Upgrading from Sky to Freesat

It takes less than five minutes to replace an existing satellite box with a Freesat one.

It takes less than five minutes to replace an existing satellit
Published on by on UK Free TV

If you have an existing Sky or fSfS (Freesat from Sky) installation and want to go to upgrade to Freesat, it is a simple process.

First, buy the Freesat box from a Argos, Curry.digital, Comet, John Lewes or your local independent shop:

In the box you will find the Freesat box:

Also included will be a remote control, and this model also comes with a SCART cable, a HDMI cable and a stereo-with-composite cable. Unpack the ones you need:

You old Sky box looks like this:

Unplug the mains first from the Sky box, then pull out the SCART (or SCARTs) and then unscrew the connection to the satellite dish.

Remove the Sky box and fit the Freesat box. Reconnect the satellite cable (take care as to not damage the connection) and then the SCART and finally connect the mains power:

The box will look like this:

The box also contains the manual, which has full installation instructions. Finally fit the batteries into the remote control.

The TV screen first displays the box's logo

The first set-up screen allows you to select the TV type, widescreen mode and resolution:

Next the box checks for the satellite signal:

Then there is a check for updated software:

Then you enter your postcode and the box checks it:

The next step is a scan for channels. This takes about 30 seconds:

And that's it. You can now view channels, like 108 for BBC HD:

Or press the GUIDE button for the EPG:

Hi, My Phillips TV has Digital audio out.
The Foxsat HD box Mutes this on all channels most of the time.

I did have Digital audio out Via BBC HD last night.
I know this is a HDCP issue but I would have thought it would have been ok on non HD channels or would at least pass through a stereo down mix all the time.

Plenty of people will be running out of appropriate digital inputs soon, or am I the only one?

Any thoughts welcome, Thanks, Chris.

D.V.Treadgold: Subtitles on digital television are not carried as part of the main picture,
but as a separate associated data. This means that if you store the programme digitally in
an integrated recorder, such as Sky+ or Freesat+ you can recall the subtitles when the
recording is replayed.
However, if you have an external digital TV recorder, the only option is to make recordings of the
picture with the subtitles on.
Whilst this is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, you may like to wait a few months and get a Freesat+ box,
as this will automatically record the subtitles regardless.

Chrislayeruk: HDMI carries audio, so there is no requirement for a separate audio connector if you use HDMI. This will be relayed to the TV's SPDIF optical out, but you might have issues with the Dolby Digtal, and might have to switch to "stereo" if you don't have a 5.1 speaker setup and amplifier with Dolby functions.

Hi Briantist,thx for the reply;

I get HDMI audio out from my Panasonic PVR via the COAC Digital out. (HDMI 1)

The Freesat box is the problem.
The audio gets to the TV as I have TV Speaker sound should I want it.
Having a Meridian surround system, I dont want TV speaker sound.

I somtimes get sound for a few seconds on (HDMI 2), then it mutes.

I believe this is due to HDCP (IMHO, over aggressive) copy protection.
I have tried "DD 5.1 Off" in the Humax set up with no result.

Any more idea's out there please?

I have put an Email into Humax and if I get a result, I will post it as it may help others.
Thanks again, Chris

chrislayeruk: Can't you take the audio directly from the Freesat box?

Brianist, Thats what I am doing, but a new TV is on the Horizon and it will only have Optical out, so now I am running low on inputs.
I dont want to use an Optical to Coax converter unless I really have to.

These companies all make great kit, but dont seem to consider (in the interest of cost cutting) that we (the Paying public) have between us the problem of an infinate number of connection options.
Please Please Please AV manufacturers, for the love of humanity, (I know, I am going over the top here), put 2 Digital outputs, one of each, on your devices. (You will sell more)
Thanks again, Chris

Hi Brian --

I currently subscribe to Sky and have a Sky+ box. I'd like to cancel my Sky subscription and receive the freeview channels. If I understand correctly, I should be able to receive some, but not many, freeview channels with my current Sky box, but would need to upgrade by buying a FreeSat box if I want to receive the full freetv listing. Is that correct? Also, if my lcd tv has a built-in freeview tuner, would that mean I do not need the FreeSat box?

Thanks!

