Briantist: Channel 5+1 is already on Freeview on channel 44 with its 8 day EPG. It launched on Freeview before it launched on Freesat.

Briantist: Maybe DMOL are a little swamped at the moment with all that is happening and they haven't got round to 5+1 on Freeview. Ragarding your lack of signal on Mux A, the owner of a web site called UKFREE.TV is very helpfull in his advice on how to cure such problems.

Good to view the '5' stations on Freesat, do you think there is any chance of the UKTV or any kids Disney channels on Freesat very soon?

What I don't understand with the DTTV platform is that there is a smile tv2 channels and a smile tv3 channel but no smile tv1 channel.
GOLD as of today only transmits 1100-1400 Mon-Thu/1200-1400 Fri instead of 1800-2300 7 days a week. 14 hours a week on weekday afternoons only instead of 35 hours a week 7 evenings a week. What is the point in that? How many viewers and revenue will they get from that? Probably not much I'm thinking.
Home as of today only transmits 1100-1200 Fridays only. What is the point in only transmitting 1 hour once a week?
There is now a Connect channel and a Connect 1, Connect 2 and Connect 3.
Why not rename Connect as Connect 1. Then have Connect 2, Connect 3 and Connect 4. Presuming of course the board game Connect 4 isn't a Trade Mark(!).
There is a TopUp Anytime 1 and a TopUp Anytime 3. There used to be a TopUp Anytime 2 but that closed which was silly to leave TopUp Anytime 1 & 3 rather than close 3 and leave 1 & 2.
There is now a TopUp Anytime 5 & 6 which is silly.
Why not renumber 3 as 2, 5 as 3 and 6 as 4 so you have TopUp Anytime 1, 2, 3 & 4, not TopUp Anytime 1, 3, 5 & 6.
I'm sure these broadcasters/providers can't count!

David,

You said Channel 5+1 started on Freeview yesterday - what Mux is that on? Is it with the current Channel 5 Mux, or, as with 5*, %USA, on the SDN Mux?

Thank you,

Tim.

It is on 44 from Emley Moor I assume national.
Of course the mess of the program numbers order gets worse and worse on Freeview and Freesat only slightly better or maybe not both a mess.
Is Sky any better? They usualy better technicaly than these two having standard boxes and control.

This is great news! All we need now is for Channel 5 HD to be on Freesat and Freeview and then Channel 5 as a whole can be considered platform neutral. I wonder how long it will be until Channel 5's deal with Sky ends so that Channel 5 HD can be made available on Freesat?

The reply I got on Ch5 HD from Freesat was wishy washy.
From Ch5 I got that they want to be on Freesat, so I wonder if problem lies with Freesat who need to wake up.

Hi there, New to here so please bear with me.....I live in Greece and have a monthly subscription with Sky and can get the basic channels but now we have lost Chl 5, 5usa, universal etc. I normally manage to find them by manually tuning the box but cannot find any new codes. can anyone help or basically have I lost these channel forever??? Does anyone know what and why this has happened.
Look forward to your replies

Jacquie: The channel 5 channels etc used to be on the satellite Astra 2A that covers most of Europe. Because of that they were encrypted and could only be seen with a SKY receiver. These channels are now clear with no encryption and have moved to the new satellite Astra 1N and they only cover the UK. Because of the move, the 5 channels on Astra 2A have now been switched off. I doubt if you will be able to pick them up now as far away as Greece.

Probably does not matter with Freesat Dave, but certainly agree with you with Freeview.
Really can't understand them too because of iPlayer and Demand TV being pushed and the Recorders with hard drives in too.
I see no need for the +1 hour.
Only reason I can think of, but seems a bit silly, is for the big broadcasters to keep smaller rivals off Freeview.

I've just bought my Mum a new TV that has Freeview HD integral.

There doesn't seem that much that's HD though. I only see BBC HD, BBC 1 HD, ITV1 HD.

Why isn't there a Channel 4 HD, and why do Sky still seem to have the monopoly on all the HD channels?

Even Freesat only has a limited number of HD channels. Is this likely to change?
D
David
Wednesday 7 December 2011 6:19PM
Freesat has BBC1, BBC HD (thought to become BBC2 in the future), ITV1, CH4 and a Japanese News Channel.
Ch 5 want to be on Freesat but Freesat not seem to know that.
Dave Lindsay
Wednesday 7 December 2011 6:23PM
Brian Springthorpe: Channel 4 HD is broadcast from all Freeview transmitters on the same multiplex as the other HD channels. It is LCN52 except for Wales which has S4C Clirlun instead.

