Published on by Brian Butterworth on UK Free TV If you do need a new aerial, you may wish to employ a professional to install one for you. Most people don't have the head for heights combined with roof-walking skills.
A good installer will provide you with a written quotation for the work beforehand, and not require payment until the work is complete. Good companies provide identity cards to staff that work in customer's homes.
It's often best to ask friends and neighbours for recommendations too. They may know, for example, if you need a high-cost class I aerial or if there is a more economic solution.
The aerial should be installed in a place that is good for reception and complements the building. Ideally, it should not be visible from the street. If this is impossible, it should not distract from the building. If you live in a listed building or conservation area you may have other restrictions.
Any existing aerials should be disconnected. If the building has multiple aerials any new aerial should be around one metre away from any existing aerials. If the signal is poor, it may be more economic to have a single high-quality aerial and a mast-head amplifier, rather than several poorer aerials.
Mounting many aerials on the same pole will degrade the signal received by each, unless they have about one metre spacing.
The cable that connects to the aerial can be a variety of colours; the one chosen should be complementary. It must be secured at regular intervals and travel either vertically or horizontally. When it enters the house from the outside, this should be done directly though a hole drilled right though the brickwork, and then sealed. A hole though a wooden window-frame is OK but one though double-glazing is not.
The cable inside should be tidy and run horizontally or vertically too, and be securely and regularly fixed. The cable should end in a wall-mounted socket within a few metres of the television set.
From this socket another fly-lead connects to the TV or set-top box. In the event of a thunderstorm, the equipment can be protected from random lightning damage by the disconnection of this "fly-lead" cable.
You should expect a installation for Freeview reception to give the full range of channels with uninterrupted video and sound on all channels once connected.
ABC Aerials have a Installers from Hell section, where you can see great examples they have found of bad installers. You have been warned!
thanks for the link brian however the link to my site is not working its the wrong adress.

i take my hat off to you my dear fellow it realy must be quite a task to keep this excellent website of yours as up to date as what it is wall done chap i think you are dooing an excellent job in pointing people in the right direction 10/10
as a technicianb with a company installing a tv aerial write a comprehensive report to a customer reguaring aerial instillation at his home
write the report on the bases of what you fill it will involve including some imaginary cost transportation and time taking. costed at some price
Partly it is down to the transmission mode of these channel, see Freeview modes and also might be down to the lower strength of these signals or aerial group, but I don't know where Kelson is!
a quick note we are a company based in bolton and cover the north west of england including manchester. It looks like you are planning to list installers any chance of looking at what we can offer and posting us on your site and i can post a link back from our site also.
Complete tv aerial and satellite installations including sky freesat at the same price as sky,for all those people who are in bad tv aerial reception.
regards
andy
I'll see what I can do, as this would be a sensible service to provide. I can probably do it by postcode of the company office and the distance (in miles or km) that you service from the office. I'll sort out some cut-and-paste text for the link back too.
website is www.digital-tv-solutions.net based in westhoughton bolton currently cover the north west region preston bolton chorley wigan etc also sister company covering the manchester area
hope to hear from you again soon

The down side of having free view boxes in all the rooms sounds like they may be tampered with or stolen.Would it be possible and a cheaper and more practical alternative to have free view built in to the tv.
We will be having a full refurb and should be ready to open with 3 months.
Ed: Sorry, I thought I'd replied. You should get a good enough signal from either Crystal Palace or Bluebell Hill. If you want to be on the safe side, use a 100-element rooftop widebandaerial (perhaps with a masthead amplifier) and use a high-quality boosting distributer.
I will shortly be replacing my aerial and as per the guides on this site my transmitter is 47KM away at compass bearing 157°. I know magnetic and true north aren't the same so do i need to compensate for that over this distance? or is it a case of pointing it roughly there then moving it to see where is best (i know the pros have a meter to plug in), I'll see if my freeveiw box has a strength meter as Ive seen that on satellite receivers before.
Andy: The bearings are for 'grid north' on the National Grid, consult an OS map for the current deviation between magnetic north and grid north. Freeview box signal strength meters are uncalibrated, but you should always go for 'what works'!
We are considering a new arial and having it put on the adjoining chimney to our neibours can we run the tention wire around our neibours roof and their side of the chimney without any come back on us
westley: You should really ask them, if not for permission, but to ensure that they do not accidentally remove it. But you have no right to impinge on their property.
Hi Westley, this link might be of interest, Press Information - The Confederation of Aerial Industries Limited I agree with brian that it would be a wise & decent thing to do to advise your neighbour of your intentions & maybe ask to see if they need to have some work done at the same time reducing the cost to both of you. Many Thanks

