibility of this one having a fault that is possibly not showing up on the old TV.

Nothing should really knock the LED out except a plug or cable short circuit, this being the aspect that is somewhat puzzling. I take it that you have checked that when that particular LED goes out the ones in the other room are still on? (question only applies if you are NOT using a separate power supply for the booster)

I did also mean to add to my other posting to see if the LED still went out when the new TV was unplugged completely from everything, leaving only the aerial connection to the eye.

Regarding the magic eyes, what make/model are the ones you are using?

Alan
Saturday 16 July 2011 11:33AM
jb38: The signal booster I'm using is a tvLINK T140 and I'm not using a separate power supply for it. The magic eyes are tvLINKS.
I swapped the links over. The 'non working' one worked ok in a different location, LED was showing. The 'proved to be working' one didn't work in the faulty location. The LED didn't illuminate when it was connected to the TV wether the power was on or not. When this one is connected the other links LED's are illuminated.
Do you think I'm dealing with a short circuit situation on the cable/plugs to this partucular location? If that's the case I cant understand why the link works ok when it's connected to the old TV.
jb38
Saturday 16 July 2011 2:08PM
Alan: Basically yes, as I suspect that the DC voltage from the Sky box that operates the LED is passing through that particular type of magic eye you are using along with the signal that the TV receives, then is being shorted out by the type of input circuit used in your new TV, in other words it not having a blocking capacitor from the centre pin behind the socket.

Pity you don't have a simple test meter as this could be verified, but "if" this is happening then although not being a 100% accurate test as cable lengths etc can upset the result, but if the magic eye connected to the offending TV isn't illuminated because the TV is shorting the DC supply, then the magic eyes on the other sets should also have gone out at the same time as the one in question.

Magic eyes can be notoriously troublesome, as to be quite honest about it their circuitry is such that they just work and no more at the best of times with the slightest thing upsetting their operation, although this usually involving them not responding to commands etc and not the light gong out except by plug or cable shorts, these two things not really applying in your case.

hi

i have decided to run sky to the bedroom from the downstairs sky plus box, however i have connected the cable into the rf2 out socket then into the back of the telly upstairs i have also been into the sky settings and swtched the rf power to on (rf channel also says 68) then i go upstairs and search channels on analog search where i get nothing, it scans right through and doesnt find anything. i have also tried manual scan and find nothing...

please can you help

thankyou

johnny

1st try rf one then retune

(rf2 might be out)

2nd take the aerial out of the aerial input on the sky box and retune upstairs tv

3rd join the 2 cables behind the box together and see if the pictures return upstairs

might be something wrong with the cable you have installed

have you got a tv link (magic eye) upstairs if you have turned the power on for the rf output is the light on.

Last of all the channel 68 you looked at try moving it down to say 36 it may be over lapping another channel

best of luck

hi ian,

thanks for ur earlier comments. i have managed to get a picture now after checking over the wire and giving more of the copper core in the connectors, anyway like i say i have a picture now but it is NOT very good quality at all, quite fuzzy to be honest. i have retuned a couple of times using whilst changing the RF number each time, first it was at 36 like u suggested then i tuned again back at 68, still a fuzzy picture though... any suggestions? my post code is de4 3ee if that helps.

thanks again..

I wonder if you can help. This week9 I had a new amstrad 250 gb sky hd box delivered free to replace an older Thomson box. I have a second TV in another room about 15m away and use a magic eye to control the sky box. With this newer box I am struggling to control the sky box. The signal from the magic eye is slow and often wont wrok. The red light is on tried channel change etc ...no good. Is there way I can boost this connection ?H Could this be a problem with the 9v on the new box? Any ideas would be most helpful. many thanks

I bought a HD,tv because it had a usb.input that I intended to use to record some TV,the usb will only record when usb/dtv is sourced and I have found will only function when an ariel is used. My postcode BT20. is not digital until 2012 so I am using a satalite dish Is there a way I can use RF out on my decoder to solve this problem or do I have to wait untiL 2012. Thanks
jb38
Tuesday 19 July 2011 3:28PM
andrew: Basically no! as although terrestrial digital signals can pass through the sky boxes (or whatever) RF in/out sockets this doesn't extend to the RF signal generated within the actual box, as its purely analogue.
jb38
Tuesday 19 July 2011 4:20PM
johnny: I would do as ian has suggested and leave the Sky boxes RF output channel on Ch36, as this appears to be a free channel as far as DTT transmissions covering your area are concerned.

You haven't actually confirmed what ian had asked, insomuch whether or not you are using a magic eye? as if not use the Sky boxes RF1 output and turn off the power to RF2, as this isn't required.

Although this might well be an inconvenience to do, but I would temporarily place the upstairs TV near to the Sky box and link the TV to the Sky boxes RF1 with a jumper lead, as this will show instantly if the Sky box is giving out a good quality picture, which it should do!

If that's OK, then take the set upstairs and plug the aerial back into it again whilst still on the Sky boxes RF1, this confirming (or not) if your cable / connections are OK.

"If" you are using a magic eye, then place it back in line with the TV and change the RF1 back over to RF2, switching the power back on for same, any inferior picture seen after doing so then being pin pointed to the magic eye link arrangement.
jb38
Tuesday 19 July 2011 5:18PM
David: You are not on your own regarding having this type of problem with your new Amstrad Sky HD box, as its a well known problem caused by the box being much more critical in operation, in other words the magic eye detecting circuitry just works and no more, and I am unaware of any devices that can enhance the operation of the magic eye in the way you have asked.

