Time to swap Freeview channels?

Some Freeview channels are flagging... is it time for a rethink?

Some Freeview channels are flagging... is it time for a rethin
Published on by on UK Free TV

There is no doubting the success of Freeview. Since it launched at the end of October 2002, Freeview has become the most popular digital TV platform in the UK.

Some of the channels that have had joined Freeview have done very well too, but others have not.

The UKTV Bright Ideas channel has never scored more than 0.2% since it launched!

Perhaps it is time to replace this channel with the once popular UKTV Gold?

Which channels would you pull from Freeview? Which channels would you replace them with?

John Threadwell: There is, sadly, no capacity for additional channels until switchover is complete.

Ditch all the shopping channels and give the saved bandwith to a couple of high definition channels

I know what should happen. The BBC should sell its digital time slots to another broadcaster (thus getting rid of BBC FOUR, BBC Three Parliament etc) giving the BBC more money to concentrate on its core services (BBC 1 BBC 2) sell the space to another braocaster who amy be able to make better use of the time available THE END.

John Threadwell: It cannot, they are gifted by Parliament for non-commercial use. Also, BBC Parliament is funded directly by the goverment. I think you will find that the Royal Charter requires the provision of BBC THREE and BBC FOUR.

Woah! I like Parliament channel. I don't want that to go, and BBC4 often has some interesting programmes on, so that I'd like kept as well. However, all those shopping channels and game channels are just a waste of space really. Scrapping a few of those to make way for a few decent channels would be okay by me. I used to watch TCM, now that would be good on Freeview. Well any other free-to-air film/movie channels would be a good addition to the service. However, I have to say that I'd rather Sky were kept away from Freeview, no matter what they offered.

Nigel: At that location, you are predicted to have variable to poor reception from Sutton Coldfield on all multiplexes. It is likely to stop working at least some of the time, with very little you can do about it. It's simply down to the variability of signal propogation from the transmitter to you, and of signals from other transmitters as well. A bit lower propogation from Sutton Coldfield to you, and a little more from others, and it could well reduce signal quality enough for some services to stop working. This variability - which broadcasters call 'fading' - is usually different on different frequencies, so some services may be failing while others are working, then swapping around at different dates.

It is predicted that you have a high likelihood of reliable service from Sutton Coldfield once it has switched over. You will need to retune on the 7th and 21st of September.

Carlos : The capacity on Freeview is sold as open auctions, this means that no one can bar channels that can pay to be on the platform.

Bring back Eurosport, as there seems no way to get this on freeview. It used to be available as part of a Top-up, I believe?