Slee: Unless you want the HD channels there is little to be gained switching receivers, at least until the Freesat+ boxes come out very soon. Freeview TVs can only receive Freeview, not satellite signals.

Hi,

I'd like to be able to watch Italian channels. I'd like to be able to still see the main UK channels but I don't know which equipment to buy or what to join (spending a reasonable amount). Can you please suggest what my options are.
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

I am in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Can i get Freesat here?

So i have a Sky+ box still connected to my sat dish.

Any ideas??
Briantist

John: Yes, there are no problems with Freesat in the Channels Islands.

Hi. Can I get Freesat in france, in paricular southern Britatany, south of Rennes? I really only want Radio 4 which we used to get on Long wave, but now interference is so bad we cannot get it. I assume Freesat broadcasts all the BBC radio stations?

Steve/Briantist. Good to know more integrated TVs with freesat are comming.

Can a non or lapsed suscription sky+ box be used or converted - adapted or modified to operate on freesat+ ?
George
Briantist

george: No, whilst the hardware of a Sky+ box belongs to the customer, the authorisation to use it remains with Sky.

Hi Mark
You seem to be the resident expert on here and I have a query for you that you may be able to help me with. I can get BBC Radio nan Gaidheal (Gaelic Radio) on my Sky box but when I fit a Sky+ Box, I get the channel info but no sound. I tried a few Sky+ Boxes. Same problem. Re-connected my standard Sky box and full audio. I have replaced the Scart lead, but makes no difference.
Signal Strength is around 85% and quality is similar. All other radio stations are fine on both boxes and all TV stations are OK as well.
Any ideas? Many thanks

Hi John, if all other channels have sound, it must be a reception issue, to check this you need to check a tv station that is transmitted on the same transponder, you should be able to find which ones on lyngsat.com , it might be that the tuners in the sky+ are not as good as the one in your sky box, if you are not in the uk this can be a issue. Briantist

John: BBC Radio nan Gaidheal is on Astra 2A on the same transponder as BBC News 24.

can i record on freesat if i kept my sky+ box?

Briantist

i have a sky+ box, i want to stop subscibing to sky,i've heard you can pay a one off payment of £20 or so to sky and receive a new card which gives you more channels than normal freeview, if this is so, would i still be able to record wih my sky+
Briantist
Thursday 2 October 2008 12:24PM
trina a: No, you won't be able to record, and there is no point paying £20 for the card, as it works in an identical way to your expired subscription card. You can keep paying Sky £10 per month if you want Sky+ to work with the free services.

Advice appreciated-
I have recently linked my Humax Freesat reciever and my Onkyo 606 AV Amp to 5.1 speakers. HDMI cables used between Humax/AV Amp/TV.Hoping to listen to full digital 5.1 sound (HD transmissions)
When listening to FreeSat BBC HD there is no sound coming from my front-centre speaker. Voice sound is from L and R speakers?
All speakers perform great when my Blue ray is playing.
What is going wrong?
TIA to remedy my 'loss of sound'
Briantist
Monday 6 October 2008 5:46AM
Ade R: You will only get sound from the centre dialogue speaker when watching BBC HD when a 5.1 transmission is being broadcasts. The rest of the time no sound should come from it.

We have a sky dish and an existing Sky Air to View box. Because of our house construction we can not have a conventional aerial. The sky dish has 4 points. We want to add an additional air to view box to watch tv in another room. Can we use a FreeSat box as well as a sky box from the same dish?
Briantist
Saturday 18 October 2008 3:19PM
helen sigward: Yes, you can connect Freesat boxes to the same connections as Sky boxes. You need an individual connection from the dish to each box.

If I get a tv with built in freesat can I view the freesat content using my existing sky dish and still use the sky+ box as well. If so do I have to have another cable connected to my LNB in order to watch them both independently

Saturday 1 November 2008 5:15PM
Dave - You can run A Freesat HD box from your current dish. You will need another cable run from the quad LNB on the dish for the Freesat HD box and this would have to be a twin core cable if opting for the Freesat + HDR box. There is no dish alignment required.
Briantist
Saturday 1 November 2008 5:18PM

Saturday 1 November 2008 5:21PM
Dave - P.S. If you decided to "Kick your Sky + Box into touch" and opt for a new Freesat + HDR box you would manage on your current dish setup.
