I will soon be coming to the North Sea (66° North) on a ship for a number of months and would like to know if you knew of the UK/North European satellite TV footprints at this latitude.
I have all of the external equipment I will need, i.e. gyroscopic satellite dome etc and know I would need to update the LNB to work in Europe.
I realise also that I will need to purchase a decoder box.
I notice that the UK currently supplies "FreeSat". Does this footprint extend to the North Sea at such a latitude? Would I be better exploring Norwegian options (as I will actually be closer to Norway than the UK.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated.
Thanks.

We were away on holiday in Feb and March and when we returned we found that we could no longer receive ITV1, and ITV2 plus Channels 4 and 5, all other freeview channels are o.k. We have tried re-tunning our box but this has not helped. We live in the Oxford area, do not know what 'Your sites URL' means so have left that blank.

Matt: You are using the Bath transmitter - www.ukfree.tv link icon Bath digital TV transmitter | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

This transmitter is a "public service" transmitter and does not carry the commercial multiplexes, as the owners did not elect to extend their services beyond the existing 81 transmitters www.ukfree.tv link icon Where are the public service (Freeview Light) transmitters? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

You might, however, be able to change your aerial and point it at the main Mendip transmitter, where all the services are provided.

Also, Freeview HD is provided from Bath (and Mendip), should you wish to upgrade to HD.

John Alexander: *Freeview* refers to digital transmissions from transmitting aerials on the ground (terrestrial), and these don't travel well enough to be usable more than 100km from the transmitter.

Free-to-air transmissions from the BBC and ITV use a satellite whose 'footprint' is tightly-focused on the UK - see www.ses-astra.com link icon ASTRA 2D - SES ASTRA . You may still be able to receive them if you have a large satellite dish. Any DVB-S compatible box should be able to receive them, but full Red Button service might only be available from a UK box. Look for Freesat equipment. (RG47SH)

Saturday 26 November 2011 11:48PM
martin: I believe those transmitters are low power relays. You might try pointing your aerial towards Sandy Heath North West of you. Otherwise the London transmitter. Sandy is 56km away but it is a main transmitter in the region of a Megawatt I think. The problem around Princes Risborough is all them Chiltern Hills. Hope it helps,I spent many years around that area trying to get decent pictures in the analogue era.

martin: The Digital UK postcode checker predicts that you should have good reception on all muxes from Oxford aerial pointing W-WNW set for horizontal polarisation, or as John suggested above try Sandy Heath, aerial pointing NE, also horizontal polarisation. Note that the COM muxes from Oxford are transmitted at reduced power until 18th April 2012, SDN from Sandy Heath will change frequency and increase power on 9th May 2012.

I just got a digital tv with built in freeview. It worked fine at my friends place, but here it does not get any channels. Tells me to check aerial. I dont get it. It was working 8 miles away, but not here. What to do. There is an antenna on the roof of the building and a satelite dish. Se185ql thanks in advance

ivan: I can see one possible reason for the problem, that of an excessively high powered signal blocking the tuner as you are only 7 miles away from the transmitter and as you say using a roof mounted aerial.

If you have a set top aerial to hand try a re-tune with that plugged into your TV, or even just try a short piece of copper wire (about 12") pushed into the inner cup of the aerial socket.

Sunday 22 April 2012 11:49AM
Fleming Campbell: The Digital UK postcode checker predicts that you will only be able to receive transmissions from the Londonderry relay. This should give excellent reception on your existing aerial, but only on the PSB muxes as this transmitter is a Freeview light service which, due to economic constraints, is not planned to carry the COM muxes. The reception prediction does not take into account any Saorview services which might be available from the Republic, or the additional Northern Ireland Mini Multiplex.

Please inform me in which geographical direction is Moel y Park transmitter from
No 35,CH64 6TF
so that I may position my aerial correctly?
I suspect that it is about 160* from North.

Does the height of the aerial have any significance on signal strength?

Does aereial position also apply to radio signals?

Hello; I'm in a bit of a valley east of Bath; the maps show no green coverage either from Mendip or Bath, confirmed in that we could not receive any analogue signal prior to switch-over. Also, I'm not allowed to install an aerial externally! Would a high-gain loft aerial have any chance?

We live in an apartment block which has a history of poor reception at certain times of the day, very often in the early evening, much work has been undertaken by a competent arial installer without success, are we located in a poor reception spot? Is there sufficient power available at the transmitter at that time of day?
How do we find the answer to these questions or any other that may be the cause of our problem?

K

Edwin Raymen: To be able to give any advice based on the predicted reception it is necessary to know your location, preferably a postcode for your block or a nearby shop. You say that reception is poor in the early evening, is that all the year round, or does the problem time change to coincide with nightfall? Transmitters normally radiate at full power at all times, unless engineering work is taking place, in which case full power working normally resumes at the end of the engineers' working day which is typically between 4pm and 6pm. The exception to this is when antenna work demands that reduced power is maintained for the duration of the work. Has your aerial installer been on site at the time that the reception problem is encountered? Also does the problem affect all channels or just those on one particular multiplex?
M
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 7 November 2012 5:34PM Stamford
Edwin Raymen: reception often does change over the course of the day, if it's marginal. (Either just above the signal-to-noise ratio required, or just below the point where too much intermodulation is occurring.) It's all to do with temperature and humidity, which affect how the signal travels, and also temperature of layers in the upper atmosphere, which in the right (wrong) conditions can bring in distant interfering stations.

