All Freeview equipment must be retuned at midday on 30 September 2009

No matter where you are, if you use Freeview from a box, have a Freeview TV or use a Freeview+ recorder you MUST retune on this day.

If you have ANY type of Freeview receiver, you will have to retune it on 30 September 2009.

To allow the introduction of Freeview HD, and to ensure that FIVE can be watched from the public service digital TV transmitters, ALL Freeview equipment must be retuned on WEDNESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2009 AT LUNCHTIME.

A simple "Add channels" scan will NOT be sufficient. This will result in channels being allocated the wrong numbers.

www.ukfree.tv link icon Click here for "generic" instructions on retuning a Freeview box, recorder or set.

www.ukfree.tv link icon Click here for a list of manuals and retuning guides for a wide range of equipment.

www.ukfree.tv link icon For more information about WHY this is being done, click here.

IF YOU NO LONGER HAVE ITV3, ITV4, FIVE, ITV2+1 or QUEST or they appear on channels numbered 800-899 then you have only "scanned for new channels". Go back and scan again using the "First time installation" option.

If you have a Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB 2000T, Portland DP100 set top box or these VCR/STBs: Daewoo SV900 or Bush IDVCR01, you need a new box.

Ray: Not all early boxes had MHEG5, which is what you need. It's not a bandwidth issue, and if it was a wideband aerial wouldn't be anything much to do with it.

Thanks for that. The stb now has been rescanned and the channel numbers are as before, unlike with the Philips iDTV. What might be the problem here? This Philips is only 2 years oldn ans was fine before the changeover. Have they radically changed the transmission parameters?

The stb is a Nokia 221T. Transmission standards are "dvb, mpeg2, ofdm", the manual says.

The iDTVis a Philips 32PF9631D/10. No transmission standards mentioned.

Do I need a new stb?

Ray: Looking at the www.ukfree.tv link icon TVs and boxes that do not support the 8k-mode | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV + switchover advice, since 2002 list, the Nokia isn't there (only the Nokia Mediamaster 9850T) and the only Philips things are the Philips DTX6370, DTX6371 and DTX6372.
www.ukfree.tv link icon 30 September Freeview Retune - list of manuals | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV + switchover advice, since 2002 has the manual for the 221T, but no specific manual for the Philips.
No, you don't need a new box.

Ok, so the only issue is the absence of teletext on the iDTV. That leaves me fuming...!
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 10:43AM
Ray: And it had it before? That is very strange.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 10:49AM
Indeed, very strange. Especially as that ancient Nokia has text. It might be that I will have to call Philips on that expensive helpline. Don't like those! Any final thoughts before I do?

PS I cannot understand why the BBC withdrew the programme skeds from the text service. They replaced them with farming stats and airport arrivals and departures, for heaven's sake. That caused a stink. I wonder if they earn a fee from the farm and sirport data... someone twisted their arm!

Ray: There is no point carrying the EPG information twice. So it is carried once in the EPG.

It's much easier to press "i" or "info" then "red, wait, some page number" to find out what the programme is.
Ray

It is not the identity of the programme I want- it is the programme schedule for the current and following day. This is no longer available to me on this receiver.

Has the absence of text left you as baffled as me? That's surprisng!

Briantist

Ray: I'm baffled if you had it before. There is no reason why the changes would have lot it for you.

There is an EPG button but it only gives the current and next programmes.

Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 1:02PM
I am referring to the iDTV and the stb. I guess the now and next info is part of the EPG? So how does one access the sked info for further ahead?
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 1:07PM
Ray: It depends on which device it is.
Ray

Neither gives me more than the now and next progs...
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 1:28PM
Ray: If you won't say what the make and model is I have no idea what you can do to get the full EPG.

Even the cheapest box I have seen in the last few years has the full EPG.

And Freeview+ recorders start at £80.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 1:35PM
Brian I have posted that info.

Hope this helps,

Just checked this out. Nothing new. It offers only now and next info. I want the whole sked for the week. This set doesn't do it. Looks like an upgrade to a DVB recorder is the best option.

