Upgrading from Sky to Freesat

It takes less than five minutes to replace an existing satellite box with a Freesat one.

It takes less than five minutes to replace an existing satellit
Published on by on UK Free TV

If you have an existing Sky or fSfS (Freesat from Sky) installation and want to go to upgrade to Freesat, it is a simple process.

First, buy the Freesat box from a Argos, Curry.digital, Comet, John Lewes or your local independent shop:

In the box you will find the Freesat box:

Also included will be a remote control, and this model also comes with a SCART cable, a HDMI cable and a stereo-with-composite cable. Unpack the ones you need:

You old Sky box looks like this:

Unplug the mains first from the Sky box, then pull out the SCART (or SCARTs) and then unscrew the connection to the satellite dish.

Remove the Sky box and fit the Freesat box. Reconnect the satellite cable (take care as to not damage the connection) and then the SCART and finally connect the mains power:

The box will look like this:

The box also contains the manual, which has full installation instructions. Finally fit the batteries into the remote control.

The TV screen first displays the box's logo

The first set-up screen allows you to select the TV type, widescreen mode and resolution:

Next the box checks for the satellite signal:

Then there is a check for updated software:

Then you enter your postcode and the box checks it:

The next step is a scan for channels. This takes about 30 seconds:

And that's it. You can now view channels, like 108 for BBC HD:

Or press the GUIDE button for the EPG:

Many thanks for your help.
Can you suggest a suitable (low cost) Freesat HD reciever I should consider.
I will only be watching the free HD channels.
I would have converted Sky to HD but we never get to a situation where we have no stored TV on our Sky+ box so we are going to continue to watch most programmes in non HD.

John T: You can get any number of receivers from places like Argos and Comet, all will work as direct replacements for your Sky+ box.

Not all boxes support the BBC iPlayer yet, you may like to factor that into your purchase.

I am going to keep my sky plus box but have run another cable from the LNB into my summerhouse, if i purchased a Freesat HD receiver and plug it into the cable from the LNB would this work? I currently have to keep taking the sky box from the house and plug it in down the summer house to get a picture

Is it possible to record on a freesat box? Currently investigating termination of our Sky subscription because we'd like to record on to the hard drive. Is upgrading to freesat a better option that going with Sky +? What is the difference in channel access?

Many thanks

Briantist
Monday 7 June 2010 7:13AM
LAWRENCE: No, the Sky Sports channels are subscription channels, you have to enter a contract with Sky/Virgin/BT to get them.

I would like to receive as many Chinese channels as possible. Sky's free channels include CCTV-9 and PCNE. Are those channels available on ordinary freesat?
Briantist

which cable do you use from a sky+box to plug into the freesat hd tv as sky+ has two lmb cables
many thanks john
Briantist
Monday 14 June 2010 7:39AM
john: You need a link from the dish to each input, so if you want to use both Sky+ and the Freesat HD you will need three links.

Connect the Sky+ box to the TV using only a SCART cable (or HDMI cable for Sky+HD).

Wednesday 16 June 2010 5:24AM
mohamed: The box becomes a Freesat from Sky (fSfS) box. Freeview is a different service delivered by aerial with different channels.

I moved from Sky subscription to Freesat from Sky just using my old Sky box and Viewing Card. Generally, I'm quite happy and like the Sky EPG.

So, what would be the advantage, if any, of moving/upgrading to Freesat? Any extra (HD)channels?

Can I still record on my Sky+ box if I don't subscribe to Sky any more?
Briantist
Tuesday 22 June 2010 9:57AM
Diane: No, your box will revert to being a standard Sky box. If you want to record, you need to get a Freesat box. See www.ukfree.tv link icon How much is it going to cost to get High Definition TV? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice for price details.

Hello
Is it possible to view a second tv from a freest HD box by using a cable from the RF out port to a second tv with a simple coax cable? If so, which freest HD boxes would do this. Realise that picture would be SD on second tv

I have a TV with built in freeview and currently sky. I wish to cancel my subscription what, if anything will I be able to view using my sat dish ?
Briantist
Monday 28 June 2010 7:38AM
Jon: No, most boxes do not have analogue RF outputs.

However, you can just run another cable to the satellite dish and fit another Freesat box to the other TV. This will provide that set with full access to all channels.

I am currently with SKy £20 per month (no contract)using an old Panasonic digi-box circa March 2004 which has been playing up - though I have fixed that and is the oldest piece of electrical kit I have. I dont like the offers to existing sky customers but it was suggested by a local Sat company if I cancel my subscription with sky and then rejoin a few days later I would get a new box (tied to a 12 month contract). Not sure what to do as the free-view terestial is limited, Virgin Media expensive vs sky.

I want to connect my new humax fox hd box to my HD ready tv and also my standard sky box to the SAME tv. I have a 4 way lnb. Will I be able to switch between the two boxes using the relevent remotes?
Les Nicol
Thursday 8 July 2010 9:49PM
Nic - There are a range of "Freesat" receivers that could better suit your needs with ITV and BBC HD costing you nothing other than the initial receiver one off cost outlay and which would connect direct to your existing Sat dish. You state that you have no contract with Sky but pay £20 per month to them. This doesn't seem right to me did you mean £20 annual outlay for a SKY Free to view card rather than monthly subs?.
Les Nicol
Thursday 8 July 2010 10:07PM
Peter - You can connect both receivers to your LNB with two Sat.cable feeds. Your Foxsat would connect to the TV with the HDMI cable included with your receiver and your SKY receiver via the Scart ports. You may however have to use the TV remote to switch between ports rather than this being an auto function. To auto switch you would probably have to connect both receivers with scarts to the TV.

I'm looking into the pros and cons against cancelling my Sky and going with a Freesat box. The only difference i can really see is IF you can setup a series link on the recording part of the device. Can anyone tell me if one of the manufacturing box's can do this feature or is this just a sky+ function?
Thanks
Les Nicol
Sunday 11 July 2010 8:05AM
Ton- Humax Foxsat HDR You can recird either a single program or whole series. - See PVR Junction - Tech Radar reviews.
Jordy
Sunday 11 July 2010 9:29AM
Tony - As Les says mentions the Humax Foxsat HDR recorder will definitely record series of programmes.

Select the programme you wish to record in the epg by pressing "OK". A box will pop up asking to "Record single programme", "Record whole series" or "Watch"... The only slight difference that will be found is if a broadcaster doesn't offer a series link function for the particular series.

Please can someone give me some advice.
We have moved to France and have taken our sky with us - we would like to change to freeview (for obvious reasons) but because of the time difference need to be able to record programmes - can anybody please recommend what we need to get to still recieve as many channels as possible and also be able to record (the freestat doesnt work here as we dont have double cables from the dish). Many thanks

Sky will not unblock my services because they say I still owe them £23 and also want to nail me to pay by Direct Debit. They say that I am still with them until October when my 1 year contract is up. Will a freesat work if I plug it in?
David
Saturday 17 July 2010 7:43AM
Yes Phil, a freesat will work.
Briantist
Wednesday 21 July 2010 8:33AM