Hi, wondering if you can help me. I have been using Freeview through my digital tv with no problems (got all the channels and no breakup of picture etc..)
I recently bought a digital receiverbox so I can record + pause tv and so I could get ESPN. When I connect the aerial to the box the picture breaks every 10 seconds or so. Any idea why this might be even though there was no problem through the my tvs built in receiver?

Hi, Just my observations on what I have seen in my area lately. I live about 4 miles from the Sutton Coldfieldtransmitter & I have seen very expensive 'digital aerials' being installed on roofs & then being pointed at the Lichfield C5 transmitter which is a few degrees to the right of SC transmitter from where I live. I am wondering if these people will need to call the installers back in about 12 months to realign the aerial.
Regarding aerial costs, I bought a new 'log periodic' aerial for £20 & installed it myself in the loft - perfect digital reception!
Wayne: Yes, when the full power digital services start, as has happened in other regions, many people will need to remove all the amplifiers and boosters from their systems to get Freeview to work.
And, as with people pointing their aerials at Lichfield, yes, some people will probably need to have them aligned correctly.
I had an aerial fitted by Northwest Aerial & Cable Com and they drilled through the double glazed window frame! The unit is now damaged and has moisture spots in the lower corners as well as letting in rain and an almighty draught where the cable enters. I complained to the company - turns out it was the boss that did it! He told me it is up to the individual fitter as to where they drill and has refused to replace the frame and do the job properly. One of his lads whilst checking the aerial said he would'nt have done that, he'd have come through the wall above the skirting, he's a perfectionist and likes everything neat and tidy! Surely the boss should be the perfectionist and lead by example not the other way round!! They're supposed to be a reputable firm, 100% customer satisfaction guaranteed - maybe, if you don't get the boss! What do you think? I intend reporting him to trading standards and the local newspaper and would really appreciate any additional advice or comments.
Kelly - Have a chat with Citizens Advice Bureau..they will advise you on your rights.
The job should have been done to reasonable standards without incidental damage, but any reputable firm will always carry third-party insurance for the occasional time when things go wrong, even accidently.
CAB may advise you that you can sue the firm in the Small Claims Court for the cost of a replacement frame (a simple and easy procedure which you can do yourself), but I'd ask them first.
just installed new high gain aerial on the chimney, Harriseahead S.O.T, Digital reception is average at best !!!! is there a compass reading i should know about, to point aerial at ?? I believe Sutton Coldfied transmitter is now on line now ..maybe you can help.

I have just bought a new LED 1070 digital sharp tv which I want to install for the kitchen. I have 2 tvs in other rooms each with their own separate digital aerial in the loft. 1. Can I run a coax and link the new tv from one of the existing aerials ?
2. Can this coax feed directly into the TV or should i install a aerial termination point ?

Re My previous note.
I want to fix my new Sharp TV wall mount but I notice that the aerial and power connections protrud 2-3 cms directly out of the back of the tv. Even with a wall mount plate this does not give sufficient clearance. How do people do this when faced with this configuration ?
Dave Lindsay Saturday 19 November 2011 11:08AM Doncaster
Richard: You can get mains leads with right-angled connectors on the end. You can also get right-angled aerial connectors. Would this have sufficient clearance?
Superb site Brian, just a quick ? I live at SW4 6JB and have my aeriel pointed at Crystal palace all should be well but channels 50-54 all the good stuff have become unavailable since the switchover, I have discovered that the signal strength was multiplied tenfold and i have an inline splitter amp. I have switched this off and at one point managed to retune the elusiver channels in, but impossible to watch. Aeriel first then start attenuating or am I missing something basic on the tuning front. many thansk in advance>