Brian, this changeover has cast the cat among the pigeons as far as I am concerned. All very messy and no more text available. I will get the lowdown from Philips before deciding what to do.

I do not approve of the way the BBC unilaterally scrapped the programme pages from the text service. I hear what you say about the EPG but I do not have an EPG worthy of the name! I cannot be the only one in this pickle.
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 7:24PM
Ray: The BBC said it was a waste providing the EPG more than once, which seems fair. 99% of Freeview boxes have the full programme guide, and quite a few old ones didn't have MPEG5.

I would get a Freeview+ box, you'll never stay in to watch something again.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 7:31PM
Brian, you said earlier that 'Not all early boxes had MHEG5, which is what you need.'

That's MPEG5, I take it. Is that what I should specify when buying a hard disc recorder? I guess that is what a Freeview+ box is...? If not, what is it? Sorry I am a bit behind with all of this!
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 7:33PM
Ray: No, there is no such things as MPEG5. I wrote MHEG5 and that's what I mean.

All modern boxes support it. As long as you see the "press RED" thing on any channel, there is MHEG5.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 7:38PM
Brian, you confused me. You wrote: 'The BBC said it was a waste providing the EPG more than once, which seems fair. 99% of Freeview boxes have the full programme guide, and quite a few old ones didn't have MPEG5.' Typo? I understand, this changeover must have taxed you somewhat. I will go on eBay and look around... thanks for the advice as always. I look forward to a brave new world. The next battle for me is to stop the BBC from dumping FM radio!!
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 7:40PM
Ray: No typo there as far as I can see.

Those boxes that only had now and next also had no MHEG5 so couldn't display the "red button" text service anyway.

You have one that has now/next but no proper EPG, but does have MHEG5 so you can "press red".
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 7:47PM
Brian, you referred to MPEG5, it's in your post. Just look back. Anyway, there are only two options in the EPG - red, which is to exit the EPG, and green, which allows you to toggle between now and next. That's it, nothing else.
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 7:52PM

Ray: Sorry, I meant MHEG5. You clearly don't have a proper EPG.

Ooh, that looks nice. May I ask for a recommendation as far as hard-drive recorders are concerned? Is that the same thing as a Freeview+ box?
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 8:04PM
Ray: The above are from a machine with Windows 7 - this is the "Media Center". You can use it with FOUR DVB-T tuners which makes it the best on the market in that way, and you can use it with a 1.5TB disk no problem.

Yes, Freeview+ is the name for Freeview hard drive recorders.

All you need (when they come out) is a Windows 7 PC. When they come out on the 22nd.

Thanks, Brian. That's something I will investigate. The ultimate for couch-potatoes everywhere - except, of course, that you can go out pubbing and time-shift your faves, so you can be an 'active' couch-potato, if that is not an oxymoron.
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 8:18PM
Ray: To be honest, people with PVRs tend to watch much less TV because they watch what they want to when they want to.

You can also get a nice remote control for Windows Media Center.

Series record is great when you have enough storage for weeks and weeks.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 8:24PM
So, if I understand this, the items mentioned are computer gear which must be installed into a PC and then the PC is used to drive a normal TV receiver...
Briantist
Friday 2 October 2009 8:31PM
Ray: If you have a LCD or Plasma TV, you can use use DVI or HDMI to connect the PC to the set.

Basically Windows is the PVR software, you just need storage and receiver cards.

A big advantage to doing it that way is you can share all the recordings to every PC in the home.
Ray
Friday 2 October 2009 8:36PM
Sounds good. The PC could be placed underneath the TV set rather like VCRs etc. used to be. Still, it is more than most people would want, I think. My mother would not know what to make of it, for instance. But she is 88. If you don't want to go to these lengths, a PVR (hard disc) with maybe a couple of intergral tuners would be a big step up from what I currently have. Who does the best model? Sorry to pick your brains...
