Today, 30th October 2007, marks the fifth anniversary of Freeview.

There have been many changes since then, BBC CHOICE has become BBC THREE, BBC KNOWLEDGE had just become BBC FOUR, all the BBC digital radio services have joined.

ITV has started ITV-3, ITV-4 and CITV; Channel 4 brought satellite subscription channels E4 and Film4 - then they added on More4.

Sky Travel became Sky Three; the ITV News Channel has closed, as has FTN and ABC-1.

Congratulations to Freeview - and to Greg Dyke for having the foresight to launch the service.

freeview has been a sucess and freesat should also be a success many tv providers see the value in a free to air service

terry gunnell: I suspect you are right. Also, many people will start dumping their Sky subscription and get a Freesat Playback box.

I hope they keep adding channels, UK Gold one, Living, Sci-fi, Eurosport, Hallmark would be good additions to put on eventaully I agree with the comment that many providers value free to air which is why Freeview must stay free

Dean Ensor: The only additional channel space is a daytime slot vacated by ABC1.

it maybe 5 years old but why do we have to put up with yet more shopping channels . having just rescaned my set top box i could not believe that there was a new channel called gems tv. with $ky threatening to put ppv on the freeview platform know we have to endure yet another new channel that is taking up space where a decent channel could be broadcasting . come on powers that be give us quality programming not more trash . leave these channels to $ky and cable , give freeview a better choice of channels that the majority can enjoy . also keep freeview free .

ravenslament: The shopping channels bought their Freeview slots in a open bidding process. Unless they are put up for sale, there is no reason for them to leave Freeview.

Just to be picky about the changes since Freeview launched on 30 October 2002:

BBC Four was already called that. BBC Knowledge relaunched as BBC Four in February or March 2002.

Sky Travel has not become Sky Three. Sky Travel ceased to be on Freeview (it's still on Sky Digital), Sky Three took the place of Sky Travel on Freeview when launched.

UKTV Bright Ideas, Ftn and abc1 didn't exist the day Freeview launched.

Nicholas Willmott: You are right about BBC FOUR, god knows where that came from. UKTV Bright Ideas (15 January 2003), FTN launched shortly after Freeview (also 15 January 2003), ABC1 was added on 27 September 2004, I didn't say otherwise.