Are they transmitting yet?

We are expecting that Five HD might follow soon but they have annouced they have decided not to take the spare HD channel on Freeview.
Do we think they will not do HD on Freesat and remain Sky Only?
Briantist
Sunday 18 December 2011 6:00PM
David: It will depend on how much Sky are offering to keep channels exclusive to their platform.
D
David
Sunday 18 December 2011 8:45PM
So in Five HD case Sky paying them to be encrypted and on the Sky EPG only.
Who is paying Astra then in this case Sky or Five?
Briantist
Monday 19 December 2011 8:15AM
David: For these services, the transmissions are on Sky-renting transponders.
D
David
Monday 19 December 2011 9:22AM
So Sky pay the rent for Five?
Briantist
Tuesday 20 December 2011 8:19AM
David: Sky uses their "marketing budget" to provide discounted access to their platform for HD channels, as being able to claim they are "exclusive" allows Sky to sell more Sky+HD boxes with their £10 a month additional fee.

Maeve,

You may find that you are in the same position as Jacquie in Greece (see above) as the Five suite of channels have moved to the Astra 1N satellite which has a UK/Ireland focused beam.

There may be small areas of continental Europe, typically coastal areas near to the UK, which can still receive these channels but you may be out of luck.

Briantist,
I don't know if i should be asking you this ,but i would value your opinion.I can receive channel 5+1 on my digital TV on something numbered 850 which appears just above BBC 1 in the EPG.My BT Vision Box however will not find it after retuning several times.I have been told it should be on Freeview 44.Could you shed any light on this for me?
J
jb38
Wednesday 25 January 2012 3:21PM
Mick Cartwright: Although I realise that you have dedicated your question to Briantist and so I don't really wish to intrude, however in the mean time if I could just confirm something you queried insomuch that Ch5+1 is EPG44 on a BT vision box and is received on the same SDN mux as is ITV3 (10) / Quest (38) and QVC (16) and a number of other programmes, these in your case received from the main station Winter Hill.

If you do not receive ITV3 etc, etc, either on your BT Vision box then it most likely has auto tuned to the PSB only station called Long Mountain which is shown as being possible to receive at your location, which of course being a PSB only station does not have commercial muxes such as SDN that Ch5+1 uses, hence you will not see them indicated.

I suspect that your main TV has also auto-tuned to Long Mountain and that's why you are seeing Ch5+1 slightly above the BBC up in the 850 ranges, as BBC1 / ITV1 etc from the Long Mountain will have taken up the low EPG channel numbers on your TV pushing Winter Hills channels like BBC1 / ITV1 etc up to the 800 ranges, the only difference being that Winter Hill also has commercial muxes containing SDN where Ch5+1 is located.

Although I am working from memory, but BT vision boxes are somewhat limited in their Freeview facilities and I don't think they have a manual tuning facility, and should this be the case (I will check later) it makes it extremely difficult in situations such as yours as you cannot use the usual trick of taking the aerial out whilst scanning then reinserting it at a given point, as Long Mountain and Winter Hill channels are interwoven.

Hope this helps to slightly clarify the situation.

Why channel 5 Hd is not coming to freeview it is tthat it has to apply for regional licences for scotland england northern ireland and to broadcast local adds on 5HD but still coming to freesat in some time in 2012 and I here tha uktv might make some channel come to freesat also and a sports channel also and will a french company siging a deal with SES 3d channels and other sport channells and movies and maybe film4 HD due to virgin might leting film4HD go FTA on freesat not freeview or sky due to same issue as 5HD
Briantist
Wednesday 29 February 2012 12:19PM
Conor: That's simply not true. Channel 5's regional arrangements are totally a business decision and have no need for licencing (unlike those on ITV, which do for competition reasons).

Channel 5 HD can be broadcast to the entire UK with no additional licence, and this is the case with the encrypted HD service that Sky viewers can watch.

I am posting this for the benefit of those whose Freesat PVRs may be behaving oddly.

I regularly scan for changes to the channels on ASTRA/Freesat and noticed that the Freesat streams had gone from the Channel 5 transponder (10964H) again.

(This has happened before, sometime between 25/10/2012 and 31/10/2012, and the streams were restored on 02/11/2012)

A Freesat box with a single feed, tuned to that transponder will not receive Time or Date information nor update the EPG data, with obvious implications for reliable recording capability.
