From next monday, the BBC News channels will become 'BBC News'
Yes folks, as you read here on 12th Jun 2006, BBC News 24 is to have a new name.

So, from next Monday, UK viewers will have BBC News and non UK viewers will have the BBC World News.

The new look, with new graphics and titles will also be installed for the BBC regional news programmes. This will match the look already seen on BBC NEWS - News Front Page

It may come as a shock to many, as the UK channel is refered to by most as simply 'News 24', the name it has had since its brightly coloured launch on Sunday 9th November 1997.

The international channel has changed names a few times, starting out (on Thursday 26th January 1995) as the incomprehensibly long BBC World Service Television, before being 'BBC World'. The channel is now almost all news, so the name BBC World News seems quite sensible.

There are quite a few other News channels around the world that have taken the '24' moniker, including in France and Italy.

The new look will reintroduce the animated placenames that were a feature of the titles from Monday 25th October 1999 until Monday 8th December 2003.

Half a million pounds well spent? What do you think?

Personally I think I prefer BBC News 24 (and I'm sure I'll not be the only one who continues to refer to it as News 24). I understand why the BBC want to unify their news brands, but to be honest I think that News 24 is a brand that deserves to stand up on its own right.

From the financial point of view I think we could all come up with better ways for the BBC to spend this kind of money (a version of the iPlayer that works properly on the PS3, or perhaps a recruiting bonus for a serious candidate as the new director of FM&T) but in relative terms this is probably not an outrageous amount of money to be 'lost' this way.

So perhaps there's another reason for this change - is Fox trying to copyright '24'? Previously on News 24... :)

Maybe I'm just a little cynical about corporate re-branding exercises, which seem to be trailed forever and when they finally happen you're left wondering what all the fuss was about and if anyone actually noticed the change. (map)

Robert Holness: I can't understand it, News 24 has wiped the floor with Sky News for the last two years, and now the channel is to be denuded of its digits. And yes, I wanted to apply for that job, I have just written an official complaint to the BBC because they did not advertise the position.

I'll still call it 'News 24'.
I agree with the above.....they would be better off fixing it so that everyone can use iplayer than messing about with this silly name change.
I'll still call it 'News 24'....as I'm sure most people will.
It reminds me of when Sir Paul had a hissy fit a few years back and wanted some of the writing credits to read 'McCartney/Lennon', and everybody in the world thought 'hey, Paulie, we'll still refer to them as 'Lennon/McCartney' songs whatever it says on the CD.
Next week, BBC1 changes it's name to BBCA.... (map)

Mark: 'News 24' does exactly what it says on the tin.

Yes, Mark, and I still listen to the 'Home Service' in my car. And make calls using my Cellnet mobile phone. And eat Marathon bars. ;-)

Rebranding is a fact of life; sometimes it's justified, sometimes it's not, however there's rarely any point in persisting in using the old name for any length of time. Ultimately it just means other people won't know what you're talking about. (map)

towny: Interesting enough you actually refer to these. There is a difference, of course, it is work rebranding when a product has changed (the Home Service was not Radio 4), Cellnet was a joint BT/Securicor venture, O2 was not; Marathon was a worldwide change of name. There is no logic to News 24 having a new name.

Lambie Nairn got an awards for their boxes, didn't they.. only two decades ago. They've chopped the strip down to a box, but you can make an awful lot of money from a single idea, can't you?

These 'new' titles seem very similar to some classics, TVARK | British Satellite Broadcasting

First look at the new look.

So, what do you think of the new look?

I'll return a little later to see if someone in the gallery can find the 'scroller' and 'clock' buttons on their panel...

IMHO, it seems a bit 'cramped' because the background is a fake... look like any number of cheap foreign news channels now. shame...

Nick in France again. With BBC/ITV having their own Freesat system will their channels no longer appear on the traditional Sky digi-box?

Nick Lynn: No. The channels are free-to-air and the BBC and ITV have paid Sky to have them listed in the Sky EPG. There's no new transmissions, Freesat simply promotes the services that are already there, but without the need to pay Sky.
