Upgrading from Sky+HD to Freesat+HD

What to do if you want to stop subscribing to Sky+HD but do wish to record/pause/play free HD television.

What to do if you want to stop subscribing to Sky+HD but do wis
Published on by on UK Free TV

You might get a glossy magazine every month, but what do Sky really think of your custom?

"Give me a f**king name on a direct debit and it's mine for life,"
- www.ft.com link icon Sam Chisholm, former boss of BSkyB.

Perhaps you responded to an offer like the one blow that promised a gratis Sky+HD box (for new customers taking their first Sky+HD package) with free standard set-up

But you were so excited with the thought of a £50 M&S voucher that you didn't think to follow each of the little daggers and little stars to quite read all the terms and conditions:

www.sky.com link icon

So, your twelve months of commitment are over and, for reasons of budget (or politics) you have decided you want to keep all the features of Sky+ - live pause, high definition, extended electronic programme guide, series record, and recording two programmes at once whilst you watch another - but don't want to fork out every month on top of your TV Licence - and you still get www.ukfree.tv link icon hundreds of free TV channels

Here's what you can do.

First you need to buy a Freesat+HD box. There are many on the market, and can be bought from Argos, www.currys.co.uk link icon Currys DIGITAL, www.johnlewis.com link icon John Lewis, Comet and online at Amazon, as well as other stores.

When you use a Freesat+HD box NO SUBSCRIPTION HAS TO BE PAID. NONE. NOT A PENNY TO ANYONE.

Installing

This will take no more than ten minutes. First you will need to disconnect the Sky+HD box mains from the wall socket.

Then you will need to disconnect the cables from the back of the Sky+HD box.

Pull out the mains power connection (1), carefully unscrew the satellite dish links (2) and (3), and then take out the HDMI lead (4) to your HDTV. If you have an "surround sound" amplifier, you may also have a digital audio connection (5).

Remove the Sky+HD box and put the Freesat+HD box back in the same position.

Then reconnect the cables: the mains power cable (1) - but not to the wall just yet, screw the two satellite dish links (2) and (3) and connect the HDMI cable (4) to your HDTV. If you had one, reconnect the digital audio connection (5).

If you have an Ethernet router, you can connect it to the Freesat+HD box at this point (5).

With everything in place, turn on the mains power and power up the Freesat+HD box.

The TV screen first displays the box's logo

The first set-up screen allows you to select the TV type, widescreen mode and resolution:

Next the box checks for the satellite signal:

Then there is a check for updated software:

Then you enter your postcode and the box checks it:

The next step is a scan for channels. This takes about 30 seconds:

And that's it. You can now view channels, like 108 for BBC HD:

Or press the GUIDE button for the EPG:

And that's it.

Hi there.
I currently have no arial and am so reliant on my sat dish.
I'm currently considering buying a freesat TV (not a freesat box) and was wondering if the same cable and connector is used from the sky dish LNB to the TV as I currently have to my sky box?

Thanks for the site - i've learned a couple of things already (and i've researched this topic for my father in law previously).

hi, i'm thinking about not using my Sky+HD box anymore and to use (freesat built in on my tv). How can i still use the same LNB & the two core cable, (to one Core Connector on the tv). Is it a case of you only need to use one side for this to work..??
Briantist
Wednesday 1 June 2011 9:00AM
lee: Yes, just attach one of the two cables to the TV.
Briantist
Wednesday 1 June 2011 9:01AM
David: Yes, it is the same connection.

I have sky+ at the moment and pay my subscription to sky. I want to cancel this and go with freesat but need a box that still records (I cant live without recording. How do I do this?
Briantist

PamF: Just buy a Freesat+HD box and replace it for your Sky+ box, as detailed at the top of the page.

PamF:
Or.... give 31 days notice to Sky to terminate your TV contract with them, and pay £10 each month thereafter to receive FreeSat from Sky with a FreeSat EPG and recording facility on your Sky+ box - with no Contract commitment.

If you also have Skytalk telephone line and Sky Broadband you can keep this and continue to pay the subscriptions for these services in addition to the £10pm. If you don't have them then you may have to pay a one-off £25 fee for a FreeSat viewing card.

SKY will probably offer - as an alternative, and to keep you as a Sky customer - to remove your other Sky HD channels, leaving you with the 5 FreeSat HD free to air channels and reduce your other TV pack[s] subscription down to around £10/£11pm in total, for six months, again without a Contract commitment.... This will let you keep the Sky EPG in addition to the Sky+ recording facility. And allow you to easily switch back to Sky if you should wish. You decide.....?