Looking at Digital UK's prediction for the PE9 1DW postcode (which you put in the 'Your site' box) I see that there are three transmitters covering your area strongly, and two providing variable coverage. It may be that your equipment isn't tuning into the transmitter that the (presumably communal) aerial is pointing at. Many receivers just store the first services they find, when scanning from lowest to highest frequencies, which aren't necessarily the best quality versions. You could try retuning manually to see if you get better results from a different transmitter.

If you traditionally got ITV Central East/BBC East Midlands on analogue, your transmitter should be either Stamford or Waltham. If you got ITV Anglia/BBC Look East it should have been Sandy Heath, which is expected to give much better results than Tacolneston. There's a chance that you're now getting ITV Yorkshire East/BBC Yorks & Lincs from Belmont, which is predicted to be the worst option.

You could ask the aerial installer which transmitter the aerial is actually pointing at, and see if he can help you tune your equipment to the right frequencies. Alternatively, click the transmitter name links in the paragraph above to see the UHF channel numbers to try for each transmitter.
M
Mike Dimmick
Wednesday 7 November 2012 5:59PM
Edwin Raymen: Do note that even if you're tuned into the correct transmitter, it could still be down to *too much* signal rather than too little. The three best transmitters all show 99-100% coverage for the three PSB services, and Waltham shows 96-99% for the COM muxes, while Sandy Heath's figures are over 85%.

Hi, I live in Ashford Kent, my wife is French.
I recently purchased a new Panasonic TV and during set up - in addition to UK channels I got 3 French Channels including TF1 which my wife would love to be able to watch. However on a channel update the French programs have disappeared. I tried using a booster but no luck. On what channels should I try to find French TV? any suggestions as to how I might be able to get again the excellent signal I briefly had? Thank you, Bryan
Dave Lindsay
Tuesday 12 March 2013 6:47PM
Bryan: First and foremost, reception may be hit and miss. Sometimes it may be interference from another transmitter(s) in the UK.

What you should have done was bring up the signal strength screen and observe which UHF channel it was coming in on.

I can't vouch for how up-to-date this is:

www.aerialsandtv.com link icon Rowridge Transmitter

However, it gives you the locations of the main transmitters along France's north coast.

The full list of transmitters in France is here:

tvignaud.pagesperso-orange.fr link icon http://tvignaud.pagespers….pdf

TF1 HD is carried on "R5" multiplex, along with two other services.

TF1 standard definition is carried on R6, along with five other services, one of which is encrypted.

The Boulogne transmitter broadcasts R5 on C44 and R6 on C37.

Dunkirk's R5 is on C31 and R6 is on C21.

This page gives UK transmitters by channel:

www.ukfree.tv link icon C21 (474.0MHz) after switchover | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

Heathfield and Tunbridge Wells both broadcast on C44. No transmitters broadcast on C31 because 31 to 37 was cleared as part of UK switchover. They may well be used in coming years, so if you can receive C31 from Dunkirk, then it may be lost.

That said, refer to:

www.ukfree.tv link icon Ten more HD channels on two new Freeview HD multiplexes on air from 2014-18 | Freeview news | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

The nearest transmitter to you pencilled in on C31 is Rowridge.

Bryan: See also www.toutelatnt link icon http://www.toutelatnt/pros/

See:

pros.toutelatnt.fr link icon http://pros.toutelatnt.fr….pdf

According to it, R5 from Boulogne is on C29.

Perhaps the PDF I linked to in the 6:47 posting is the pre-switchover one. The different and low transmission powers make me think this.

Dave, thank you for the above, at least I have an idea of which channels to look out for. However it seems all I can do is try a re tune every now and then and hope to stumble across TF1 again. Another clue to what might help me - I found I had to have my aerial directly into the TV not via a sat box or bluray tuner that is why I thought I should try a booster but this did no good at all, any thoughts?

Wednesday 13 March 2013 5:40PM
Hi again, What MHz should I be looking for for TF1?
Dave Lindsay
Wednesday 13 March 2013 7:06PM
Bryan: On the manual tune screen, enter the frequency and, if there is an indication of strength and quality, wait for them to settle (don't press the button to scan the channel just yet as on many devices the manual tune screen acts like a signal meter, before the channel is scanned).

The broadcast frequencies in MHz are:

Boulogne:

TF1HD = 538MHz (C29)
TF1 = 602MHz (C37)

Dunkirk:

TF1HD = 554MHz (C31)
TF1 = 474MHz (C21).

Bryan: One possibility is to receive French television by satellite. www.tntsat.tv

It broadcasts from 19.2 degrees east, whereas the UK services of Sky and Freesat are 28.2 degrees east, so a separate dish will be required, unfortunately.

Re the Sat option, I do have a Technomate TM5600 on Atlantic Bird 5w, I have an out of date Bis card, my card supplier was unreliable so I did not renew, and therefore lost TF1.
Would I need a new TNT box to use TNTsat?

Via my Bis card I still get France 2 + other channels so It is just TF1 I seek

By the way no luck with the DRT signals - not a flicker!
Dave Lindsay
Friday 15 March 2013 12:46PM
Bryan: I'm not a professional, so I'm just relying on what I've found online and my response is limited.

A couple of pages I read say that TF1 is (or perhaps was) encrypted on satellite and that you might require a TNT SAT receiver or card.
