How do I change the RF output channel on a Sky Digibox?

How do I change the RF output channel on a Sky Digibox?

Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Then press [4] to go to the RF output menu.

You can now change the value so that it does not clash with an analogue TV channel or a Freeview multiplex.

HD and "new EPG" boxes

If you have a HD box, press [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]. Nothing is shown on the TV screen until you press the Select button.

Then use the [RIGHT] arrow button on the remote until this screen is shown, and press SELECT to change the values:

Our TV link is connected to the 2nd sky HD box in a bedroom, however when we use the remote this also changes the 1st sky HD box located in the lounge. What do I need to change so that the downstairs box isn't affected by the remote usage upstairs?

Andy: Don't connect the aerial into the "RF in" on the first box - bypass the box if you don't want to change channels on it.

johnmc: What's the model number of the Toshiba? I will see if I can find a user manual for it, in order to answer your question.

Hi Dave the T.V is a TOSHIBA LCD REGZA SRS HD READY MODEL No Nr 32C3035D
Dave Lindsay
Sunday 3 June 2012 12:13PM
johnmc: I've been unable to find a manual for this exact model. However, I wonder if you need to press the button that allows you to select different inputs (scart inputs, PC etc). It may be a circle with an arrow pointing in.

The analogue TV part may be (on the list that appears on the screen) "ATV" or something similar.

I suggest that you tune the Sky box to programme number 1 (formerly used for BBC One analogue).

Hi Dave how do i tune my Sky box to programme number 1 dont understand that i have tried selecting different inputs still no sky. which RF Channel No would you use
jb38
Sunday 3 June 2012 4:31PM
johnmc: That model of TV is a dual standard type with an analogue tuner as well as a Freeview one, but as was mentioned by Dave Lindsay has to be set on analogue to be able to pick up the Sky boxes RF modulator, the analogue mode being selected by pressing the button that's usually located underneath No (9) button on the remote control, likewise pressing it again when you want to return to Freeview.

If though this is a new installation then you will have to go into the Toshiba's analogue tuning menu and carry out a channel scan to enable the Toshiba to find the Sky boxes RF output automatically, then once done you can allocate the Sky boxes position "on the TV" to programme position (1) or indeed any position you wish.

The only point I wondered about being, that when you had said that the magic eye worked on the downstairs TV was this just for a test as its intended to be used on the 32C3035D?

I have tv aerial sockets in most rooms although I do not have an external aerial. I have sky HD and a sky + multiroom. Can I connect these to other rooms via the aerial sockets. Do I need a booster.
Stephen P
Monday 4 June 2012 2:24PM
bob - depends what (if anything) the sockets are connected to!

A common system will have a double socket in the main room; one to the aerial and the other on to the other rooms.

If you open the sockets the wiring may give you a clue!

Monday 4 June 2012 5:14PM
Bob: Plus just to add, that it also depends on the grade of cable that has been used to interconnect the various aerial sockets and whether or not any of them terminates on a wall plate that is electrically isolated, as that would block a satellite dishes LNB control voltages.

All satellite boxes whether Sky or Freesat sends commands in the form of two voltages back to the dishes LNB for polarity switching purposes.

I send my sky tv from the main hd box in the lounge to 3 other tvs in the house though rf out / booster etc.
This has worked fine until the second wave of digital switchover today (I retuned all tvs digital channels as needed).

Rf outlets settings currently on channell 44.

I'm sure I don't need new equipment or needto pay call out fees for a specialist and just need to retune sky box but can anyone explain exactly whaypt I need to do ?

Help much appreciated as have a house full of kids going mad already !

Stuart heynes: This is a bit of a riddle as I can't understand what the problem is.

There are a number of possibilities:

1. If you've retuned the TVs, then perhaps you've only retuned the digital side of them. Having reset them, maybe it wiped the memory for analogue channels. What each does probably varies by design.

The objective of this first stage is to tune the TVs to the Sky box. Don't change the RF out channel on the Sky box.

What I would do is put the Sky box on analogue programme number 1 on each of the TVs. That is where you used to have BBC One analogue.

2. There is the possibility that one of the new digital signals in your area use C44 or adjacent channels which now makes it unuseable and therefore you will have to change the RF out on your Sky box.

You have asked about retuning the Sky box, so I am wondering if you have carried out number 1 above.

Without knowing where you are, it isn't possible to work out whether this might be the case and which channel might be a good replacement.

I presume that the aerial feeds into the Sky box and then back out again to the other TVs. If there is a digital (Freeview) signal now on C44, this will cause interference on the analogue picture, as you might expect; it will appear grainy.