I just want to thank Briantist for his nice and simple schematic of the various connections between my HD TV, the Freesat box and DVD and Video player. Most useful for an electrical idiot like me.

Hi! Can I connect more than one freesat box to my sat dish? to enable me to have a box in each room. Hope this isnt a daft question I havn't the slightest about these tech things.
Briantist

technophobe: Always happy to help.
Briantist

Bill: Yes, you can. However, you will need a quad-LNB - a package of four LNBs, fitted to the dish.

For satellite reception, there must be a single cable for each receiver connected to an LNB output.

For Freesat+ (and Sky+) where there are two receivers in the box, you need two cables and two LNB outputs.

So, a quad-LNB and cables can support four Freesat boxes, two Freesat+ boxes, or one Freesat+ and two Freesat boxes.

Hi
We have a freesat box and a HD tv. We used to be SKY customers and have a SKY+ box. Our dilima is do we use our SKY + box for our kitchen tv or do we get a new aerial to watch free view? We value your opinion.
Thanks

Anne Poultney: Your Sky+ box should act as a Freesat-from-Sky box, if you can run a separate feed from the dish to the kitchen. You will need to keep the viewing card in the box, and the recording and time-shift features will no longer work.

It needs to be an independent feed, as the box sends control signals to the dish along the cable. Each output on the LNB itself (the box at the front of the dish that the cables connect to) can be controlled independently. Splitting a cable means that the LNB either only gets control signals from one box - meaning that the other box is limited to only channels matching what the first box has selected - or it gets a mixture of signals, possibly selecting the wrong result for both boxes.

Your freesat box might have an 'LNB 1 Out' connector on it, but this has the same problem of only allowing the second box to have full control if the freesat box is in standby. Otherwise you're limited, again, to watching channels that match the settings for the channel that the freesat box is set to.

If the freesat box is a recorder, you can get the same problems when it's recording two programmes when in standby.

There is a slightly different range of channels on Freesat-from-Sky compared to Freeview. See the comparison at www.ukfree.tv link icon Compare Freeview and Freesat-from-Sky TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

If you provide a full postcode, we can see if Freeview is likely to provide a full service.

I've given Sky 31 days notice and I am looking at what to do after Sky.

I want to be able to record, pause and rewind, also I would like to be able to keep the feed to the bedroom with the abilty to use the remote Eye control and still use the Sky Gnome.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I cancelled my Sky account and now (of course) cannot record, live pause, etc with my Sky box but can still receive most stations (of course).
Clicking though Services, I stumbled across Anytime. I recall hearing about this but never used it. I selected "activate" but now fear I've accidentally reactivated resubscribed to Sky! I still have our old card in the slot in order to pick up some channels.
Can I get Anytime on my Sky box for free?
Briantist
Sunday 5 June 2011 1:53PM
jamie: Sky Anytime is only provided to Sky subscribers as it records a selection of subscription programmes automatically.
Briantist
Sunday 5 June 2011 1:55PM
Doug Balmer: Please see the above article.

You have two options, either buy an "RF modulator" such as www.maplin.co.uk link icon
Programmable Universal Modulator : AV Accessories : Maplin
or, run a satellite-grade cable from one of the spare LNB outputs on the dish to your other TV set, and use your old Sky+ box to watch (only) Freesat-from-Sky programmes.

Sunday 5 June 2011 10:35PM
Thanks Briantist, the advice is apprecated.
Can I ask if I opt to keep the Sky+ HD box and pay Sky £10.00 a month, I will get Sky Freesat only plus the pause, rewind, record and the Gnome facilities.
Briantist
Monday 6 June 2011 2:12PM
Doug Balmer: Yes, £10 a month gets you play/record/pause.
Strathearn
Monday 6 June 2011 3:27PM
Doug Balmer: Be AWARE that as from the day you switch to FreeSat-from-SKY then your existing recordings on your SKY+ box WILL NOT be accessible. To keep any, you need to start copying them now....

Hi,

We currently can't receive digital channels through our TV antenna in our area (HP12 4LG) so we currently have Sky+ - If I purchase a Freesat box for upstairs and just connect another cable to the Sky dish and we'll get the free to view digital channels??

