Published on by on UK Free TV
Sky subscribers and Freesat card holders will be able to view Channel 4 programmes in HD from December, Broadcast reports toady.

A wide range of programmes will be simulcast on channel 140, and will be the first permanent HD channel from a public service broadcaster.

C4's told Broadcast: "The launch represents ... an important ... service ... to the rapidly increasing number of HD viewers. [It will ] boost HD production for the benefit of producers of Channel 4 programmes ... [making them] more saleable in the international market."

Sky currently offers a dozen HDTV channels.

The Channel 4 HD channel will join the BBC's HD trial and be several months ahead of a limited ITV HD prime-time service.

Paul Nicholes: You will need a V+ box and to be in an cable area that support it, plus you will require an appropriate subscription - then C4 need to start their service.

V+ is currently on offer for £75.Should we buy into cable HD now or hang fire and see Planet earth in true form in our next holiday. There is BBC HD and limited on demand content.

To anyone this may seem a good offer but you will need to remain at present as an XL customer to avoid the current charges ie if you are an medium free tv customer you will need to pay to have this box sit as shining ad on to your HD 1080p tv if you have one.

allan: The HDTV isn't "p", it is the input signal. As always the price of such a box will probably fall over time, if you want HD now, buy one. If you can wait, you will get something better, cheaper next year.

I have a Fortec HD receiver with which I watch BBC HD, do we know when Channel 4 will appear there or is it only restricted to Sky satellite services?

Hi Kyle, as far as i know the channel hd service will require a freesat card & sky receiver for a while but this will change when their contract for encryption expires next year. Mark Aberfan Aerials
