Update: changes happen on 23 August 2010

Today, the www.pressgazette.co.uk link icon Press Gazette reports that Sky Sports News is to be removed from Freeview.

The channel will be replaced with a one hour timeshift of the Sky3 channel.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "Sky Sports News has been a great success over the last 12 years and we have big ambitions to make it even better. As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe's first HD sports news service."

Sky hopes that people will switch from Freeview to a pay service to watch the channel.

Update

Sky 3+1 is now on Freeview channel 44. If you can't see the channel (and you could see Sky Sports News before), you need to scan for channels. See below.

You can usually find SSN streamed free on the internet. I've used
Iraq Goals Sports Channels
in the past. They usually start Soccer Saturday at about 1/4 3.

ARTHUR GODFREY: BSkyB is a commercial company and does what it thinks will make the most profit.

You won't get Freeview HD without a suitable set or box. How is Sky Sports News doing since going Pay per view I just can't see people paying to watch basically a sports news channel is there a small chance it could come back to Freeview and do you think outside of the maun terrestrial broadcasters someone could launch a free to air dedicated sports channel even if its mainly highlights it be something at least dont broadcasters realise through their thick skins is people are tighting their money belts everywhere in these uncertain times I have written off on this matter and I still like to see ESPN OR Eurosport have a go on Freeview more viewers and another angle for them there are more postives than negatives

Hi Dean,

Sky sports news have gone to subscription status not pay per view & there is no chance of it returning.
ESPN is a pay service around the world & has no free services that I'm aware of.
Eurosport has converted to pay tv in every country except Germany, if you can put up with the german commentary it could give you your sports fix, All you need is a £50 satellite kit from b&q & have the dish aligned on astra 1 at 19e
I cant see any free sports channel ever starting due to having to out bid sky for the rights, if a channel picked up the rights for less popular sports the problem would be as soon as a sport became more popular sky would simply outbid them as soon as the rights came up again.

Dean Ensor: There is still a graph of the BARB figures on the Sky Sports News | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.

Seems like viewing figures have dropped by half from 1.1% to 0.6%.

Hi Dean,

The BBC just does not have the money to spend, There are many things I can think of worse than going down the pub ! anyway the pubs need the trade ! not that many pubs can afford sky any more ! unfortunatly untill people refuse to pay for sky, premium content such as sport & movies will remain out of the reach for a lot of people. Sky will only be able to charge the sort of fees that they do while the people will pay it.