Thanks
Briantist
Monday 6 June 2011 9:25PM
Mal Deay: No. If you want another receiver, get a FreeSAT box and attach it directly to one of the spare outputs of your dish's quad LNB.

I had a look at a Panasonic Freesat box today - liked the idea of it having a builtin CD/DVD player.

The salesman gave the impression that this sort of configuration was only available on Panasonic boxes.

Is he right?

Briantist
Wednesday 8 June 2011 7:47AM
Doug Balmer: Yes, I think that Panasonic are the only box makers that provide that particular configuration.

Thanks, another question, i have freeview hd on my telly built in, can i buy some sort of box that can record, pause and rewind. Ive looked at freeview boxes but i dont need the channels as i already have them on the telly
Mike Dimmick
Friday 10 June 2011 4:39PM
Penny: the recorder needs internal tuners so that it can record channels other than whatever you're currently watching. Analogue VCRs had their own tuners as well.

In practice the recorder cannot record what's being displayed by the TV, because they don't contain video compression technology. They record the raw compressed bitstream coming off-air or from the cable, then pass that through the decoder when you play back. Raw uncompressed recording would take way too much space.

ok i didnt understand all that but im presuming that means i need to get a freeview box that records for it to work then

Hi Penny,

If you on a limited budget there is only one choice & that is the Bush freeesat+ box that costs £160 from Argos, it is the best value freesat+ box on the market.
You will find more info at this web address.

I hope this is of help to you.

Hi Penny,

Sorry, my suggestion is a freesat+ box & not a freeview+ box, my mistake as this thread is originaly about satellite, The hitachi freeview+ box is good value at £90 at argos but if you can stretch to a bit more the Humax pvr 9150 £130 at argos is a very good box.

I hope this is more helpful to you.

I am going to join the world of freesat and I am confused, if I buy this below will I need to purchase the freesat box as well?

Jerry - No,- It has as it says twin "Freesat" tuners that allow you to record two different channels whilst watching another. You can also record to the Blue ray built in recorder. You will need twin feeds from the dish LNB as you would from any other "Freesat"or SKY HD plus receivers.

hi can u help me ive got a sky box i want to use it for freeview channels how do i do this what do i need ive got an indoor ariel which is up on my roof and also have scart lead cant get the freeview channels up??
Les Nicol
Friday 24 June 2011 5:55PM
Louise - You cannot connect a SKY Satellite receiver to a "Freeview" aerial. You either require to use the SKY receiver for the SkY subscription or non subscription services or have a "Freeview receiver that connects to your rooftop aerial. The latter may not be required if your television has a built in "Freevew" decoder.

Hello. I currently have Sky HD and have no intention of giving up the sports in particular :-) Can I use a 4-input LNB to additionally attach my old Sky+ box (with no card in it) to watch freeview channels in another room? In fact will the Sky+ box work with just one input? (I can use the other input elsewhere). Thanks.
jb38
Monday 27 June 2011 1:24PM
Mark: Basically yes! as each of the quad outputs are totally independent of each other, matter of fact two could be used with a Sky box and the other two with a Freesat box.

Since I'm totally dissatiesfied with Sky I want to install freesat and wonder if I need the freesat +Hd and also the freesat + HD recorder to record or rewind programmes. My TV is a Panasonic HD/LCD/TV,or do I only need the freesat +HD box?
Kim Lay
Monday 11 July 2011 2:09PM
Inge: The Freesat+HD box should give you all you want. When I dumped Sky I bought a Humax box which not only gave me all the Freesat channels but most of the remaining free to air channels as well. I can stop, rewind etc on all the Freeat channels. You shouldn't have any problems.

I have a shyplus box which has lines to two other rooms.I have a sky subscription at the moment. I would like to cancel my sub to Sky but still keep record and rewind live tv. What is the best option for me? Will the other two tvs still work in the other rooms. I have 3 Sky remotes.
Briantist
Tuesday 23 August 2011 8:12AM
Kay: The "best" thing to do is to use a Freesat+HD box on your main set, and then use two cheap Freesat boxes on your other two sets.

This will allow you to watch any channel you like on the other two sets. They will need attaching to the two spare outputs on the "quad LNB" package on the dish.

You can get an "RF modulator", or a "video sender" to allow you to share the output of a Freesat+ box as you do with Sky, but for the cost you might as well use the first method.

Sky remotes only work with Sky boxes.
