Is there a big problem with the Freeview HD plan?

Will you actually be able to receive the proposed 256QAM mode HD transmissions?

Will you actually be able to receive the proposed 256QAM mode H

Ofcom and the BBC have www.ofcom.org.uk link icon proposed (or possibly www.ofcom.org.uk link icon decided) to launch a three/four HDTV service using multiplex B, starting in late 2009 using the (unratified) DVB-T2 standard. (see www.ukfree.tv link icon The "secret" Ofcom plan for Freeview HDTV: DVB-T2 - ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002)

This proposal is to use the 256QAM broadcast mode.

www.ofcom.org.uk link icon Ofcom's predictions for coverage of multiplex B at switchover seem to be based on using 64QAM mode, however.

We need to know if the BBC will increase the power levels of multiplex B to match the coverage of the other six (or three where appropriate) multiplexes, or will the coverage of multiplex B (in the HD mode) therefore be less than it would be if left in 64QAM mode?

The BBC did a good piece of research back in 2002, to test the differences between the Freeview modes. www.bbc.co.uk link icon BBC - R&D - Publications - WHP056

However, no such tests have been done to compare the effect of 256QAM mode to 64QAM, so it seems possible that the proposed Freeview HD service will actually restrict the services received by many licence fee payers.

Being a "mere female", I find the freesat hd a bit complicated to understand. At present I subscribe to Sky. I have a new full HD-ready tv incorporating Freeview. I also have a Sky+ box.

Can someone please tell me what, if anything else I might need to watch freesat HD tv?

Also, if I don't need anything else, how will I tune into the freesat service.

Sorry if these questions sound a bit stupid, but any help would be most welcome.

kalbarrie: Please see www.ukfree.tv link icon All about Freesat | ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002 - basically you need a HD satellie receiver and an HDMI cable. Sky+ is not HD. Freeview is not HD.

I gather that HD on Freeview will coincide with the Granada switchover in late Autumn.Does this mean that here in the South west (Huntshaw Cross) we will also begin to have HD? Our DSO is July 09.

Paul: Multiplex B will switch to the DVB-T2 HD service at the Granada switchover date. The dates are listed here - www.ukfree.tv link icon Huntshaw Cross digital switchover date | ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002

Thank you very much. Your web site is a mine of information. Another excellent site is Digital Radio Information - DAB/DAB+, Internet radio and radio via digital TV covering audio issues.

Will squeezing HD sevices onto Freeview mean that the already low quality compression (in my view) for SD freeview gets reduced even further. I'm not too happy with digital picture quality as it is, but at least the BBC channels are passable at present (when showing recorded content - live stuff is always bad).

peter peart: Things have chanced since the article was published on 19th April 2008, Freeview HD capacity is on it's own multiplex, it does not share with BBC SD services.