Try removing the incoming aerial lead to the Sky box. Then have the Sky box powered on and go to one of your TVs and attempt to tune in the analogue part. If there is manual tuning, then tune to C44. You may also look to see if the Sky box is still stored on the TV (in the analogue part), e.g. on number 6. Having got the output of the Sky box on the screen (via the RF feed), go back to the Sky box and plug the incoming aerial lead in. If plugging the lead in causes the picture to go grainy then you know that their is a digital signal coming down the aerial lead on C44 (or adjacent channels). If this is the case, then provide your location, preferably in the form of a post code or nearby post code (e.g. a shop) and we will see if we can work out what channel might be best for you to use.

I have retuned my tv with the sky eye fitted to it ,I USED TO GET SKY ON CHANNEL NO. 8 BUT NOW THAT i HAVE RETUNED THE TELE i CAN'T GET CHANNEL 8.Can you tell me how to set it back to no.8
Lesley
Friday 15 June 2012 11:06AM
I don't know if my first message was clear!! but the tele that I use in another room from the sky box (which has the eye box fitted to)I had to retune the tele cause of this change over. Before I used to get the sky on no.8 but now I press no 8 on the remote control it won't keep on it so now I can't get sky on the tele. Is it possible for you to tell me how I can reset it please.
Dave Lindsay
Friday 15 June 2012 11:44AM
Lesley: There is the possibility at switchover that "may" mean that you have to adjust the output of your Sky box, this being that a digital signal may have come on air on the same frequency you are using for your Sky box. This, as I say, is a possibility but you should go step by step.

If you have carried out an automatic tuning on the analogue side of the TV, the Sky box may have been put under number 1 if that is the only analogue signal to be found, as well it might. I would just leave it under analogue number 1.

Failing that, unplug the incoming aerial lead to the Sky box and then try again with tuning the TV. Then plug the aerial lead back into the Sky box. Then go back to the TV and see what the picture from the Sky box looks like. If it is snowy, then you know that there is a new digital signal coming down your aerial lead on the same frequency and you will have to change it using the instructions above.

Knowledge of your location (preferably by post code or nearby post code, such as a shop) will be helpful in working out a new channel to use, should you find that it is interfered with by a digital signal.

Obviously always ensure that the Sky box is powered on and not in standby so that it is putting out an analogue signal.

Saturday 23 June 2012 5:36PM
Gary a few things to check first there are two parts to coax inside solid core and out side brade the brade should not touch the inside that should be held back by the clamp in the plug. If your plug has a small screw remove it they can cause a short. Does the coax run direct from the sky box to the magic eye if it has an amplifier between is it a bypass amp if not the amp will have to be changed to one with a sky bypass one last thing is the power on from the receiver and is the coax in the rf2 hope this helps.

Mazbar have done as you you suggested redid my plugs got a better picture but still no red led light on my eye i have no amp or booster is a straight lead through from my sky +hd box to magic eye and yes my coax is in the rf2
Mazbar
Saturday 23 June 2012 6:52PM
Gary one last thing to try put a slight kink in the center core to make sure you get a good conection. You might also check the coax have you put it under carpet if so make sure the carpet grippers havent gone into the coax .

now have a decent picture on my 2nd tv still no led light on my sky eye and sky remote not working does any1 have any ideas please

Saturday 23 June 2012 7:58PM
Gary the only thing to do is re check all plugs, and then switch the power off to rf2 save it then switch it back on. This is what i would do at a customers house you could have something realy silly wrong, if you carnt get it to work you might have to call out someone and pay there call out charge if you do dont use a 0800 number or a local number that you think isnt right they are paid for numbers and they are not local.

gary frobisher: In addition to what Mazbar has suggested that you check, try connecting the magic eye directly into the Sky boxes RF2 output socket just to make sure that the eye is actually OK, as if it still doesn't light by doing that and you have double checked that the RF2 power is switched on, then either the eye is defective or its the Sky boxes power supply to the RF2 socket.

By the way, on the direct connection test you don't really require to connect the eye's output to anything unless you want to verify that it can change channels, although you will need to cover the front of the Sky box using a towel or similar to make sure that it doesn't pick up the remote control IR signal directly thereby by-passing the eye.

Can you help I have a second tv in kitchen attached via RF2 to play free view and sky. Free view plays perfect and the sky picture is fine but the sound is completely distorted. When I do a reset it works for a day then completely goes again. I have tried different channels as recommended but no joy. An engineer has told me it is the Tv that may be the problem but it is a brand new Lg so I am not sure. Aerial goes into sky box coax out to kitchen tv. I also use a tv link but I changed this to ensure it wasn't this. Any thoughts. Thanks

i have a sky digibox my 2nd tv has bult in freeview i have changed sky settings to channel 68 and rf outlet power supply to on but have no sound
jb38
Sunday 1 July 2012 4:51PM
tony: No sound on what? are you meaning when on Freeview or Sky whilst on the second set? although without knowledge of your location (post code or one from nearby - a shop etc) and so unable to check, but if the sound disappeared at the same time as you set the RF output channel on the Sky box just try selecting another channel and rescan the second TV whilst its set on analogue to enable the RF2's new output channel to be found.