For a test, I would first of all cover the IR sensor on the Amstrad to make sure that it "doesn't" respond to the remote commands, once satisfied the sensor is blanked out, then couple the magic eye directly into the Amstrad box and try changing channels, if this is OK then the box is being affected by the cable run, so should you use wall plates make sure that the plugs are screwed in tightly.

However on the other hand, if its not OK then about the only thing you can do is to purchase a different brand of magic eye, or even make a complaint to whoever sent the box, as to reiterate this "is" a known problem with some people even replacing their co-ax with top quality types to try and help overcome the difficulty, which in simple terms is through the bad design of this part of the circuitry.

Do i need second sky box to watch sky tv on
a new tv set in the bedroom independent of the main set downstairs. New set is all set up for hdmi 1. Hope you can help thankyou
jb38
Thursday 21 July 2011 4:16PM
mal: Yes, you require a second box to do what you want, plus a second subscription if its Sky movies etc you wish to view.

However, it is possible to view Sky non-subscription channels, as all that's required is to pick up and old Sky box and wire it to a second port on the LNB, should it have one! if not they can be purchased for under £10.00 or so and are simplicity to install.

jb38: Checked the connections at each end of the suspect cable run, all found to be ok. Magic eye tried again, still not wanting to peform. Noted your comments re the Magic Eyes just working and no more so purchased a Marmitek Powermid XL, connect up, and it worked first time so I'll be sticking with it thank you very much!
Thanks for all your help with this problem.
jb38
Thursday 21 July 2011 9:32PM
Alan: Thanks for the update, and pleased to hear you have rectified the problem as I was wondering how you got on, albeit your cure involved going upmarket and using RF means to link the devices together.

I would though have been interested in knowing the brand / model of TV that the eye had a problem with, this for purposes of checking its aerial input circuit, as I still suspect that the eye being used was passing DC which was being shorted out by that particular TV's aerial input circuitry appearing as a short to DC.

Anyway that's in the past now you are using the Powermid XL, although "if" you experience any odd problems now and again with these beware of devices such as "some" cordless door bells or car door security keys of the RF variety, as they operate only a stones throw away from the frequency used by the Powermid's.

simon: Check that you have used the RF2 output and that the "RF outlet power supply" is on, as at the top of the page.

Also ensure that there is only one device connected via the Magic Eye link, and if there is you should check there is no short in the cable to the set.

I have just connected cable into RF2 and switched on in sky settings and connected it to magic eye on new samsung 32" tv in bedroom - picked up on analogue perfectly and works great. cannot pick up any built in freeview channels now when i switch source to digital. what do i need connector wise to put both into same tv. I have digital aerial in attic for other tv's in house?
jb38
Sunday 7 August 2011 8:11PM
Mark: This will likely be because you have not plugged the Freeview aerial into the Sky boxes aerial input socket, as this will pass through the Sky box picking up the Sky boxes modulators analogue signal in the process, then feeding both analogue and digital signals to your various TV's.

Of course I take it you have ensured that the Sky boxes RF output signal isn't going to clash with any of the digital channels you are receiving? unable to advise on this as you haven't given your post code.

Hi there

I have Sky+ HD in my lounge with an RF feed up to the bedroom connected via a Magic Eye

For some reason when I woke this morning the Sky picture is very fuzzy (channel 6 on the analogue) whilst channels 1-5 are clear.

I've had messages about auto retuning the tv due to changes etc which have been done but didnt think this would affect the Sky picture upstairs??

Any help REALLY appreciated
Colin
Wednesday 17 August 2011 6:23PM
oh, just seen that the Tacelston transmitter had a change this morning at 6am which would affect me.

Would that mean I need to retune sky output (or something else) at all??
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 17 August 2011 6:51PM
Colin: Yes, probably you would need to retune the Sky box output. It's probable that it is now on or adjacent to a channel being used for digital TV.

The moves were: Mux B from C58 to C66; Mux C from C61 to C68. These changes were made to avoid interference from high-power services from the Waltham transmitter.

You may have to do this again when Tacolneston switches over in November. Obviously the other five channels will disappear then because all analogue is switched off, with digital services starting up in place of three of them.

I would recommend using a frequency at the low end of the range somewhere between 21 and 30, so it avoids Tacolneston completely.

I have just set up Philex SLx4B (27875R) and distribute to 3 bedroom tv's from my Sky HD amstrad box. It has worked reasonably well since I set up 2 months ago albeit the sky picture quality was just about viewable but the freeview channels were good. Yesterday evening the sky channel quality was unviewable. This seemed to coincide with a message on the screens to retune the tv's at the end of August. I checked all the connections, replaced leads between rf2 and amplifier but no improvement. I rechecked sky box and altered rf2 channel from 35 to 30 to see if this made a diffence, retuned all televisions but no improvement. Postcode is cb4 2pa. Do the experts on here think the problem is with the output of rf2 from the sky box. In reading this thread it seems that the Amstrad box isn't the best for the magic eye operation. Can I test the rf2 with multimeter and is it 9v I should be getting. Any help much appreciated.

Thursday 18 August 2011 8:26PM
Hi, my inlaws have been effected by the Tacolneston issue mentioned above. However, after reading the above advice about changing the RF output we cannot access the parts of the menu screens to change it. There is no facility within any menu to access RF OUTPUT?
We are wondering if this is because the Thomson Skybox is at least 10 years old and so old it does not have the technology within to deal with this issue?
jb38
Thursday 18 August 2011 9:02PM
kuffman: Are you sure you are not hesitating when pressing the sequence?, as after pressing services the "4-0-1-select" has to be done as an even consecutive action with no hesitations between any of the actions or it wont work, so dont look at the screen whilst carrying it out.