Apart from that I take it you are using a magic eye? by the fact of you having mentioned that you turned the RF2 power on, as if you don't have an eye then the power should be left off.
jb38
Sunday 1 July 2012 5:06PM
James: If the TV sound is also distorted whilst on Freeview then that most likely a fault within the TV, however if you are meaning that its only distorted whilst viewing Sky via the RF link then for a test try unplugging the normal aerial thats going into the Sky boxes aerial socket and have a check at the result, as it could be that the local Fenton transmitters digital signal is slightly too powerful and is causing a problem within the Sky boxes RF analogue modulator.

Further advice given dependant on the result of the test.
jb38
Sunday 1 July 2012 5:17PM
Mike: If your Sky+ box is of an HD type (as both SD & HD types exist) then you can couple it into the TV via an HDMI lead, although are you also intending to use the Freeview HD facilities on the Samsung TV? as if you are then a normal aerial will be required as the LNB's spare output ports are only of use if the TV is also Freesat capable, as indeed many are.

Thanks JB38, yes it is just when on sky and not all the time. For example if i change the RF channel or just switch the sky box on and off it may be ok for a few hours but then just drops out again. The picture is fine. I have tried taking the arial out the back but again seems to drop out. I have tried the different spare RF channels as recommended by post code but still no permanent success. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Monday 9 July 2012 8:17PM
malcolm: If when you say that the TV link doesnt work are you meaning the magic eye? because if its not lighting up then there has to be a broken connection, as the LED in the eye uses pure DC voltage from the Sky boxes RF2.

Tuesday 10 July 2012 9:17PM
malcolm: If you are using the standard RF2 output from the Sky HD box its virtually impossible not to have any audio unless its caused by something connected with the 2nd TV you are using, as the analogue RF video and audio signal from the Sky box cannot be separated insomuch that if something goes wrong both will stop working.

Are you positive that the audio on the TV hasn't been muted or even just turned down?

JB 38 , i have retuned my 2nd tv using the first installation setting and i now have sound and vision , great . I then tried to set up the commtel satellite tv digital link but i cant get the red light on !! i took the 2nd tv up to the house and over a much shorter connection the red light comes on ! i am assuming that the failure to get it to work in the summerhouse could be due to the distance away from the house ..... about 30 metres and i have read that this COMMTEL producthas a max rang of 30 metres ( it has however worked before in the summer house !!)is there anything i can do ?
Ever in hope

malcolm: Provided that you have a "direct" cable link (no wall plate unless a straight through type) between the Sky boxes RF2 output and the input to the magic eye then unfortunately there isn't really anything that you can do about the red light situation except by trying a different brand of eye, as to be perfectly honest about it many of these devices just work and no more at the best of times, and indeed even if you were armed with a few of these Commtell types you would most likely find that some worked better than others as they are just erratic devices, the erratic element really being revealed when used in long cable length situations.

Although it has to be said that its not just the case of them being extremely sensitive to cable lengths but also the quality of the cable used between both devices, so this is another factor that has to be taken into account.

That said though, you are not by any means alone as far as experiencing this type of difficulty is concerned and the problem is not always just caused by the sensitivity of the eye or type of cable used for the link, because many people who had been successfully using a eye with a standard Sky box for a few years suddenly found that the eye would not work when they upgraded to Sky+, as the circuitry used in these + boxes for the eye simply wasn't up to the standard of the older boxes, and there was even complaints from some regarding the RF modulators being somewhat weaker as well, this resulting in a slightly grainy picture being seen whereas before upgrading it was perfect.

I don't know if you had maybe just upgraded to Sky and still have your old box stored away, but if you have then purely for a test connect the mains lead into it and the cable link into its RF2 and check if the eye in the summer house lights up, as that would at least verify the continuity of the cable as far as DC is concerned.

I regret not being able to be more positive about my reply, but the only thing that anyone can do in your type of situation is to try a different brand of eye "if" they know that the cable connection is sound between both devices, as although RF can pass through a bad connection with only a slight grain showing on the picture, but the 9 volts or so that operates the eye wont!

JB38..... Thanks for your reply , looks like i am a bit stuffed !
cable quality should be fine as i bought it off a professional firm who fitted me a couple of aerials .
got a new sky + box about 6 mths ago ... got rid of the old one !
i will try a different brand and check connections but iam not very hopeful .
i am also reluctant to get an enginner to have a look in view of your comments plus it will cost me £50 with no guarantee of success .
Anyway i really appreciate your input .

JAMES: No, avoid Ch42 as thats used for the SDN mux (ITV3 etc) by the high powered Sutton Coldfield transmitter, and on checking the various stations that you are predicted as being able to receive (in theory anyway!)Ch63 upwards looks to be the best range to use for the boxes RF output.
